Third is such a unique vibe. Great songs played by a band that is dissolving. You can sense how defeated they must have felt when you listen to the album. A singular experience and one of my favorite albums.
I do love Big Star & enjoyed the overview. Two other live collections worth checking out: 1) Nobody Can Dance combining NY studio rehearsals w/ a 1974 Memphis show (Lightman on bass) & 2) Live @ Lafayette’s Music Room on Omnivore from a Jan 1973 Memphis show w/ Hummel on bass. This last one may be my favorite.
Not sure if anybody mentioned this: a fourth album was released before Chilton's untimely death. In space likely #4 whereas best has gotta be the second one though it's close (debut).
Great band and collection. I have most of these cds too and the Chilton book and a Big Star book. Here’s my ranking and by the way In Space came out in 2005 not 1994, I remember it well because I bought it the day it was released and unlike most people, i like it. 1. No. 1 Record (1972) 2. Radio City (1974) 3. In Space (2005) 4. Sister Lovers (1978) I just can’t get into a lot of Sister Lovers. Especially all the downbeat songs. It’s ok but I only really like 4 or 5 songs
Thanks Mike! I knew nothing about Big Star In Space at all... I do want to check it out. One thing I would like to ask... if you happen to know. Did they ever play live with Chris Bell at all? If they did I've never heard a recording. You would have thought they would have played live to promote #1 Record at the beginning. I have to get the outtakes album. Big Star and Badfinger had such sad stories but for different reasons.

As I seem to recall, they probably never played with Bell outside of Memphis. It was a promotion disaster! Thanks for commenting.
Don’t sleep on In Space. It’s a very good album. I can do without Love Revolution but most of the rest is first rate. I recommend it.
I saw Big Star reform with Auer and Stringfellow at the Fillmore - San Francisco in June of 1994. Great video/tribute to the band
Thanks friend!
