Heart of Ice is an episode of the first season of Batman: The Animated Series. It introduces the iconic villain Mister Freeze and revamps the origins of the character completely, giving him a dark and tragic background, which was later adapted into the comic book versions of the character. This is also the first episode of the show to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program. Heart of Ice was the 14th produced episode and the third episode aired.

They should cast Billy Zane as Mr Freeze in live action the voice and the bald head are on point.
This is my favourite representation of Mr Freeze and made him my favourite villain. Unfortunately most other representations of him are awful.
I mean, even Arnold Schwarzenegger's version is one of the better ones.

Batman beyond. Loved this series!
Terry sympathized with Freeze more than Bruce was ever able to. They both had the same beginning, basically, with a corrupt corporate executive causing the death of someone they loved and both being driven down the path of revenge. Terry simply had the luck to stumble upon the best possible mentor, while Victor walked his path alone.

@@harrissyed1417 that too.
There's a reason why I did an entire college paper based on this episode, the animation, writing, and character are pitch perfect, and it would be a crime not to discuss it in this setting. I got an A.

You should post that
I’d read it
“In my nightmares, I see my Nora reaching out behind the glass, begging to me with frozen eyes. How I have longed to see that look upon your face, Boyle!”
The Animated Series took a HUGE risk in being so serious, intellectual, emotional, and psychological. It respected the intelligence of its audience and refused to be just another "kid's show" like the Challenge of the Superfriends. In being so bold, it changed the history of animation.
Let's not forget, this episode paved the way for the Mr Freeze fight in Arkham City, one of the best boss fights in the history of video games.
This episode needs no introduction. This took a character and reincarnated him as a version that every basis there design on. Mr. Freeze is my favorite Batman villain because he is not always a villain. Just a man who loves his wife.
Arkham games did him good hell do villain things but its from his point of good for his wife. In knight he's a good guy well maybe a non bad guy lol
Batman & Mr Freeze: Sub-Zero is how you do Mr Freeze right in a movie
I will always standby the fact if Batman and Robin was done more seriously, schwarzenegger would have been a good choice for Freeze. As reference, I always look at his last scene with john conner at the end of T2, especially the line "I know know why you cry, but it is something I can never do"
Yeah, the whole movie was bad for a lot of reasons. Arnold wasn't a bad choice at all. How they used and directed him in the film was terrible though.
I disagree only because Schwarzenegger's build and delivery make him come off as a badass rather than Freeze's cold, precise bitterness. A good script and direction could have worked, sure, but I feel like it would still be working against his strengths.
@@AubriGryphon IDK, I think he could've pulled it off. I mean, considering how good a job he did playing the terminator (that sort of mechanical emotionlessness is suprisungly difficult to perform, since you need to suppress your natural inflection and body language), he could've been amazing as Mr. Freeze.
I thought Batman & Robin was a good movie IMO.
@@natesmodelsdoodles5403I mean, imagine all of Mr. Freeze's lines from Batman TAS with the cold and emotionless voice of the Terminator, with obvious despair thrown in.
I always appreciated the fact that many of Batman's villains were a twisted reflection of his character.
A lot of batman villains are just batman on a bad day. They are relatable. Harvey dent is a good guy till his accident. Penguin never felt accepted. Always being made fun of.
Ideally, that's how villains should work. Imagine if the Joker was made into a Green Lantern villain instead. He wouldn't be iconic at all.
@Tin Watchman There are definitely Joker-like villains such as Green Goblin. But imagine if Batman & Spider-Man traded archenemies. I'm sure it could work w/ good writing, but the question is which dynamic would fit better? I reckon that Wilson Fisk could also be an iconic Batman villain, just as Bane could be for Spidey as well. But Joker & GG have aspects to them that are tailor-made for their respective nemeses.
BTAS has to this day, the best voice actor for Mr. Freeze.
Rest in peace, Mr. Freeze.
"Good night...humanitarian."
Still the milestone it rightfully is, this one was so good they modeled Freeze on this version ever since.
Mark Hamill's first real voice role here, which convinced the Producers to make him Joker.
A good enough story you don't even pick up on the gags in the script, like how there's a Heat Wave going on in Gotham during Freeze's crimes and how Freeze's enemy is "Boyle" in opposition to him.
I do wish that video wasn't edited the way it is though, that was a lazy mistake.
Which video? The one we're watching or the one in the episode?
@@terryli6353 Yes, the security video Batman watches of Freeze's accident. I mean, even Timm and Dini admitted it in the commentary
It's amazing that this 22 minute animated episode handled a villain's backstory with so much more grace and dignity than a live action film that was roughly 2 hours long❄
The man who SHOULD have played on-screen Mr. Freeze: Patrick Stewart.
The man who should now: Ralph Fiennes
I'm not sure I see it. I mean, Patrick Stewart could pull it off because he's awesome. He just doesn't jump out at me.
Jason Statham is my top choice!!

