This is why I love his design so much. It's fitting of the character and makes him super fun to play, I love characters that feel like playable boss fights. He's got mad power but his linear moves, blind points, and literal built-in weak spot all keep him in check (not to mention being able to use one of his tools again him, namely his crown). Despite this, I still like how he has notable techniques with the crown and blunderbuss to throw off opponents; especially how he can fake out some options with his blunderbuss, kind of like what he does in his boss fight in DKC2.
@@rosestrohm7986 To be fair the reason a lot of us King K Rool players repeat stuff like that is cause our other options pale so heavily in comparison. Want to land with anything other than nair? I Never noticed that his outfit was kind of lagging behind his stage so-to-speak, that’s kinda funny. I gotta wonder if that’s intentional, since his first appearance doesn’t seem that weird, his second matches still matches the overall theme in the game and the last one also make sense as a Frankenstein reference
I think I figured out how to fix heavies in smash: reduce the amount of hitstun they receive from attacks. If King K Rool received 80% of the hitstun that an average character received, he would be much harder to combo and his survivability would actually mean something.
I'm sure that Hitstun is already reduced due to the knockback being lower. That being said, it seems it could be a good idea to make hitstun be affected by the square of weight+100 instead of proportional, or making the factor being dependant on only initial damage instead of total knockback.
@@N12015 so you’re right that weight affects the hitstun calculation because it is a variable in the knockback calculation, and the knockback value is used to calculate hitstun. That being said, that ratio of hitstun to knockback is equivalent regardless of weight, which is what I think we’d like to change here. So currently a heavy will receive slightly less hitstun, but will also receive less knockback, meaning the other player doesn’t have to move as far to follow up. I think this is why in practice heavies are still combo food despite their weight having a small downward effect on hitstun, because between big hit boxes and lower knockback making it easier to follow up it doesn’t matter if they can act ever so slightly earlier. So to give them a little bit more of an edge in a thematic way, they should even less hitstun to simulate the way a big person can shrug off a hit.

krool is one of the few heavies i can fight and not ever break a sweat on, his gameplan falls apart that much. Every single match ive lost to a krool it feel very justified because 90% of the time they were the better player.
For the first few months of ultimate's release, I played K Rool religiously. I'd beat my friends, and felt like I was doing pretty well. Then my best friend picked up Young Link and I got subjected to what felt like the worst matchup in the history of matchups. It got so bad that I dropped the character altogether, and I haven't looked back since.
I main the croc, as well, and that match-up is surprisingly fun. The K Rool grab game is a great way to punish rebel guard and f-tilt armor through faster attacks often leaves them reeling.

