Loved doing this video! Hopefully this answers some of the most pressing spironolactone questions. In the right patient this medication can make a huge difference!
Hi Dr. Ellis. This was THE BEST video I've seen on spironolactone! I've been taking it for a year on 100mg/day. I still get a couple cysts though, but still a great improvement. The biggest side effect for me is the irregular cycles and spotting. I'm thinking of taking evening primrose oil as well. I wonder if this is okay.
Hello. I have hormonal acne. My question with this medicament is I have to take the medication forever or when my face gets better I can stop using it. Thank you
If other oil control methods aren’t effective (benzoyl peroxide, hydroxy acids, niacinamide, etc.) then topical spiro may be worth exploring even though it hasn’t been extensively studied in that capacity.
I have been struggling with painful hormonal acne. I just did a hormone panel and my dr is leaning towards me having pcos would this be something that could also help
I have a question that wasnt asked! If you DO NOT have high testosterone, will spiro lower your testosterone when you dont necessarily want it lowered? I cant seem to find the clear information.
It took about 6 months to see serious results, but two years later and I'm still completely acne free (save for the odd mask acne or period pimple). Oral spironalactone was a game changer.
@@jessicakay3695 I still take it. I'm on a very low dose (25mg) and have been the whole time. My derm recommended going to a higher dose early on, but I stayed low because the diuretic side-effect was really powerful for me and I didn't wanna be peeing every 5 minutes. I'm not sure if I'll ever stop taking it, but I haven't seen my derm since before the pandemic, so maybe it's safe to get off it now. But my skin is so clear!!! And the side-effects has completely gone away for me. It's just a part of my morning routine I don't even think about anymore.
I take it orally and it is the BEST thing that happened to me. I adore my dermatologist for suggesting it. I cannot say enough how life changing it was for my hormonal acne. Within a couple of months it had made such a difference. I now hardly get a break out. I wish I found my dermatologist years ago. He changed my face. No more painful long lasting outbreaks! I can’t say enough
Oral Spironolactone is the only thing that helped with my hormonal & cystic acne. 🙌🏻👏🏻 For reference, I had super oily skin prior and the medication has made my skin more normal to oily.
Spironolactone is the only thing that has worked for me after persistent hormonal acne. Seriously talk to your derm if you think this could be effective and get their opinion for your unique case! Edit: the diuretic effect realllllyyy works on me. so be prepared for that to be the case for you too lmao
I’m starting a treatment with soironolactone but I have a question. When you stopped the treatment , how does it works? Like do we have breakouts again and hormonal problem again?
Spironolactone and adapalene are the ONLY things that cleared my hormonal acne. Once I ran out of my spironolactone prescription (about 30 days) I was able to ward off my acne with a retinoid alone. I guess I'm a rare case who didn't have to stay on long term.
Spiro was a lifesaver for me. In addition to clearing up acne, it made it so I could stop using acne medication soaps and BPO. Also, I didn’t have to worry about breaking out from stuff with oil in it, so I could expand my makeup choices. Along with retin-a, it gave me generally trouble-free skin. But I can’t take it in the daytime because it makes you have to pee, and there’s zero time in between when you realize you need to go and have to go. Definitely made me almost pee on myself a few times. You have GOT to get straight to the toilet the moment you feel like you have to pee with this medication. ALSO: Yaz BCP works wonders, performs like spiro and regulates hormones from menstrual cycle. It’s awesome.
Just a small reminder that it is a POTASSIUM-SPARING diuretic. While the dosages specific to acne treatment may not be too high, if you have any issues with HYPERKALEMIA (high potassium levels), this may not be the best route for you. Hopefully dermatologists will do labs before prescribing this. On that note, I love the effects of this for acne treatment and hair growth :)
Thanks for noting this. I have never heard a dermatologist mention this and only found out thru personal research. Do well to watch your diet and see your GP on a regular basis for blood work when taking this medicine.

@@NYS30 Hi! I wasn’t prescribed mine for acne: mine is for hirsutism (excess facial hair growth). I’m sad to report that in the 3 months I’ve been on it, I haven’t seen a difference.
I take it orally and can vouch for the quick results as they described. I still get hormonal breakouts but they are less painful, less inflamed, and just more manageable overall. Def recommend.
It took me about 6 months to find the right dosage and to start seeing results but once it starting working it was a game changer! It takes time but worth the wait! I have been on it for about 1 1/2 years and it’s completely eliminated my hormonal acne and perioral dermatitis. Thanks for this video Susan! Helped answer some questions I had been wondering regarding long term use!
No one is bringing up the fact that Spironolactone is literally prescribed to most transgendered women as a testosterone-blocker for their medical transition since it’s an anti-androgen. Many trans woman including myself experienced clearing of their blemishes and decreased sebum production as well. Orally they can make you a bit nauseous in my experience
YES! i was surprised too that it was never brought up, especially when they were talking about hair growth - the derm was like “idk why it would add hair on your head but minimize facial hair” and it’s like well, yeah it’s a hormonal medication for feminine identifying people..