Heart of Ice has aged like a fine wine....
Yes we’re finally at the episode that turned a D list villain into a A tier villain
I felt the same way about the episode “Mad as a Hatter,” just without too much sympathy.
Titanguy how was mad hatter in the original comics I know him as a twisted freak who kidnaps girls and dresses them up like Alice and hypnotizes people
In the early years, he was just a one-note villain who was way into hats.
I've been waiting for this. Hands down one of my favorite episodes. When a show can get the viewer to care not only about the protagonist but also the antagonist, you're doing something right. It's also truly amazing that the rewrite they gave Mr. Freeze in this show has since made it's way into comic book canon. That along with Harley really shows the level of impact BTAS had. It's all awesome. I guess you could say Heart of Ice melted my heart.
I have a pitch in mind for how Mr Freeze could be adapt in the movies, specifically the Matt Reeves Batman franchise :
In the Sequel for The Batman, the plot could have Mr Freeze as the main villain, and involve Batman investigating some attacks at chemicals factories. Right from the beginning, Freeze would come out as ruthless and cold (no pun intented) man, who doesn't care about others, including the lifes of his own men, doing whatever it takes to achive his goal.
The movie would also have a sub plot involving Batman adopting Dick Grayson, which leads to the boy eventually discovering his secret identity. This would result in Batman's personal dillema in the movie : If he should let Dick be his partner or not?
Eventually, Bruce allows Dick to join him in his crusade against crime, and the boy end up not only working as positive influence for the dark knight, but helps him realize that Mr Freeze is not stealing chemical products because he wants revenge on someone, but because he's trying to find a cure for a disease.
This all build up to the big revealation about Freeze's past, that he's just a broken man who's trying to save his wife. This would serve to to create juxtaposition between Batman and Freeze. While Batman, despite starting out as loner because of the lost of his parents regains his humanity thanks to Dick, Freeze on the other hand lost his compassion towards others due to his accident and his wife condition.
However, his attempts to save Nora would fail, causing to become more desperate than ever, to the point he would decide to capture one innocent, planning to transplant his organs to save his wife (similar to Batman Sub zero). Batman and Robin would be able to stop him and defeat Freeze, and the hero, in his identity of Bruce Wayne, with the resources of his company, would be able to cure Freeze's wife.
Definitely one of the best episodes! It’s like I can actually feel his pain and emotions!

