I found a broken keychain with the thumbnail illustration and have wondered what the hell series this was for like .....two years? Thank you for solving the mystery!
It’s funny how in Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, they kept Carbuncle in and renamed them to “HasBean,” it’s so fucking stupid that I can’t help but them that sometimes. We need something even more stupid, like “Carbean Hasbuncle,” that would be perfect.
in my personal experience, the outsiders/newbies seem to inherently LOVE Sig, therefore the best course of action is to recommend them the games in which Sig appears.
I gravitated more towards Ringo and Raffina, though thats cause i find Ringo to be the funniest character and solid protag design and Raffina was destined due to my love of snarky anime rich b*tches with a secret heart of gold. Also shes a martial arts punch girl as a bonus
19:48 hi c: I read the original tumblr article on this topic. Suffice to say I pretty much agreed with it then, and subsequently I agree with this video. Couple points I do want to go over: 6:24 - I'm a huge advocate for letting people take the game at their own pace. Puyo's a video game after all and they're supposed to be fun. Forcing others into a specific way of playing is pretty much just giving them homework as a prerequisite to “enjoying” the game. Getting like gajillion chains is satisfying, don't get me wrong, but It'll take a while to get to that point whether you're tunnled into a specific playstyle or not. Having fun should be the priority, getting "good" is a side effect. It's what happened to me at the end of the day! - Side Note: Also regarding specific forms on the more competitive side anyway, I'd kinda suggest finding a playstyle that kinda just clicks with you, whether it be form or approach to the game in general. Player expression is still something that's very much possible in Puyo. 7:00 - I actually have a close friend that suffered this fate from one of the best players in our region under the pretense that player would be "going easy" on him, then proceeding to 8-11 chain him constantly. Poor fella was traumatised by the event hasn't given Puyo a chance since, despite hanging around the community for a long while. This is a real thing that happened, don't do this please c: Regarding Gimmick Modes: Honestly I kinda feel gimmick modes are a bit undervalued. Some can be a bit overwhelming, but some of it can just be dumb fun if the premise is just popping puyos, plus they can help to shake up the monotomy of tsu every now and again. A big reason why I hold 20th Anniversary so dearly in its story mode (15th to some extent too, but the roulette stuff can be kinda just... ehhh not in the mood) 19:08 - Yeah Champions just takes away like 75% of what makes Puyo kinda special as a series. If you're a turbo nerd at Puyo, yeah it's great!... but you aren't gonna start as a turbo nerd, any other game is better starting out.
No shame in it. Statistically speaking and some law of averages out there many people were introduced to it, and if they came out a fan that's great~ But I can't in good concioncious recommend to a newbie when other games are available.
10:11 SAMEEE OH MY GOD. This and many other things are what made me leave the fandom. It's just too annoying how people hype children's games as ~~dark and mature~~ a bit too much. With the exception of one or two games, Kirby isn't the gorefest people make it out to be. It's okay to like things because they're cute and challenging, you know?
hello! here as someone that's wanted to get into the rest of the series that's only had a bit of experience (i've only played puyo tetris 1 and 2). I appreciate how you went over things here! it's nice to have some concrete info from someone experienced with the series on what games are best for people like me. I think i'll give puyo puyo tsu a shot if i can manage to patch in the translation, it should be a good spot to sharpen my skills and get me more familiar with how to play well.
I've found out about Puyo Puyo due to an animation I sae yesterday about a character saying some of the most unhinged things I've ever heard in a game (presumably unintentionally), and wanted to find out what it was about. I've been getting into Tetris recently, so I think I'll go for PPT2 as a fun game to try :D
Great video! You really hit the nail on the head with what to do & don't with others who aren't familiar with the series! I wish I knew some of these things in the past... Idk if I'd rank Puzzle Pop as high as you did for entry points purely because it has limited accessibility. I have yet to play it at all because I don't own any apple devices. One last thing: here's another reason why people enjoy Puyo, even if it's not exclusive to the franchise: the music! There are some absolute BOPS in there!
The reason for PuzPop being so high is that the Apple Arcade exclusivity isn't gonna be permanent. Its placement so high is more of a future-proof measure. Didn't even think of the music whoops. But that's pretty much like the characters and the visuals. Feel free to bring that up recommending.
Puzlow here. As a guy that got into Puyo thanks to Puyo Fever 2 DS and Gogotte, I don't have any addendums to say: your video is really great, Mamono! I'm honestly really curious on how the Precise Museum's Puyo Fever 2 PSP patch(coming soon) will change the "Puyo Puyo Fever 2" status, to be fair. We hope we can invite more people into Puyo!
I don't think Fever 2's status would change too much. The lack of a good translation right now is a hurdle yes. But it's still a game founded on the contentious Fever rule. But as you said, wait and see what the future holds.
i'm biased since it was my own introduction to the series back in the day, but i do feel fever 1 is still my personal recommendation as a nice starting point to puyo. It's a bit outdated with the couple of mistranslated names compared to the later official translations, and the English dub is kindaaa bad imo, but besides those points, it's pretty good a starting point! Of course, this is going off the mind set of not minding someone's introduction being with the fever ruleset, but I feel the fever rules are fine for just casual gameplay? Like i felt it made playing puyo fun as an utter newbie since it gives you tastes of big chains, and makes getting past harder matches in the story modes more manageable. I sorta view it as "puyo training wheels", to put it bluntly. Plus since it was a reboot you get to experience the wacky character interactions and endearing story without any sort of background knowledge, which is a plus! Like the only thing you're missing out is that Arle and Carbuncle... existed before. And the fact that the game is pretty quaint on content is honestly a plus in my books, since you can experience it all (Runrun, Wakuwaku, and both Harahara runs are about 30~ matches) in about a day or 2. And from then on, the person you're showing it to can decide to play the other, more dense games afterwards if they want to. ...idk, i felt i'd get this all outta my system since I'm a weird person who has fever 1 as their favorite game, and it wasn't even mentioned as a potential starting point here, so i gotta defend it :P
Tbh what got me into puyopuyo was watching tournament matches and being in awe at how cracked of a human being one would have to be git gud. I look at competetive puyopuyo the way literally every other game genre fan looks at fighting game matches that go beyond button mashing lol. But instead of being disuaded, it got me intrigued. That and spicy Dracocentauros fanart.
You should seriously consider dropping the TTS and opting to use your own voice over, because it is, frankly, grating to listen to on end. You mentioned some degree of anxiety in another reply, and you'll have to forgive me for giving unrequested advice, but spending time listening to your own voice and attempting to master it into something listenable helps with that sort of thing (speaking from experience). You've gone through the effort of adding closed captions, so even if your only resource is an awful built-in laptop microphone or something it'd still be preferable to the ancient robotic TTS.
I would. But you don't have enough perspective. My anxiety can reach levels so bad it manifests into actual physical pain potentially resulting in a panic attack. Not always. But it's just something I don't wanna chance ever. I had a case of that the other day for something way more embarrassing than recording and constantly listening back to my voice in editing. It was painful. For me it's sadly TTS or bust if I make anything like this.
For me it would be puyo pop on gameboy advance and DS but mostly on the DS because of the gamecube controller. Seriously guys the GameCube controller is not the best when It comes up to puzzle games.
It is Text-To-Speech (TTS). This specific one is a tool meant to read text for you, and it's also useful for someone like me with anxiety to speak to people.
The audio is not generative AI, but TTS uses synthesized voice noises. One's an ethical mine field the other is a tool. TTS tools aren't meant to replace the voice/work of anyone unlike AI voices. It's made specifically for reading and speech aid. The video is more about the words I am saying than the voice that's saying it. If you can't get over that. I understand that. But it's the only way I am comfortable relaying information. This specific one is a tool meant to read text for you, and it's also useful for someone like me with anxiety to speak to people.

