I’m going to buy your book really have learned a lot.
I've been self-taught for about a year. I didn't start taking the barre chords serious until a few months ago and still have a hard time with them. I tried this technique and instantly noticed a difference and improvement without my hand cramping up.
Glad to hear it Randy! Thanks for commenting and watching! :)
@@rickysguitar Same thing with me, i´m self taught and can not believe that this advice from you, nobody is mentioning this simple method here. It´s such a golden advice most people i know, quit after their failed barre chord experience, cause of that! Ricky you´re just that type of teacher with such a loaded fun humor from heart, makes learning just a fun experience. That type of teacher i wished i had at school back then. Please keep it up, we need more of these videos from you, so people will understand and feel the guitar from heart like you do. Cheers mate!
I’ve been playing for a long time and while I can play barre chords, I’m mostly a finger stylist and I love open chords with sus notes - so I mostly avoid barre chords (unless there isn’t a real option). But handy tips like these actually make a difference - even to me, after all these years. I tend to barre reluctantly, so my index finger goes on last - and I always thought I was “doing it wrong”!
Ricky, just now seeing this video. I think you are "spot on" with these tips. Thanks.
So simple, yet so powerful.
It is isn't it! It's all about working with your hands and not against them
I think this method is great and makes the most sense.
This is a great lesson. I've been struggling with bar chords for a long time. This helped immensely. Thank you!
That is one tip I will never forget. Much appreciated!!!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching! :)
Thank you for this! I’ve always struggled with barre cords and moving them.
Great advice brother! I fear the Barre cords! This is much better! Thank you!
Thank you for making this Great lesson for us Ricky.
Thak you for watching :)
Thanks for this Ricky, I've been playing barre chords this way for 30 + years and never even considered that it suddenly got easier as I'd ditched 1st finger down first after just a few weeks of playing . I'm amazed at the amount of beginning guitarists that give up trying to play barre chords altogether . As a not technical (sloppy) guitarist, I now realize that my advice to stick with it because "If I can do it anyone can " obviously isn't helping . From today I'll will be passing on this tip and sharing the video with anyone who is stuck .
It took me almost ten years to know the method you are demonstrating in this Video now. Todays students are very fortunate because these fundamentals are now available in the internet. Thank you
That was a fantastic lesson, your such a wonderful teacher. Thanks a million.
Thank you for your kind words Wayne 😊
Finally I find something that actually works. I'm working on the CAGED system. Moving the shapes around the fretboard is killing me. I just tried your little trick here and it opened up a whole new level. Thank you so much.
So smart. Big help. Thanks!
Exactly what my teacher taught me... I've only heard this from him and you 👌🏻
Thanks for the reminder
Rick you're a miracle worker...God bless you!!!
I very struggled with this ...for. a . year 😆 thank you for giving me a new 🔑
Eyup Tim! Brilliant! That's why I made the video. I appreciate the comment :)
@@rickysguitar haaaa its so awesome.....ok im a newbie....so this is an enlightening moment for me
Awesome! Thanks Ricky
Thanks for this, I need all the motivation in the world to practice at the moment. Hoping to get back to lessons with you guys soon when I have more time. 👍🏻
Who dis? You're welcome! Hope to see you soon....
Pure genius!
easy and wonderful advise!
Many thanks. Very helpful.
Brilliant thanks
Ricky Is the best guitar teacher
Thanks Ricky
I’ve been trying to teach myself guitar since the beginning of the pandemic… barre chords have always eluded me due to my non dominant fingers not being able to move as well with the damn barre down FIRST!…. Of course it makes perfect sense to put the barre down afterwards… it just took Ricky to point it out!… thanks mate!… I’m in my music room 2 minutes after watching this video and it’s already sounding better!
Super stoked Dan!
Thank you Ricky, this finally helps me to faster change Barre Chords 👍
Your lessons are awesome! 😎 Thanks!
I’m going to give it a try.
Your absolutely right!!!!
I know!!
Thank you Ricky, I didn't know about that scout thing. Makes a lot of sense. Thanks again, great video.
