Thank you. You have shared with us one of the best oil painting lessons. Really appreciate that. You help me to understand and clearify many challenging topics in colours 🎉
Dianne, I am so glad to come upon your channel! I just started oil painting again after a 40-year hiatus. The best part is that I learned to oil paint from my grandmother over 45 years ago. It is soooo nostalgic to listen to your wonderful lessons and tips. Thank you so much!!!
Wow Dianne! This is amazing and by far the best explanation as far as color harmony of any particular painting is concerned! This is the most important aspect of a painting, because without color harmony the whole painting won't fall in place & come together as a whole cohesive painting! Thank you for explaining this in a simple yet effective way! I'm so glad that I have found you! YOU ARE THE BEST!!!👍💯
Once again, very informative and complete in depth of information for conceptualizing. I understand more about color theory than I thought I did. Thanks for your time
Thank you so much for answering my question! This was very helpful, especially seeing the effect of the out of tune color (the difference just choosing another hue of blue made!) it will be another helpful lens to evaluate my paintings by 🙏
This video was just what I needed. I think it solves the problem of why I often do not like my paintings. I also love the study you did for this lesson. Beautiful.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction I'm fascinated by color and all it does. I too could listen all day to you about it. I do the practice but it looks like a beginner.. which I am. :)))) I will stick with it though.
Totally makes sense!! The light has varying degrees of warmth and coolness depending on the time of the day. The 'Golden Hour' that photographers love in the later afternoon, is warm and has beautiful long shadows and contrast. Midday is probably cooler but that may depend on the season and where in the world you are. I too have looked at my (limited) paintings and wondered why they just don't gel. Now I know! Still getting my head around the cool and warm of the colours from your other video though 😉 Might need to watch that one a few times for it to sink into my head.
Monika, think about it like this: if it's cool the colors contain more blue than reds-oranges-yellows; if its warm, the colors contain more reds-oranges-yellow than blue.
Wonderful short and concise tips! My QUESTION though is how to fix mistakes. I couldn't find information on that in this youtube channel. Do you suggest scraping off paint, or covering a mistake with white and then repainting, or removing paint with a rag? What are the strategies?
Pritchetty, there is no universal answer as to how to fix mistakes. If the mistake occurs while you are painting, sometimes it is corrected by adjusting the color or shape while wet, sometimes it is best to remove it and re-work it. But after a painting is dry, you have a technical issue if you are working with oils. Since what we call mistakes vary so greatly, that's about as far as I can go with an answer.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction OK, thanks for replying. My problem is that when the paint is wet, I use a towel to remove paint I don't like. But sometimes it smudges the paint or moves it to other areas, and everything becomes brown or yucky grey. In another painting of mine, there's a patch I don't like. How should I correct it? Cover it with two layers of titanium white and then paint over it?
Hi Dianne, You really are an amazing teacher I learn so much from your videos ; I am interested in a class or full video on how to paint with oil. How literally to hold the brushes and apply the paint. Can you direct me to please. Thank you.
Lolita, I've not made a full video lesson just addressing the beginning techniques to get a new oil painter started. And I don't know off hand any UA-cam painter I trust who doesn't give formulas. I suggest you go to our channel page at ua-cam.com/users/inthestudioartinstructionvideos and watch the ones that apply to techniques. Just keep an eye on how I am holding a brush, loading it, and moving it to make it work.
Was that one of your paintings that you were daubing the new colours on top of? If so, I hope you were able to wipe them off quickly so there was no trace of them after filming because it was a beautiful, atmospheric image.
awesome suggestion for the sky. right now working on an ocean scene. sky was Ultramarine blue..did'nt look right...i have no phtalo blue so added phtalo green..just a tad and a bit of yellow ochre,,,big big difference...thx
Susan, September 24-26 this year, I'm doing a live workshop in Sautee. You can get the scoop on it at diannemize.com/study-with-dianne-in-person . By the way, there is one space left.
I Dianne. I have not been able to continue with the course; Mastering foreshortening. The program let me do 3 lessons only. I contacted your team and Ed is telling me that the program only has 3 lessons. My page profile is showing 36% progress. Thanks for your attention to this problem.
Yadira, the course Mastering Foreshortening is, indeed, composed of three lessons, as you can see in the initial description. After you have finished each lesson, it is important that you click on the button at the bottom right that says Mark Complete so that your page profile can accurately show your progress. I will be happy to meet with you on Zoom to help you with this. I believe Ed has sent you a note regarding that. Just let him know. Dianne
The demonstration on your painting made all the difference in this lesson. Thank you!
Have fun with it.

Me too. What a treasure Dianne is to so generously share her wisdom. I am also returning to painting on a canvas 48 years ago.
Another fine video, Dianne. Especially liked the pallet view within the color wheel!
Thanks, Thomas.

This tip is very helpful, and presents information we all need to remember all the time while we paint.
Play with the idea and have fun.

The moment I see an elder giving any information- I pull up a chair and get ready bc that is the best information you will find.
This comment made me smile. I suppose I am an elder, but I still feel like a teenager.