The best way to get people into Puyo Puyo is to let them play Puyo Puyo! 😀
Sometimes it doesn't take much! ...But it almost *never* needs a whole lot.
I found a broken keychain with the thumbnail illustration and have wondered what the hell series this was for like .....two years? Thank you for solving the mystery!

The best way to get someone into Puyo Puyo is to introduce them to Suketoudara!
Thanks to you now I had motivation to learn puyo puyo once again, first time interested thanks to puyo puyo tetris on 3ds and played in 2023
in my personal experience, the outsiders/newbies seem to inherently LOVE Sig, therefore the best course of action is to recommend them the games in which Sig appears.
As a bad Puyo player I can confirm I am a massive fan of Sig
everybody loves sig
I gravitated more towards Ringo and Raffina, though thats cause i find Ringo to be the funniest character and solid protag design and Raffina was destined due to my love of snarky anime rich b*tches with a secret heart of gold. Also shes a martial arts punch girl as a bonus
For some reason I’m a huge Sig fan after 2-3 years but when I started out I was actually a huge Witch fan for some reason
What grabbed me about Puyo Puyo was the artstyle. It reminded me of WarioWare, my favorite video game franchise right now.
Ayyy, nice.
New vid!
As someone who's really into Puyo for Story and characters, This seems like a good watch.
This is seriously a great way to get someone into the series. PuyoPuyo in a serious level. I do like the direction you went with this

I'd definately pin this comment if I didn't wanna promote stuff. Good addendums, Schoell.
My face hearing Champions being bashed as a bad starting game, when it was the game that got me into Puyo Puyo 💀

@@somenerd31415 Good luck! Remember chaining (combos) are important. Can't just match 4.
I think i got into puyo this year, i still have no idea how it happened but im not complaining
this is a gamechanger!