What killed the franchise? Joel Schumacher!
@@mrteacher359 Actually, the reason why Batman and Robin failed isn't actually Joel Schumacher's fault. The movie was originally intended to be darker like the Tim Burton movie but the WB executives thinking that the lighthearted tone can be a great idea to sell toys for kids. This is my favourite villian he’s not bad cause he’s evil he’s bad cause he only cares about one thing... his wife also I so want a good live action movie with him in
And cast Patrick Stewart as Mister Freeze. Can’t think of anyone else who could do him justice.
Zach Scarbrough or David tennant as a darker version of the character
What did you think of the version of him on GOTHAM? Or how he changed for the New Batman Adventures?
Louis Duarte I still like him if you watch the bts of mr freeze it explains why he change so much ua-cam.com/video/o4SvoTQFq1o/v-deo.html this is the mr freeze bts
Not only because of that, but because he honestly has been screwed by life. He's betrayed by the company he worked for and all this while trying to find a cure. If there is anybody who deserves of Vengeance type of story it's mr. Freeze. It goes even further into another animated movie that he's in where he finds Redemption in a woman that he loves and then that woman betrays him and the company that he's helping to assist to find a cure for another disease.
"I can't imagine anyone else saying these beautiful, poetic lines..."
Patrick Stewart
I mean, tell me I'm not the only one who saw this episode and immediately did not want Sir Patrick to play the character in a live-action capacity.
Then we got... well, what we got instead :/
I feel like Bryan Cranston could do the role justice in live action as well.
Justin Clowater Look I don’t have anything against Cranston. But I think that Mr.Freeze is deserving of a true Shakespearean actor like sir Patrick Stewart.
@@zachscarbrough2727 If we were making the movie 20 years ago, yes. I feel like Stewart's a bit too old for it now. He absolutely would have been the best choice in 1997, but I'm talking about if they were to make it now.
Stewart was actually considered for Freeze at one point.
Alan rickman could become mr freeze, especially his deep stoic voice and acting as severus snape. RIP
Arguably the best episode in the entire series.
Fun Fact: Michael Ansara was married for almost 20 years to Barbra Eden from I Dream of Jeannie.
What kills me about this episode is that Victor Fries *LOVES* Nora, he loves his wife more than anything. They convey his undying, unwavering, passionate love in a way that I have never seen before or since. His love for her is what makes this episode truly memorable because the weight of his broken heart permeates all around him.
Even in Batman beyond he's badass.
BLLLLIIIIIIGGGGGHHHHTTTTT!!!!

The scene where he kills that female scientist is so satisfying
@@deadaccount8054 "Remember, there might be some momentary discomfort."
That scene made me tear up when I first saw it!
That episode works in two ways
1. It finally gives closure to Freeze, his final chance at happiness, redemption and beating his suicidal depression are lost as he is betrayed and used by people he thought he could trust
2. Highlights the difference between Terry and Bruce. Bruce is a Batman who uses his brain whilst Terry is a Batman who uses his heart
3:11 Well, maybe Maurice Lemarche, who voiced Freeze in the Batman Arkham video games.
The Harley Quinn series took his character fairly serious and I think gave him a great conclusion. One of my favorite episodes was his.
This episode always brought me to tears.
And in one episode of an animated show, the characterization of Mr Freeze would be changed forever.
It's the slight accent in Ansara's voice that really makes this Fries feel legit to the character. The dry apathetic and disassociated delivery is just perfection.
For a while, I regarded this episode as ONE of the best.
But after many rewatches and consideration of just how influential it was and just how well done it is on the writing, animation, voice acting, music, etc, I have changed my mind.
Now, it ranks as my absolute favourite episode of the series.
And I'm likely not alone.
Anyone else who has this as their favorite episode, let me know.
The Mister Freeze I favored:

• Batman: Arkham City

He was really good in the recent Harley quin episodes you should check those out.
the first 2 Arkham games in generall seem like a continuation of the animated series