He needed two critical buffs to deal with the roster but never got them. K rools moves are more satisfying to hit than other characters for me and also trying to find setups
The more I see the problems with heavies in smash the more I appreciate rivals of aether, and that doesn't mean that rivals heavies are better, it's just that the mechanics of the game give them an edge, for example there's this mechanic called Hit cancel (Wisely made a video talking about it if u want to see it) but what it does is that when u hit an opponent in the air u can fastfall immediately and avoid all the end lag of ur move, this would be amazing for Krool, it would be busted if Krool could hit u with an upair to immediately negate that second of endlag to go and continue with another aereal, but what makes it fair is that for u to be able to Hit cancel u need to HIT THE OPPONENT, so if u wiff and atack and fail there's still all the endlag of the move. What I'm trying to say with all this is that the heavies in smash have problems that on paper look so irrelevant that in fact are game changers, and these deterrents can be changed so easily that is basically a joke at this point
Mega Man probably IS good with comboes, I just somehow dont know shit about him as a character, except for hearing that Metal Blade is appearently good? I kinda want this too.
Id like to clarify by saying Mega Man isn’t “good with combos”. He’s not built like Fox or Sheik or Greninja. What he does have is really flashy though. Metal blade sets up for footstools and drag downs and all the really technical stuff that Mega Man has.
@@AriDowns8 The biggest complaint I heard is Mega Man is so faithful to his boss fights that he does't reflect the feel of his levels, unlike Mario and Luigi. The fact that his neutral aerial is at the weakest in the game, doesn't help ether. So mega man's play style is not easy to figure out and his a bit of a learning curve. Not helping matters is that no one likes to play on Dr Wily's Castle, because of the Yellow Devil.
i think i agree with your assesment: K. Rool's main failing is that he has no "thow it out" move that he can spam when there's nothing better to do, closest thing he has for that is his up tilt, and even that one doesnt cover his back and is still quite laggy
The one and only thing you need to know as a King K Rool main: For the 10% of players that know how to kill you, half your moves are useless so rely on Nair, Titls, Bait Grab, Spike and Projectiles. Also if you're being ledge trapped, immediately recover to land on the stage from the sky although you'll take a mean hit but its better then losing a stock
unfortunately for my friends, they are not pros (neither am I but I know more about smash characters than them) so when I go K Rool, they lose HARD. Sooooo I play other characters to not just obliterate them. That said I play K Rool because dammit I'm not competitive, I'm sentimental, and Donkey Kong 64 was my childhood game and to have K Rool in was a gift from Sakurai.
Same. My mains are most of thr villains (K. Rool, Ridley, Ganon, Dedede, Mewtwo, Dark Samus, etc), and while my favs to play of the bunch are decidedly low-tier, I still play them because I generally always liked the character since I was a kid. The fact that Ultimate has so many to choose from, especially bringing in K. Rool and Ridley after decades of requests, is still surreal. Hopefully they all return whenever the next Smash comes around. Would love to see Porky or Eggman in mechs too.
i was super excited to see king k rool be invited into smash, but i never thought i would main him (Banjo Kazooie too, but nothing clicked). Him and bowser are my most satisfying heavy mains. Watching this video, i would surely play him all the time again.
I’d like to add that, with his projectiles and armor, K Rool has the best neutral game of any of the heavies. Although Incin comes close. K Rool is really happy to stay in neutral and trade stray hits.
I think it'd be cool if you did Meta Knight next. He is a character that has a lot of good things on paper (recovery, edge guarding, combos, frame data, straightforward neutral, good specials, etc) but doesn't seem to have much representation.
K rool is surprising technical at high level. He has alot of gimicks he can get u with. But ifbu are ready it kinda dont matter Also villager video when?
I remember super early game people thought k rool was super good, then after like a year people agreed he was trash. A former pr player in my region who no longer competes actually predicted him being bad; after playing him in tournament early ult.
As a k rool main, the problem with him is that he’s essentially a one trick pony. Once you learn his gimmicks he doesn’t have much to do. I think nintendo should’ve reduced the end lag for a some of his attacks and he’d be better
True, but I’d say that, with his projectiles and armor, K Rool has the best neutral game of any of the heavies. K Rool is really happy to stay in neutral and trade stray hits
The reason like K Rool most is because he's a menace when we are both off the stage. This oversized leather purse can go to the bottom of the mf bastzone just to back air or Nair you and safely go back to the ledge. If he back throws you when you play a character with a bad recovery, you can kiss your stock goodbye.
K Rool is S tier when playing with 10 extra frames of input delay. It's much harder to whiff punish him or react to his projectiles and strong attacks. This character is perfectly designed to terrorize laggy online matches.
I still can’t believe he got nerfs at the beginning of the game because of Wi-Fi advantages, people didn’t want to get good against a low tier character.
I love playing K. Rool and I would main him if you took away belly armor and his weight in exchange for not making him a heavy and big body. His moves just click with me so much. I will say that K. Rool is like Byleth in that he can punish a bad option very badly, but he’s also like Palutena in the fact that he has counterplay to borderline anything, it’s just up to the player to pick the right option at the right time. If you can, you lay waste to your opponent.
Krool not being a heavyweight is a really weird concept that I don't think would ever work cause canonically he's bigger and heavier than Donkey Kong who's been an established heavy weight since the beginning of smash. Idk I just cannot see this massive, bulked up crocodile be anything other than a heavyweight
@@Omnirose I was thinking more along the lines of giving K. Rool's frame data and hitboxes to a smaller character. Like for example, if you stuck his moves onto Byleth and just changed a few animations for it to make sense. I didn't really explain that and I do agree K. Rool himself is and should be a heavy character.
K. Rool is def a heavyweight by design and canon size but I'd trade being a superheavyweight to being a mid-heavyweight for a little faster normals and smaller body/collision box. However, I personally think the belly armor should be kept bcz it makes related moves using it look less like copypastes, which are differentiated by it, esp Down Smash. His moves click with me so much too.
Let it be known however that if Gangplank Galleon is set to play as the stage music K. Rool players become unstoppable

He has shit combos and deals 10 dmg, video done
Finally, a video essay to show to my friends on why I'm not the problem
😂
i think i agree with your assesment: K. Rool's main failing is that he has no "thow it out" move that he can spam when there's nothing better to do, closest thing he has for that is his up tilt, and even that one doesnt cover his back and is still quite laggy
IT’S MY BOY!!!
Me and my friend both play K. Rool. He is a lot of fun.
He truly is
The one and only thing you need to know as a King K Rool main: For the 10% of players that know how to kill you, half your moves are useless so rely on Nair, Titls, Bait Grab, Spike and Projectiles. Also if you're being ledge trapped, immediately recover to land on the stage from the sky although you'll take a mean hit but its better then losing a stock
Not in the slightest but whatever you think bro
It takes skill no matter how low tier the character is
THANK YOU FOR LISTENING TO MY REQUEST THIS VIDEO WAS AMZING
K Rool is one of the rarest tournament characters, but one of the most common character online.
unfortunately for my friends, they are not pros (neither am I but I know more about smash characters than them) so when I go K Rool, they lose HARD.
If I don't wrong K rool was one of my first mains when I started to play ultimate
I play him almost every time.

