5 Tips on How to Fully Enjoy Saké Rice Wine (Before You Regret It)

  • What you’re looking forward to the most when you visit Japan is the food right? And to fully enjoy a great meal, you need to have the best drinks too. Japanese beers are of course amazing, but I know you’d want to try drinking Japanese saké.
    But if you actually go to an Izakaya or a traditional restaurant, you will be shocked. There are too many kinds, they all have difficult names, and the staff will even ask you if you’d like it hot or cold. I think most people will just randomly choose the one the staff recommended, and end their saké experience. Nooo! You’re missing out on a great adventure of Japanese drinks!
    So today, I will talk about the 5 things I want you to know to fully enjoy your experience of drinking saké. The 5 things will get more and more interesting toward the end, so I hope you can enjoy this video till the end.       try it in cocktails. in Brazil they are popular. Sake, ice and Strawberries are the most one.

    English tip: "Sorbet" is the French-root variant of the word for a frozen juice dessert - so the second syllable is pronounced "bay" instead of "bet." 🍨🥰

    I’m an active sake drinker myself and always thought that the safest way to introduce someone to sake was at room temperature but this has opened my eyes to some points I didn’t know. Shogo-sensei this guide is priceless

    I've only had sake once. It was at a sushi restaurant in Omaha. I got a Junmai-Ginjo and it was served to me a bit under room temperature in a small ceramic ochoko. One of the best things I've ever had. They gave me the bottle to enjoy at home too. Definitely want to try more but it's hard to find here.

    I had no idea that there are so many different kinds. Here in the Netherlands, you usually get a glass of sake, with no explanation and what it is or how to drink it. Never heard of different temperatures. I do not like sake, but after seeing this video, I will definitely try it again

      I had it at a sushi spot and mind was served warm and it was delicious! The flavor was more potent warm and evenbthe sweetness was more pronounced.

    I love Sake, and have always enjoyed it warm to hot. The fragrance is incredible, and in my opinion, the drinking is smoother because it is slower due to the warmth. I enjoy it out of Tokkuri and Ochoko because to me, it feels ceremonious, but in a relaxed way. I've been wanting to get my own set of Tokkuri and Ochoko so that I can I partake at home and enjoy the beauty of drinking it this way, an hopefully share the experience with friends. I do so hope that I may visit Japan someday as it has always been a dream of mine to do so.

    I've been on a binge of trying different alcoholic beverages. I like sake more than wine, beer, etc. It's very smooth, that's the only word I can use to describe it. I actually enjoyed it compared to other alcoholic beverages

    I got my first matcha tea set and tea today. It will definitely take some practice to get the hang of whisking it properly but it was delicious! Next on the list of beverages is a Tokkuri and Ochoko set and some sake! Thank you for all the information, your channels are a gold mine for all things Japanese culture!

    I prefer drinking it cold as the warm or hot sake goes right to me as I get a quick buzz and hot. Surprised you did not include on how different temps can hit a person and effect their enjoyment.

    Hana Fuji apple sake was an accident but I wanted to make drunken apple pie for Thanksgiving but I had run out of my usual alcohol and only had Hana Fuji apple sake I was a little Leary about it but it became a family favorite!!! Made it with Fuji apples and apple pears

    so mead is a wine made from honey, but if we add fruit its not technically a mead anymore its a melomel. i bring this up cause there is this one "sake" called gekkeikan plum, so i dont know if thats still a sake.
    bottle says to chill it but i like it warm. really tasty.

    I love sake, but I'm not fussy about it. Mostly, I drink the cheap stuff-the basic grade of Gekkeikan, Sho Chiku Bai, Ozeki, or Yaegaki-at room temperature, mostly because I'm far too lazy to warm it up or chill it. Also, these are what I buy for cooking, so that's what's always in my house or shopping basket. I'll happily drink the more expensive stuff, too, but only on special occasions. I also like nigorizake, which also makes a nice cocktail mixed 50/50 with umeshu. Oh, and I really like the tiny Cap Ace bottles from Gekkeikan, with the cute little plastic cup on top. I save the cups to use later for picnics and camping. The cup I use most often at home is the 1 gō stainless steel rice cooker cup from Daiso (w). I tend to make only a 120 mL serving of rice for myself, so the Daiso cup never gets used for cooking, anymore. I also use the tiny glass jars from individual serving size Choya umeshu.

    My favourite is probabaly the Ozeki ginjyoshu chilled and on its own. Not too fond of heated sake, but can appreciate the scent.
    I have GOT to try making that frozen sake though!! And vary the cup material... Very nice video, thank you for the insight!

    Adding water to saké is an interesting one! There's something similar in Ireland were we add a dash of water to whiskey to bring out more of the flavor!

    i have found that i enjoy the more traditional type of sake (kimoto/bodaimoto and with their own yeast or no yeast added) and with rice that is less polished ( ginjo sake is a relatively recent innovation) they have a bit of a fuller taste and body with some character

    I've had sake served to me in several restaurants directly in a masu, no glass.
    Also, a "purple haze" is a nice sake mixed drink.

      That's surprising, because there's a fairly large Japanese community in KY. There are about 200 Japanese-owned companies operating in KY.

    There are so many yummy rice wine 😋I tend to like sweet sake. In my culture, after women give birth, and then they drink homemade rice wine. Usually the mother or elders make few months before the birth. Thank you Shogo, I recently went to Kyoto and I many of your recommended restaurant, and they were delicious. I have to go to wedding in Asia so I will go back to Kyoto again this year 😊 I hope you do more food recommendation videos 😁 Can you do a pottery class in Kyoto review :)

    The thing that always seems to get me is the cloudiness. I like the richer flavor that the style provides, but I always seem to confuse it with the quality grading system. Any chance you might expand on the filtration aspect in a future video?