@@nudl3Zz That's probably because it was written by Paul Dini and reprised the roles of many of TAS voice actors.
My favorite is the Harley Quinn series version.
Best rendition of a tragic villain ever
His final fate is rather sad for this series as he dies in Batman Beyond with only Terry believing in him having some good and chance of redemption during his final moments of life.
@himode It is even sadder when you learn Nora is cured in Batman Beyond but Freeze is still too guilt driven to meet her.
BAT CREDIT CARD!!
Mr Freeze was done so right in Batman TAS and even in Batman Beyond, just a perfect character. I really hope he gets another chance some day in a cinematic version of the Batman movies.
Spectrum was this shows best animation studio (sorry TMS). That opening shot tracking around the ballerina while she's also spinning in space culminating with a painted background of Freeze and his bright read animated eyes popping open *chefs kiss*
God, the DCAU was the best. I _love_ how they finally sent out this character in Batman Beyond:
Batman: "But you'll die."
Freeze: "Believe me, you're the only one who cares."
I had no idea about the mad scientist influences. I can totally see how they were inspired by Karloff.
I remember having this episode on tape and would watch it over and over again. Its why Dr. Freeze is my favorite villain. I could watch the episode over and over again a million more times.
The fact that later on there are moments of bonding over there lost loved ones. After the fighting is over they understand and can even feel for the other. The comic panel where freeze is just looking at his wife's grave, batman standing back letting him in respect. The final line of she always loved it when it snowed I just wanted her to smile, I know victor but come along. The understanding and empathy these two have makes it wonderful and shows not all villains are bad people some have just been pushed to a place there is no way back from.
I wonder how Batman and Robin would have turned out, had Patrick Stewart gotten the role of Mister Freeze.
He was in talks to be cast too, ya know.
Mr Freeze is still by far my most favorite villain beside the Joker in batman. He is smart, he is cunning and his story is very driven. Love his fight in Batman Arkam as well.
“Like we’d get anywhere near Anthony Hopkins.”
Something tells me that everyone feels that way about him.
The best villains, always have a very tragic backstory. When you see what happens to doctor freeze in Batman beyond, it really made me feel the upmost sympathy for the character.
I fucking love his voice i think it was just perfect
When Batman says “Goodnight Humanitarian” to Boyle you can just hear both the contempt and disgust in his voice, as if the idea of saving him just pisses him off.
They practically recreated this episode for the Mr Freeze DLC in Batman Arkham Origins
The one we've all been waiting for... This episode is Batman: The Animated Series imo, everything that made Batman: The Animated Series such a phenomenal TV show all wrapped into a single, emotionally complex package.
This is easily one of the best reviews I have ever seen. Short, to the point, and about an episode I remember dearly. +1
I love that this was the longest one. Thank you
This is probably one of my favorite episodes text you almost got him and a the judgement about the judge and his mysterious identity I also hope when you get to the mad as a Hatter story talk about how wonderful Roddy McDowall was but I digress Heart of Ice is probably one of the best episodes of the Batman animated series I love what they did with mr. Freeze and even in later episodes what they do and even in Batman Beyond so sad so haunting so beautiful all-in-one meet little package somewhere warm hand waits for mine that is just so sad Batman tries to help him as best you can but knows it's somewhere cold breeze blows for that house
A perfect Batman episode of how to create Mr. Freeze as a superior vengeful villian and it worked so well. Give credit to Paul Dini, who made fewer episodes throughout the series and hes the voice of making Batman villians into a complex stories. I watched it and have to say, it was perfect, emotional, suspenseful, and very original. It felt watching Mr. Freeze's own story of planning to face vengeance against the accused humanitarian and Batman must confront him before making people into a Sub Zero doom. The creators did an excellent job of making a good Mr. Freeze episode and even the commentary just influence and Paul Dini's own writing script of creating a lost doctor who wanted to save his wife and getting mad for what he wanted to do. Watch this episode people, this is indeed the best Batman episode ever.
Cool episode!
let's face it, THIS is one of, if not THE, episode to make this series a beloved classic
A absolute classic, my only wish is only that something more original could be done again. Utter masterpiece.
The ending always makes me cry
I remember as a kid, this was THE episode that got me hooked on the series.
I dont think I had ever witnessed a cartoon show that went as deep into a baddie's backstory as this one did.
I loved how at the end Batman scornfully says to Boyle, "Good Night...Humanitarian."
This was a classic episode. I really loved this one. Easily in the top 5 the series.
I truly wish victor i could give you peace but i can only give you justice. I'm sorry victor