I was prescribed spironolactone when I was diagnosed with PCOS years ago and it worked. I was later changed to birth control (not anymore) and lately has been thinking about asking to be put on spironolactone again because the symptoms of PCOS are coming back hard and birth control makes me feel not so good :( This video came at the perfect time to make up my mind, so thank you

I've been taking oral spironlactone for two years and it helped me so much with my hormonal acne. It took a couple of months to a year to see results and it's so worth it. I still get a few breakouts but not as bad as it used to be.
@@kellified Yes, I did experience dizzyness which is common from spiro but I split my pill in half and take it at different times throughout the day so it's gone now.
@@kellified It took a couple of months, so about 3-5 months to see results for myself. I started out at 50mg for a while then boosted to 75mg. I now take 100mg pills every day that's split in half through out the day. Also, what helped is having a great acne facial routine, I started only using products from the brand Face Reality recommended by my aesthetician and it helped tremendously as well.
Spironolactone is the ONLY thing that helped me clear my severe cystic acne. Around my period every month I would get a cyst on my chin so large that friends and family were concerned for me. If I bent over, the blood would rush to the cyst and it would make me cry. By the time one cyst would get flattened - not heal! - another would pop up. I’ve been on Spiro for 3 years and I have had only one small cyst since! It has changed my life and honestly saved my skin. I couldn’t suggest it more! I get my blood checked every 6 months for all levels, so just keep on top of that, but I’ve never had any issue.

I was put on this in my mid-late 20s briefly (in my 30s now) after breaking out on my jawline (I actually never really broke out here when I was young, and had not broken out in years at the time, so it was odd) , and just wanted to say - while effective for many, it made me pee like crazy, and it made my blood pressure too low, despite trying to keep myself hydrated. The whole experience was so uncomfortable, I had to be taken off after 2-3 months or so. It also didn't clear my skin at all. Just keep in mind, it still does what it is marketed to do. Ultimately, I started juicing and making smoothies again (I had dropped the habit because of timing issues/laziness), and my skin cleared up again. That's just what worked for me. HTH
Hi can you please share your recipes fro juicing and smoothies ? My derm has just put me on this and I am not a fan of medication at all and working my 12shifts I can’t constantly keep running to the bathroom. Please would greatly appreciate it

But I’ve been experiencing hair shedding for awhile now and I’m thinking it’s hormonal… I wonder if I should get in a higher dosage if spironolactone to treat hair loss / maintain clear skin.
Shenell Hello 🤗, my dosage is the same since the start. I take it along with Woman’s Rogaine and I’ve been able to keep the hair that I have without more loss. My hair seems to shed less and it looks a bit fuller. Overall I am pretty happy with the results.
Oral spironolactone cleared my hormonal acne but left me with horrible gut issues, weakness, fatigue, and low energy. And many of these side effects took a while to pop up and have taken SO long to heal despite quitting spiro years ago. Your acne will all come back when you stop it as well. It is not worth the side effects and long term effects on your body in my opinion! @@NYS30 I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this! I totally know the feeling. Everyone’s situation is so different with hormones, but for me I had hypothalamic amenorrhea after quitting the pill & spiro, so I worked on easing my exercise and eating more calories to ensure my body felt safe enough to have a period. I also optimize my sleep as much as I can, keep stress down, try to eat as healthy as I can (though I definitely have pizza still and treats). Once I got my period back, my acne improved a lot. It’s not perfect, but it’s been a long process and I’m better than where I started. Best of luck!
I was on spironolactone for a little over a year. 3 months into taking it, it tanked my testosterone and I found myself on HRT. I went on a high dose of Spiro and the side effects-what it did to my cycle, oil production EVERYWHERE, hair loss, I couldn’t deal with it. Also retinol for me has been more affective, spiro basically did nothing (was on it for a full year). When I went off of it, I gained 10 lbs. So you guys, my recommendation is even though you’re desperate, would not recommend.
@@terimorris3560 yeah it’s supposed to. I think I was one of the few with an adverse effects that are under reported. I have since stopped though and my hairline has returned to normal. But it killed the oil in my skin and my scalp. I’d recommend holistic options or retinol.
@@juliat9211 I think you can deal with that by just adding oil to your scalp. I mean, it’s just one step you need to take to mitigate the effects of the medication. You chose not to do that. The common sense thing to do is just app,y hair or scalp oils. Also, if your skin was still over-producing oil, it’s probably because of some topical you were applying. If it stopped oil in your scalp, it stopped oil on your face. But if you are using harsh soaps or astringents on your skin, it will still over-produce oil. 🙄
My god, if I knew of this when I was in my 20s I would have been in heaven. Still happy to know about all of the benefits even with my breakouts controlled more.

