RIP Willis Reed! My sister Dee Dee loved him and he always was her hero. She was a big knicks fan and I learned about them because of her. I was 11 when the knicks won their first championship and Reed made his inspiring entrance at MSG. I’ll never forget the joy my sister had when they won. Frazier had a spectacular. game! Barnett, Brady and DeBrusser were all amazing. The Jets and the Mets also had won championships. What a glorious time for New York!!!

Just got the news of Reed's passing, wow. Just to put into context what a different time that was, I was born and raised in New York City, lived in Harlem until I was 14. I was a freshman an New York University at the time. The previous year, the Mets had won it all (after 6 seasons finishing last, then one of NEXT to last after being formed in 1962, around the time I became interested in baseball). I was playing in a chess league that night (stop that snickering, lol) when the game started, but there was a "saving grace" aspect to that: I couldn't watch it live anyway (attending the game live was WAY beyond my meager allowance, lol), because the game was on tape delay. Think about that: Game 7, of the NBA Finals, between the two largest cities in the country...and the game was on tape delay. I'd say the NBA has come a long way. The chess game was long, as they sometimes are, and I went to the bathroom 2 or 3 times. Each time I went, I plugged my ears and went "la, la, la" because I could see people in the hallways listening to flimsy transistor radios, obviously listening to the game, and I didn't wanna hear ANYTHING that was happening, obviously. I won my game, took my ass back to the dorm (even though I lived in the Bronx, I had gotten a full scholarship that included room and board at "The Brittany" a boy's dorm located at 55 East 10th Street. When the showed Willis walk almost casually onto the court, well, you see the reaction. If I live to 2070, I don't think I'll forget that. R.I.P. Willis.

At one point, with no action on the baseball field, the crowd erupted in a loud ovation. I had no idea what it was about and my dad began to scream. He didn’t last through the game, but what a psychological lift that gave the team. Are used to go to Nick games in that time period, and the playoff tickets were $6.50 in the Promenade or mezzanine I forget what the hell they called it. I think they were like a bluish color very vibrant blue. I remember being a young kid and thinking the building was going to come down it was shaking so much when everybody was stamping their feet chanting defense. I got all their autographs, I never could believe it when I went to where the players come out with my older brother and how big they were. I had never seen human beings that big. and they all signed the autograph book. We did have to chase Walt Frazier into a nightclub but we got his. They need to teach NBA history better. There are plenty of fans right now that get caught up in the hype of Wilt Chamberlain but in those moments, that’s also where Willis Reed should be brought up for this performance.
I didn’t even know about this until I just read about it.

They do talk about Walt Frazier‘s game. Clyde in my opinion was one of the top five players I’ve ever seen in my life and in the clutch, could have been the best. If you wanted to make sure nobody was going to get a hold of the ball, you gave it to Clyde if you were up by two with eight seconds left. You had guys like the butcher and read the actually they could all hit under pressure but Walt Frazier was the guy you wanted to see dribbling. They play the one where he stole the ball but I remember the more of Albert call that’s on the Holtzmans heroes album, “ stolen, by Fraser, out of backcourt drives ahead of the field down the lane for scooping one hander that is good!!” You have to hear it with all the pauses. It’s like a beautiful song Marv called a game back then!!