I can feel the Duck Hunt video getting closer
i was super excited to see king k rool be invited into smash, but i never thought i would main him (Banjo Kazooie too, but nothing clicked). Him and bowser are my most satisfying heavy mains. Watching this video, i would surely play him all the time again.
*cries in king k-rool main*
K.rool is the rare occasion for when the boss is the same when you unlock him as when you fought him.
Yes, your honor, this is all correct. Unfortunately, he is the croc with a Glock. I rest my case.
Did u forget dedede was pretty high tier in brawl
Wasn't that because he was broken?
@@N.i.E.M.Ohe had a pretty good chain grab but he wasn’t broken. but regardless, he was a heavy that was high tier.
I just lost a tournament in my school with K.rool and a day later this pops up in my feed
One of the best villain ever :D
In short: people learned the boss fight.
Poetry
Definitely one of the most well designed characters in the game
100%
I’d like to add that, with his projectiles and armor, K Rool has the best neutral game of any of the heavies. Although Incin comes close. K Rool is really happy to stay in neutral and trade stray hits.
K Rool only has the best neutral of the heavies because they don’t get tools to compensate and K rool’s neutral isn’t that great either
The true answer is nobody is cool enough, except for me
I think it'd be cool if you did Meta Knight next. He is a character that has a lot of good things on paper (recovery, edge guarding, combos, frame data, straightforward neutral, good specials, etc) but doesn't seem to have much representation.
Banger vid 🔥

Well…
DO IT AGAIN
K rool is surprising technical at high level.
He has alot of gimicks he can get u with. But ifbu are ready it kinda dont matter
Also villager video when?
I like how the comments are just full of K rool mains lol. Me included
Or for a certain masher too XD
And me!
this is a stark contrast to my high school league where 1/5 people play k rool
I remember super early game people thought k rool was super good, then after like a year people agreed he was trash. A former pr player in my region who no longer competes actually predicted him being bad; after playing him in tournament early ult.
As a k rool main, the problem with him is that he’s essentially a one trick pony. Once you learn his gimmicks he doesn’t have much to do. I think nintendo should’ve reduced the end lag for a some of his attacks and he’d be better
No one plays k rool because they’re too much of a coward
I remember when everyone was hyping up king k rool at the beginning of smash. I used to main him at that time.
Simple solution…make tournaments for each weight class.
Good old heavy syndrome, if ur in advantage state ur top tier, any other time you're bottoms 5
True, but I’d say that, with his projectiles and armor, K Rool has the best neutral game of any of the heavies. K Rool is really happy to stay in neutral and trade stray hits
@@docpepperclassictru tru you right
I still wouldn’t agree that his weaknesses outnumber his strengths.
"smash 4 was the first time we got to see viable heavyweights"
Melee DK and Brawl DDD: am I a joke to you
The reason like K Rool most is because he's a menace when we are both off the stage. This oversized leather purse can go to the bottom of the mf bastzone just to back air or Nair you and safely go back to the ledge. If he back throws you when you play a character with a bad recovery, you can kiss your stock goodbye.
The King has lost his crown
I mean there is Lukewarm/Kirby Kid… still not a popular character but having someone push krool is pretty sick
I was at a high school only tournament with Bruho in attendance and he only lost one game 💀
You should start a “Why a NORMAL amount of people play” series
You forgot his recovery is so exploitable that Ganon Can Exploit it
The propeller? HAAAaaaa
Krool doesn't have the highest damaging throw(command grabs don't count), is olimar bthrow with blue and 3 Pikmins in grab
As someone that mains mario and dr mario I can confirm that I've beat almost every K rool main I've seen online
SO much potential though
Our favorite Heavy Zoner
Man, remember when we thought K Rool was broken? Good times
Last time I played online he was picked almost every game. This was probably last year.
Meanwhile in Elite Smash: *K-Rools every other match*
For me, I get Roy and Falco all the time
I had 4 DIFFERENT Falco players in a row before
K Rool is S tier when playing with 10 extra frames of input delay. It's much harder to whiff punish him or react to his projectiles and strong attacks. This character is perfectly designed to terrorize laggy online matches.
@@BBB-pe3ip on god you have to read his ass so hard to get a punish 💀
I still can’t believe he got nerfs at the beginning of the game because of Wi-Fi advantages, people didn’t want to get good against a low tier character.
I was called out in the first 12 seconds of the video because I didn’t spam up-b
you should make a why no one/everyone plays diddy kong
I love playing K. Rool and I would main him if you took away belly armor and his weight in exchange for not making him a heavy and big body. His moves just click with me so much. I will say that K. Rool is like Byleth in that he can punish a bad option very badly, but he’s also like Palutena in the fact that he has counterplay to borderline anything, it’s just up to the player to pick the right option at the right time. If you can, you lay waste to your opponent.
Indeed.
@@PrettyKoolCrocodile Least we have DK and Diddy!
