@@rayanna7188 They're all from NY, formed their band in 78' (would have been mid teens for all of the group). They started out as more a funk/punk kinda band, would move onto Hip Hop early 80's. License to Ill came out 1986, they still kept their punk/funk sound throughout their earlier albums while also getting heavily into the more jazzy and sample based technology that Hip Hop was embracing through the early to mid 80's and into the golden age of the 90's, they were there for it all. Pauls Boutique is often cited as a kind of foreshadowing for the 90's sound, having dropped in 89'.

6:18 the verse" Thank Moe Dee for 'Sticking to Themes' " is a call out to Kool Moe Dee for making a report card grading 25 rap groups/artists of that time where he ranked the Beastie Boys dead last. A score of 1-10 was given in 10 categories: Vocabulary, Articulation, Creativity, Originality, Versatility, Voice, Records, Stage Presence, and Sticking to Themes. As you may have guessed, the only 10 they received was in the 'Sticking to Themes' category. Needless to say, much of this song is them addressing their haters.

Old school cats remember these guys, 80's legends. This was their comeback. Times changed , hence the beat, but they kept that 80's vibe. And still rep NYC. I love the whole Japanese 70's movie style.

I don't know if I was ever more hyped when a song came out than this one. Probably Big Pun's Capitol Punishment album as the only other time I was that excited for an album. Also when Mix master Mike joined, he really modernized them in 2000. Keep in mind the Beastie Boys have been a punk rock band since 1978, and switched over to rap as soon as the genre came out. True pioneers of the culture, and get respect from all the greats.

The "Intergalactic" video was made in June 1998. It was directed by Adam Yauch under the pseudonym Nathanial Hörnblowér,[1] and it revolves around a giant robot causing destruction by fighting a giant octopus-headed creature in a city while popping, a parody of, or tribute to, Japanese Kaiju films (specifically the series finale of Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot). Various scenes are filmed in the Shibuya and Shinjuku train stations in Tokyo, Japan. Throughout the band is wearing the bright uniforms of (Koji) Japanese street construction workers. The video was a regular on Total Request Live and won the award for Best Hip-Hop Video at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards. The Beastie Boys performed "Three MC's and One DJ" and "Intergalactic" at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards.
The music video also somewhat parodies Japanese Super Sentai shows, which are the basis for Power Rangers and ranked number 64 on MuchMusic's 100 Best Videos. Complex wrote that, "We get the feeling Godzilla creator Tomoyuki Tanaka, who passed the year before the 'Intergalactic' single was released, would be proud." (copied from Wikipedia)

I’ve been listening to Beastie Boys since they debuted in the 80s and just learned today about the “Thanks Moe Dee for ‘Sticking to Themes’” line.
Apparently American rapper Kool Moe Dee released a report card on 25 artists giving 1 to 10 in 10 categories, vocabulary, articulation, creativity, originality, versatility, voice, records, stage presence, sticking to themes, and innovating rhythms.
Our BBoys scored dead last with a 70, next highest being a 77. But they scored 10 points under “Sticking to Themes.”
So yes, I think he’s speaking to some haters in this song. 😅😂