Eyup Bob! It's like walking in the forest. You've got to look where you plant your feet otherwise you'll be on your butt before you know it!
Good idea! Thanks.
Thanks Ricky!
You got the best Vids around, Mate!
Have a Great Day Brother!
Thanks
Thank you Master much respect for this info worth more than GOLD
I stumbled upon this method when I was learning barre chords, but I didn't think to use the middle finger as a scout. That would be a lot easier. Putting your third finger down first for five string barres is brilliant! It makes so much sense!
It's why I keep making videos Rollo! You don't know what you don't know! The scout finger is super important!
Thank you Ricky, I will do this 👍
Make sure you do and let me know how it goes.
Thanks for the lesson Ricky. I can get my fingers in place comfortably now but I'm still struggling to get the pressure right to make the strings ring out properly. Some progress at least!
Are you using an acoustic or electric? Is your action too high (distance of the strings from the fretboard). What gauge are your strings? 9's on an electric and 10's on an acoustic will do the job!
@@rickysguitar I'm using an electric, the action does seem a bit high so I'll adjust that and see where I get! I think my guitar came with 9's (only got it a couple of months ago) but I'll try changing them as well if the action change doesn't work. Thanks for the tips!
I think this is going to really pay off, thank you!
Good advice I have had trouble with barre chords
true, your are amazing in teaching mate!
Thank you for your kind words :)
Make C shape then barre, A shape barre, G shape barre, E shape barre, D shape barre, Nice. The Caged system is the biggest shortcut to leaning chords on the guitar. Thanks for the instructions.
Thanks I'll start practicing this way!!
Useful stuff...cheers Ricky
this is an amazing video and technique. subscribed
Thank you
Thanks Ricky 😎👍
Right on
Ricky, great lesson as always. I think you covered this elsewhere, you should also mention - where to position the thumb to make the barre chord strong.
Awesome video..
Thanks pal I can now play barre chords still need practice to make them sweet but I can get them down now
yep!
Simple but effective
One thing I can add after much trial and error that I think would have helped me a bunch had I known from the start: it's good to try to get the form exactly correct and build the muscle memory - but don't *obsess* over that...try playing the chord as downstrums and upstrums as soon as you get reasonably ok with forming it... Reason: in *practice* - played at speed - you are usually strumming some portion of the chord...a lot of times the lower (bass) portion on the downstrum and catching the higher strings as you strum back up thru them... so you don't have to have a perfectly formed full chord every time...fragments work a LOT of the time. Experiment and see how things sound !
I thought my hand is weak or I just suck but I see it is because of the way I do them great video mate
Thank you sir
You're welcome David!
Stellar lesson as always, Ricky. Good to see you again mate! Hope you are doing well!
Thank you for your kind words. I'm superb thank you :)
I find that works, what I get confused about ALOT and can’t get is some Barr chords are E shape some r another for some reason I can’t get to naolil. That in my head, one shape may B major one shape may b minor.I get whet the barre starts what root but it’s the shape mad but true I will get it one day love ya lessons always have so cheers
Awesome
🤯🤯🤯 thanks for that!!!🎸🎸💥💥
Love the emojis Carl! thanks for watching :)
Nice!!!
I had to learn this myself recently. Still having a little difficulty, but I think the action on my acoustic is a little high.
A well setup guitar can make all the difference in your progress! Try using lighter gauge strings too!
Yep
It worked 👍
I've been playing for over 15 years and I can't really feel a difference...However as a teacher i'm always interested in trying different methods with students. I'm gonna try teaching my students this and see if it helps.
It’s a godsend! I taught this to a guitar class 20 years ago. 10 out of 12 students got it straight away! I panicked because I hadn’t factored it into my lesson plan but luckily I always over prepare and had a contingency lol! It drills in the importance of the E shape in the CAGED system too! I’ll never look back at barre first approaches. And yes! We always have to maintain that beginners mind and feel so we can explain in context to their challenges. That’s why feeling it would be missing from your experience because it’s already a skill set you have. Try it with a lefty guitar if you want to understand the beginners struggle!
@@rickysguitar thanks for the advice! You're a cool dude RIcky!
