Art history major here 🙋🏻♀️ Van Gogh was incredibly introverted and suffered from depression and other mental illness that left him feeling like he couldn’t do anything, like a “real” job. He tried to become part of the church like his father, but he wasn’t able to succeed in that either. Much of what we know about his life and thoughts come from the many many letters written between he and his brother. His brother traded and dealt in the art world which provided him decent income. He is the one who funded Vincent’s lifestyle and art career. I think Vincent wasn’t popular during his time because people were still expecting works of the wealthy and those that are more “sophisticated” if you will. Vincent’s works were too jarring, and honestly he just wasn’t an easy person to get along with. His poor life decisions and his rapidly declining mental health led to suicide attempts and an early death. I believe he could very well have made a huge impact in the art world and earned a high status had he lived longer, especially since the late 1890’s into the 1900’s brought major art movements unlike any seen before.
a beautiful part of vincent’s legacy is that plenty of people exist who are empathetic enough to see past all the shaping of him as a purely pitiful, disturbed, misunderstood tragedy, and can recognize that nuance exists. we’re more than the stigma attached to mental illness, and living with great pain doesn’t mean your life can’t also have moments of sweet tenderness, humor, inspiration, feelings of transcendence, anything. just look at what he created 🌻
The movie Loving Vincent is really good- its the one thats done all in real paintings. It gives a very deep and sympathetic look into his life, and its got a very moving soundtrack 🌈
If you ever get a chance to visit Amsterdam, there's a Van Gogh museum there! I visited with my family several years ago and we really loved it. Also that Chicago art museum is pretty solid, I feel like it's a great size - not so big it takes several visits to see it all, but big enough that you can spend more than like 1 hour there
I'm loving all the art talk on this one! I studied sculpture in university and we had a class to do figure modeling with clay. We had to draw a lot first to study the shapes and gestures of the model and then try to recreate it with clay before moving to whatever medium we wanted to work with. You need step back and look at the piece a lot to make sure your going the right direction. It's a very slow process that requires a lot of work and practice but it is so satisfying to see the shapes come to life. Anyway, sorry about the rant, I get very excited about sculpture. 😄 Like always, five stars⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thursday is my favorite day of the week and on that day I volunteer at a therapeutic riding center! (as in riding horses 🐴) Unfortunately I’m moving so I can’t continue to volunteer there ☹️ but Thursdays will continue to be my favorite day of the week!
Lol the people at our local thrift store are also wild. Whenever you go in it feels like you are walking into a local bar in a neighborhood you don't live in... even though you've been there dozens of times. Cray cray.
From what I now about vang Gogh life i know that is brother was the one that paid for is art studio and supplies he was the one that supported I'm financially, so yeah 👍 love the podcast 💕💕
I'm scared.I was laughing very hard at 'animes' and throughout the whole thrifting bin saga. Stuck with covid and the moment so the pod was extra special this week xo
I am terrified of spiders. I live with wolf spiders in my cottage every summer … always have one eye open those demons are fearless. Leigh, please come to NYC and visit the Matisse exhibit at MoMa. I think you would love his painting process and it’s all about patterns and pretty James- I feel the same way about John Meyer (the worst)
I just assume that the Van Gogh thing is for people who aren't really into art ... so very very entry level. I think it is sad that looking at his work is not enough, and they have to animate it to make it more 'exciting'.
My fav day of the week is any day I don’t have to do my corporate job or when I get to go thrifting or make art! I also went to the same exhibit here in australia and so many people were crammed in one room so you could barely see anything 😂 I also agree the whole thing was weird.
We got invited to go to the van gogh traveling exhibit and I was pretty sure that it would be exactly the things you mentioned, I'm kinda glad we didn't go after having my suspicions confirmed haha. I can understand someone who isn't really into art enjoying it and thinking it's cool but we definitely felt like it would have cash grab vibes to us
I was terrified when James did arrrrh 🤣 yes I love horrors thrillers. Vangaugh brother Theodore supported him lot. His sister in law pulished a book about Vangaugh. I love Mondays because it's the beginning of a new week and also I get the Yeah Maybe Podcast😋 animals can have off days like we do my cat told me 🤭 thanks for sharing your awesome podcast 💚💕💚
Ok THE HULK (Leigh) if someone were to make an art show like the van gogh experience of you and your art, what would you want it to look like? Also, loved this episode top 3 for sure!
I also love art for looking and enjoying so modern art is a little meh for me as well. Also glad you brought up the cost of works. Unfortunately, it had nothing to do with how great the work is, more so that it’s a game between wealthy people wanting the rare piece just to brag and sell it later or keep it hidden. Luckily once a museum has it, it is now public for all to enjoy.
Pit: No P on the Pod but bad things be happening and its bumming me out and I keep doom scrolling. Peak: Had a movie night with my bf and I'm going to a Pride Festival today with friends, but honestly because of recent events I don't feel like it's going to be a good time.
The scariest thing is probably how they scammed people with the van gogh exhibit 🤔 Also, I think you guys would enjoy this artist named Laufey, she made a song called Fragile which I think Leigh will like the vibe, and James will like her voice uwu Lastly, my fave day is monday coz...well, you know why 👀👀👀

That’s interesting to hear! Crazy to think what would have happened if he lived longer.

I’ve always disliked those exhibitions but couldn’t articulate why but you guys perfectly articulated it ✌🏻✨

I think you two should answer some questions from the Were Not Really Strangers game/card deck!! They’re great conversation starters
We have played! Would be fun on the podcast though!

Definitely a classic!!
Another movie based on Van Gogh is called At Eternity’s Gate. It’s a very moving/emotional film. I would recommend giving it a watch.
Will look into it 😌

The Van Gogh experience I went to only had the info room and the projection room lol

That would make sense that it’s very entry level.

Slightly concerned that James doesn’t like John Mayer (an icon), but I still give five stars for this pod. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
😮💨 thanks for the five stars still!