    I was in Kyoto two weeks ago and I want some sake, ask the staff some sake (totally forgetting that sake in Japanese is all kind of alcoholic beverages) and he looks to me confused and point like “all those in the menu 😂😂😂, my mind could remember nihonshu 日本酒 , I felt very embarrassed and order beer instead.

    Have you heard about Oragami Sake from Arkansas? Best Sake in the USA. They've got a filtered Sake where 90% of the rice is polished and a Nigori that is delicious

    What about dry/sweetness levels? I notice the negative number are sweeter. Like Sho Chiku Bai Nigori is a -20 sweetness. Not too sweet and not too dry. Also I would like to know more about unfiltered Sake. Great video though.

    One of my favorite memories of visiting Japan in the fall, was nursing bottles of hot saki in the small bars at night . We were so poor, that was all we could afford but it was a fun experience. .

    Mr. Shogo, what do you mean by "brewing alcohol?" I've brewed beer for a long time and even dabbled with ciders and meads but I am unfamiliar with this term, other than meaning the alcohol produced when fermenting a brewed beverage naturally with the alcohol and all the other impurities produced during the natural process of the yeast eating the sugar (impurities such as methanol and other congeners) left in the final drink without distilling. Am I correct in thinking this "brewing alcohol" is just distilled alcohol from rice and/or another grain that is then added to the naturally fermented sake to increase it's alcohol content? Thank you for the great content and keep up the hard work. 🙂

      brewing alchohol is basically just neutral spirit that breweries use to adjust the product. A little bit added at the end of fermentation lifts the taste of the sake and releases some flavours

The best I've come across is a Ginjo type premium sake. Japanese imports are a rare treat for me in local stores though.
    I ask because, I too train in Kobudo. In our dojo we train at night on the weekdays and every one in a while we have a special Saturday training session in the morning for advanced students to learn techniques at a higher level and prepare us how to teach others. After these classes me and my buyu (warrior brothers) go to an anime themed Ramen restaurant with delicious traditionally made ramen whose owner is a Japanese immigrant from Tokyo who chills with me and my bros once in a while. Then we proceed to browse stores for various types of sake and take it back to our hang out home and spend the night watching anime playing games and drinking sake.
    I'd love to surprise them with a special imported sake from Japan one of these days. I always have an incredible time with them and they are the best bros a guy could ask for, but I struggle to find anything truly impressive.

    I've wanted to get more into Sake for several years now. I think that I will take the plunge. I'm a beer geek. And the rules regarding temperature and flavor apply with beer as well. A pilsner for example, should be served cold. For its cool crisp flavor. Whilst porter should be served lukewarm. To get the most out of its more complex coffee, chocolate notes. Cheers!🍶

    'Rice wine' is a misnomer for sake; there are rice wines in other oriental cultures fermented only with yeast, but sake brewing has an extra step - the introduction of a mold component (koji) after yeast-induced fermentation. We enjoy our sake warmed up in the cooler months from small ceramic cups, and cooler in the warmer months in cedar-box cups. Especially in the warmer months, we enjoy unfiltered sake, which has a milky appearance and has a slightly sweet flavor. We have several Japanese stores locally that do stock several different varieties; regional beer & spirit shops have the more common varieties of sake (analogous to table wines). I do brew my own beer & mead; sake brewing is on my bucket list.

      @@madtabby66 I look at it more like the differences between bourbons and other whiskeys/whiskies. Viewed from the brewer's perspective, these is a difference - sake requires a unique extra processing step; otherwise, you would just have ordinary rice wine. With making wine from grapes, everyone uses the same basic procedure.

      At the beginning he says "mina-san, konichiwa."
      みなさん - Everybody, or all of you
      こんにちは - lit "today is." Used as a formal greeting in the day time.
      At the end he says "mina-san, domo arigatō gozaimashita."
      皆さん / みなさん - Everybody, or all of you
      どうもありがとうございます - Thank you very much
      For reference, when closing a video it's expected to say "arigatō gozaimashita" instead of "arigatō gozaimasu."
      You would use "gozaimasu" upon initially receiving some form of kindness or generosity. But in a closing response, such as returning a borrowed manga or finalizing a situation, you would used "arigatō gozaimashita."

    Huh, never heard of putting it over vanilla ice cream... I'm generally more of a root beer float kinda gal, but I guess I gotta try it at least once! XD What ya think, suppose it couldn't hurt to mix it all into a boozy sake milkshake? Oooh maybe I'll use that kinda ice cream that is vanilla mixed with orange sherbet so it has some orange flavor too!

    I never liked alcohol, I don't like wine, I can't stand beer (Japanese or otherwise). But somehow I find sake to be delightful, no matter which variety. It's too bad that it's rarely available in bars and restaurants in the west.

    If I tried all of these variations in one sitting, I might be very intoxicated. I might say "Sake to me" but that might not mean anything to you.     I ordered sake recently for the very first time. The restaurant I was eating at did not have any options and I don't remember if they even listed the brand. When they asked for what temperature I said hot and I regretted it. Even pouring the bottle hurt my fingers and drinking it wasn't any better. I know nothing about sake, was that too hot or is it supposed to be like that?

      That's probably the way to drink sake, "飛び切り燗 Tobikiri-kan", where the sake temperature is 55°C or higher.
      The aroma of the sake becomes stronger and the taste drier. Some people prefer that way of drinking, while others prefer icy cold sake.
      I hope you can find a way to drink sake that you prefer!