The main problem I have with the 'single finger' A shape is that the top segment of my ring finger (a) is fairly long, and (b) will not bend back too far. The result is that the high E string is fretted by that finger (rather than by the barring index finger), giving an A6 shape (which I don't want) or, at best, muting the string. And due to my rather wide spatulate fingertips, I can't squeeze a three finger A shape in any higher than the 2nd fret, either.
Thank youuuuuu
oh my God! i tried it and
I'm instantly Better ..
what kind of marvelous witchcraft is this
The best kind of witchcraft!
Screw the Barre Chord! What did it for me, was the term "Scout Finger"! Never thought of it that way! That alone, was a game changer for me! Like/Subscribe/Bell
Hi Ricky, just watched your latest episode and I love your enthusiasm as a teacher. Forgive me for being a bit dim, but do you have a course for a 70 year old complete newbie who has just bought his first ever guitar - a Fender Strat? Yes, I've subscribed to your channel.
Eyup Bob! I'm planning on releasing a course or 2 in 2022! Thanks for subscribing my friend :)
@@rickysguitar many thanks Ricky. Looking forward to it!
Hey Bob, I'm 66 and just bought a new Stratocaster good luck my friend.
I think this is a good approach in general but my issue is the initial placement of the other 3 fingers so applying the barre last sounds good but we have to find a way to train the finger placements before the barre.
It’s only 3 steps Nick:
1: Scout with the middle finger
2: Apply the shape (E or A)
3: Apply the barre.
Apply steps 1 and 2 until it feels natural watching and feeling every part of the process with absolute intent and purpose.
Heck Yea..
Yes, I was taught that the "approved" method was to put the barre on first, then get the shape. Result: I always struggled to get barre chords cleanly...I'm now trying things the other way round...it's taking a long time to "unlearn" the old method, though...
You've got to work with your hands! Do you perchance know Mary Hinge?
@@rickysguitar Yes, I know Mary. I'm also close personal friends with Billy Sugger! 🤣
Hi Ricky, Still struggling with barre chords, my first finger is letting me down, I cant ring the fifth string, also my hand is strained and protruded, causing said strain. My guitars (electric & acoustic) are low action with 9 gage steel strings. I must be holding the neck wrong as to make the chord at all my first finger is on its side (not flat). Any advise ? cheers.
Eyup buddy! Are you in my Facebook group? I'm going live in there tonight 5pm UK time. I'll be doing a Q and A at the end of todays guitar lesson. Here's the link facebook.com/groups/rickysguitar
Can you play our bar chords above the 12 fret . If so how( the 12 13 14 fret and so on).
Theoretically yes. Practically it gets super hard as there’s less space to make efficient chord grips. Despite that it’s good to be able to see where those chords are for using them for triads or soloing
Thank you, for replying
Should chords be played above the 12 fret? If so, which kind of chords -triads? Then what about the caged system about the 12 fret?
Lastly thank you for your videos!
You do a great job!
@@rickysguitar
Are you from Hull?
“Dial on your phone”😂😂😂😂😂
Barre chords are only correct when the guitar is set up and the neck is straight .. I get guilty of neglect after a few string changes myself .. But I believe its Fender Strat spec 1/16 @ 17th fret works for me ..Super important or youre wasting your time really trying to Boogie with a garbage picked set-up ..... Sure you can still do Barre shapes but the instrument no where near its tactile potential chording........... Detroit,Michigan USA
👍
With this way you play “lighter”, without using too much force. I learned the wrong way and it took me years to unlearn “The Grip of Death”.
If you ever come across a guitar with serious fingerdents on it…
Always play with the minimum amount of pressure needed to produce a good clear sound Seppo.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👌🏻🙏😄
🏁👍
Excuse me, I type with two fingers…one from each hand!🤪
I think the problem is that British men just can't wait to get to the bar 🤣
Hahaha! There's something in that!
I think I could play better if I had an English accent.
😆
Barre chords are NOT easy it takes months to perfect and a lot of pain your dreaming mate
That's your experience. I taught thousands of people over 30+ years and I've seen massive success with this method. Sometimes instantly.
Thanks Ricky