I have been waiting all month for your discussion of this episode, and it, much like the episode itself, does not disappoint. This was the perfect origin episode, mainly because it took a goofy, underplayed character and made him into a sympathetic, yet frightening one. I was always a fan of Mister Freeze, and knowing how much his character has changed over the years made it all the better. Although there have been plenty of other performance as the character, this will always be the definitive one in my eyes
This is the first episode of the show I ever saw. It aired on a small-town TV station we got on cable. Thanks for posting this.
"leave him"
"But!?"
"He shouldn't have gotten in the way."
God tier episode
I'll be honest, I watched this show as a kid but for whatever reason none of it stuck in my memory with the exception of this episode. So, for someone like myself, whom this show never connected with, to remember it so well even after so many years really does mean this one is something special.
It should always be mentioned when talking of the animated series, completely agree. It reinvents a villain perfectly, also. Batman staring at him in Arkham while he holds a figurine of Nora is perfect. I'd love to read the script to this episode. It's perfection in Storytelling. Loving this series, Channel Awesome. TAS is the best nostalgic series
This episode with Mr. Freeze will bring you to tears...
One thing people keep overlooking but it's a stroke of brilliance, has ANYONE noticed?!?!
Mr Freeze, is the one claiming he has no emotions. But is clearly driven purely by emotion.
Boyle how-ever, his target. Is the one claiming he has lots of emotions, he even gets a humanitarian award in the show, which is the irony. He maintains that image of being the emotional empathetic one. But is SOLELY driven by money greed, and has no emotions (Other than fear by the end.)
So it actually flips around, and proves that the title. "Heart of Ice." most likely refers to Boyle and NOT Mr Freeze, as Boyle through all of his actions and decisions truly does seem to have a heart of ice.
What a nice episode. It's got a chilling story.
I've gotta say, the episodes with Mr. Freeze were some of the BEST BTAS episodes in a show that was great throughout its run!
If you want a pretty solid live-action Mr. Freeze, they did a pretty good job with him in “Gotham”
From D lister to the A-team of bat villains. I love the legacy of this Dini story and freeze's appearances in the Arkham games is pretty decent too
Here's another fun fact: Bruce Timm and Andrea Romano (voice director) were both present for Ansara's first voice sessions. They had to keep telling him, "That was good, but do another take with less emotion." After another take or two, "Even less."
I am REALLY loving Bat-May...but I wish y'all would have made these videos more along the lengths of 15-20 minutes instead of the 5-8 minute vignettes/snippets. This Batman series was PERFECT, and your commentary of these episodes is a perfect marriage in this format. Batman: TAS was SUCH a *MASTERPIECE*, and your Bat-May videos are SO well done that I could seriously binge watch these all day.
I really enjoy this channel and the personality each of y'all brings to the projects you work on. I do hope that y'all will consider expanding Bat-May to fill out reviews of each episode. (Or at least of those really GOOD episodes such as *Heart of Ice* ). 💙
The other really good thing is that the snow is drawn in as part of the scene, not just a falling snow pattern across the front of the scene. The detail is awesome! I love this episode so much.
6:23 Thanks, Alfred. My cold is now hot. You’re the best butler there is.
This was the very first "B:TAS" episode I ever saw, and for a while I believed this to be the first episode created. It's hard for me to explain the effect it had on me. At the time I was tuning in more out of curiosity than anything else, little imagining that this would become one of my all-time favorite shows. I was still a fan of both the semi-humorous Adam West TV series and the Tim Burton films, the latter of which were certainly serious in tone but still placed more of an emphasis on action than making us sympathize with the characters. So I was not prepared for Mr. Freeze to inspire emotions in me more complex than the Penguin or Catwoman had in BATMAN RETURNS. I remember mostly laughing at the Penguin and only slightly fearing Catwoman, but I was profoundly afraid of Mr. Freeze and never laughed at him at all! At the same time, I could also feel compassion for Freeze because he was not as cruel as the Penguin and had a much more compelling motive for revenge than did Catwoman. I don't think I had ever encountered a fictional character quite like Freeze up to that point, and at the time I could not possibly have known that future episodes of this series would leave even more indelible impressions on me. I did not exactly like "Heart of Ice" the first time I saw it, but the story did a very good job of sticking in my head afterward.
Four episodes later, we'll get the team up we never asked for, but will be so damn thankful for
Wow mr. Freeze is mr. Freeze. Great detective work, batman
This episode is why I love mister freeze and it expanded my mind to how villain can be complex. Don't forget batman subzero
I feel like Patrick Stewart would make a wonderful Mr. Freeze. Whether voicing him or acting in live action, he actually bears a more than passing resemblance.
Arguably, the series' most iconic episode.
One of the best episodes next to the forgotten.