Spironolactone worked for me, but I switched to diindolylmethane supplements because I can't be bothered to get a potassium blood test just to get a refill. Are there any experts we can ask about DIM supplements vs spironolactone?
The only thing this woman said that I didn’t find to be 100% on point is that there’s no purging. Not to say she isn’t right, but acne can sit underneath the skin for up to 3 months before ever reaching the surface. I feel like this is probably why spirinolactone isn’t a long term solution (unless you plan to take it your whole life) cause I feel like the acne would just come right back once off the medication if it never comes up and out of the skin , no?
Do you need to take spironolactone at the same time everyday? I have been taking 100mg once a day since August and have not seen a ton of results, but the time I take it everyday honestly varies and maybe it also has not been long enough to see results yet. I'm not sure just wanted to see what you thought!
This medication really needs to be taken with food- otherwise it’s bioavailability is greatly diminished. I don’t hear it discussed much, which is crazy- so start taking your dose with food and your results will likely improve. :)
I couldn’t even make a week on 25mg as it caused me to have panic attacks and horrible scary mood swings ): hopefully between my tret and BC it’ll get better
Spirinalactone isn’t prescribed for acne in my country, but I’m hoping that they’ll follow the lead of the US and it will become available for when I come off my birth control eventually, because I know my hormones will get very confused
Will toting this medication as an acne treatment, potentially drive up the price of this medication? I take this for other health issues, and am just curious! Love your content, Susan!
I don't think this video is particularly informed in terms of topical hormonal acne treatment. There's a newly approved topical medication called clascoterone (Winlevi) that acts by blocking androgen receptors in the skin and is supported by strong clinical evidence (unlike the topical spironolactone that they're peddling here). It's safe for males as well.
This seems like a biased comment. New approved medications are hard to get due to insurance coverage issues while topical spironolactone is widely available through compounding pharmacies. Your comment seems misinformed. Please list any relevant conflicts of interest.
@@rainmanvs there is no COI on my part. I'm just a medical student. The fact is still that there's ample medical evidence to show that winlevi works for acne as a topical agent, whereas spironolactone has not been shown to do that in randomized clinical trials (you can view study abstracts quite easily on Pubmed). As a supporter of evidence-based medicine, I am only pointing out the fact that the video is missing critical information while peddling an unproven treatment. How is that biased? I'm not saying to fully push for winlevi because again, that's a discussion between the patient and their doctor, but at least mention it as an alternative. Would you be happy to see a retinoid video that only peddles retinyl palmitate without mentioning adapalene and tretinoin as proven alternatives?
@@benjaminnhlam2867 No one uses retinyl palmitate topically as an active and neither is it an fda approved drug so your example is simply wrong. They were discussing the science behind spironolactone orally and topically. Nothing is being peddled. Also there are double blind placebo controlled studies with topical spironolactone...might want to check again on PubMed. Also evidence based doesn't mean just RCTs. Looks like you need to review the definition of evidence based again.
@@rainmanvs they were peddling the prescription service that offers topical spironolactone. As well, RCTs on spironolactone are limited and do not show clear clinical improvement of acnes - I know what I read. I never said that RCTs are the only form of evidence, but based on the hierarchy of clinical evidence level, winlevi trumps sprinolactone as a topical agent for acne. In fact, spironolactone as a topical IS NOT an FDA-approved agent either. Its oral form is.
@@benjaminnhlam2867 Clearly you don't understand FDA approval. Spironolactone is an FDA approved agent and it is used off-label both orally for acne and topically for acne. It's only FDA approved orally for hypertension under special circumstances. So it is an FDA approved agent but used off-label for acne as well. Retinyl palmitate (which you side stepped in your reply) is NOT FDA approved at all. It's simply an additive into topicals and not comparable to tretinoin or adapalene as an active. So one wouldn't talk about using retinyl palmitate topically as a retinoid. That's just not how it works and so your analogy doesn't work either. Here's what you said: "...ample medical evidence to show that winlevi works for acne as a topical agent, whereas spironolactone has not been shown to do that in randomized clinical trials." Actually, there are randomized clinical trials that show it works (not to the same level as clascoterone since a company was willing to fund the clinical studies) so your comment is just wrong. Clascoterone is also an option but it's not necessary to talk about clascoterone nor peddling if the conversation focuses on spironolactone. Also, the final point is that not everyone has access to the best insurances to be able to get clascoterone. Just because a medication is FDA approved doesn't make it easy to access. Insurances companies will deny it until you've gone down their checklist (known as step therapy) and many require the use of topical antibiotics first unless you can push back and appeal. People have different levels of access, different insurances are strict on what they allow or don't allow, and new medications are frequently not covered or patients are footed with an enormous cost. So when you take all that into account, spironolactone is a very reasonable discussion point.

I've been on so many different oral and topical meds over the years, and spironolactone has saved my skin. SO thankful for it .
I just got prescribed this today and was about to start researching it when I came across the video. What wonderful timing!

@@NYS30 Hi! I wasn’t prescribed mine for acne: mine is for hirsutism (excess facial hair growth). I’m sad to report that in the 3 months I’ve been on it, I haven’t seen a difference.
You can tell Susan used to be a news anchor her facial expressions are always on point :)
Hi, what's your dosage?
whats your dosage
No one is bringing up the fact that Spironolactone is literally prescribed to most transgendered women as a testosterone-blocker for their medical transition since it’s an anti-androgen. Many trans woman including myself experienced clearing of their blemishes and decreased sebum production as well. Orally they can make you a bit nauseous in my experience
YES! i was surprised too that it was never brought up, especially when they were talking about hair growth - the derm was like “idk why it would add hair on your head but minimize facial hair” and it’s like well, yeah it’s a hormonal medication for feminine identifying people..
Thank for educating me I had no idea and take it too for acne
True but it's messes with cortisol I heard and causes midsection weight gain?
At what dosage is it prescribed to them though?
@@lUhVrachiee Hello, this was very informative! Do you know at what dosage you’ll see hair growth? I was later changed to birth control (not anymore) and lately has been thinking about asking to be put on spironolactone again because the symptoms of PCOS are coming back hard and birth control makes me feel not so good :(
This video came at the perfect time to make up my mind, so thank you
I started taking spironolactone 2 weeks ago (100mg per day). I am so excited for my acne to start healing and clearing so I can get my confident back. Thank you so much for this great info. 🙏🏾
How long did it take to see results?
I've been meaning to look into this drug more since my hormonal acne hasn't completely cleared with the pill. Also glad to see Dr. Ellis again! 🙌🏻
I've been taking oral spironlactone for two years and it helped me so much with my hormonal acne. It took a couple of months to a year to see results and it's so worth it. I still get a few breakouts but not as bad as it used to be.
Did you experience any adverse side effects?
@@kellified Yes, I did experience dizzyness which is common from spiro but I split my pill in half and take it at different times throughout the day so it's gone now.
@@michellein thank you! How long did it take to see results when you started?
@@kellified It took a couple of months, so about 3-5 months to see results for myself. I started out at 50mg for a while then boosted to 75mg. I now take 100mg pills every day that's split in half through out the day. Also, what helped is having a great acne facial routine, I started only using products from the brand Face Reality recommended by my aesthetician and it helped tremendously as well.
I've never heard of that brand before, but I'm going to check it out!! Thanks for the advice 😀

I just started Spironolactone a week ago! Perfect timing 🌟
I just started taking spironolacrone I have started spotting I’m 56 and went through the change 2 years ago should I be concerned
HTH
Hey what smoothies or juices do you recommend?
Hi can you please share your recipes fro juicing and smoothies ? My derm has just put me on this and I am not a fan of medication at all and working my 12shifts I can’t constantly keep running to the bathroom. Please would greatly appreciate it
I started this due to my hair thinning and so far I'm seeing good results!

Hello, I was wondering at what dosage? I’ve heard it helps with hair loss but I’m not sure. I just started taking spironolactone like a month and half and it’s really helped clear my skin. But I’ve been experiencing hair shedding for awhile now and I’m thinking it’s hormonal… I wonder if I should get in a higher dosage if spironolactone to treat hair loss / maintain clear skin.
I got this prescribed for my hair loss . No wonder my skin got clearer 🤗
Any improvement? Dosage?
I'm now using Apostrophe topical spiro and supporting my hormones through diet and lifestyle changes and am having good results!

So you guys, my recommendation is even though you’re desperate, would not recommend.
Thought they said it would help with hair loss?
@@terimorris3560 yeah it’s supposed to. I think I was one of the few with an adverse effects that are under reported. I have since stopped though and my hairline has returned to normal. But it killed the oil in my skin and my scalp. I’d recommend holistic options or retinol.
@@juliat9211 sorry to hear that and thank you for the advise. X

Hi Reiko, you should find an integrative dermatologist and they can discuss this in detail.
I’m on it now and still get a cystic pimple during my period but all in all it’s ok.
My savior!
I'm not sure just wanted to see what you thought!
just take it at the same time what's the issue? I'd say you can see peak improvements at 2-3 months.
Female pattern hair loss! And natural treatments and prevention
Great video and really useful information! I just created one on the same topic

Any interactions with supplements?
It made me so sick that I couldn't keep using it😭
This sounds like a holy grail but I can’t even get through to my doc to get a referral to the dermatologist 😭
