As a young 27 year old, I was born in 95 when “Hip to the Game” came out by Lord Finesse. I found out about LF thru Mac & sooner after, all of DITC (as a group and individually), like Mac wished for in this interview.
A bit later, here I am a major DITC fan because of the awareness Mac brought to us. He was ridiculed by his idols so that the world can hear about some of the best to ever do it. People need to realize how hard Mac really worked to get where he was at and the love he had for everyone involved in it. He was working with a lot of names that weren’t going to help him top the charts, but he still did in timeless fashions that still produced success. His songs with talented women and also other underground artists are one of my favorite parts of his legacy

Honestly, it seems extremely racist. Like he was singling in on Mac just because he got a lot of views and was white. I mean didn't Kendrick sample something? Lord Finesse is always going to look bad because of this. And millions of views doesn't mean millions of dollars? Pay per view? what

Sampling and jacking a beat are way different. Obviously certain producers manipulate a sample more like say a dilla but Finesse made the beat and wrote the original song. This song also got mac pretty big. It helped him a lot and his young fan base that it caught didn't know who the fuck finesse was. He also initially didn't credit lord finesse. You also are operating on the assumption that he never got samples cleared. A lot of times artists dealt privately with the people they sampled. Bit of food for thought i dont think its as simple as you make it out.

  • @alfredschnozzenstein1657

First and foremost, RIP Mac Miller. Now, about this situation (I know it's old, but a lot of the people in the comment section can not be more wrong), at the end of the day, this is a business. Yes, Lord Finesse used a sample to make the beat, but he managed to clear that and got that taken care of just like Mac Miller should've done. If you don't follow protocol, especially in this music industry, you will be one of those people that end up with lawsuits and other miscellaneous things. Educate yourself and soak up as much knowledge as you can.

Lord Finesse is a legend, but legends aren't infallible. Bottom line is that hip hop's not about letting money get in the way of the music and the culture. And it's not about old school vs new school like a lot of self-proclaimed hip hop heads seem to think it's about. Lawsuits do NOT belong in hip hop. But it's cool. Never heard of Mac Miller until today when I was checking out some Finesse videos. Hip hop is built on prior musical achievements; sampling, freestyling over entire beats, emulating styles and phrases -- it's all part of the art. IP law stifles creativity, so I have to say as much as I want to protect content rights, I'd rather have free expression by artists.

yeah on a promotional mixtape that makes no money. He blew up on finesses beat. Do you think mac miller would be making the money he does now without that beat? You do have a point tho and i would totally agree if he was already established but how you gonna get famous off someone elses beat? It just sucks to hear people listen to the song as if it was original. That Lord finesse cd " the awakening" is one of the best hip hop cds i have ever heard and i think people need to listen to that.

What he meant by that was, Lord Finesse when he first heard this song (probably a year or two ago), he could've called up mac and mac could've deleted the "Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza" music video and stop playing it at concerts

You can see Mac is really cautious about disrespecting a hip-hop mogul like Lord Finesse, but is clearly disappointed with the lawsuit. Using Finesse's beat is more of a way to shout him out more than anything, and it sucks to see Finesse try and take 10 million from a young kid rhyming on youtube, regardless of how much he blew up. Mac is spreading Finesse's music by rapping over his classic beat and he gets penalized for it. Fucked up

black people and white people, generally, depending of course on demographic groupings, commonly exhibit specific forms of behaviour, mannerisms and social attributes that differ from each other. It's part of what makes white people a little different from black people and vice versa. This is referred to as cultural diversity and it is a great thing about living in North America. Sometimes, white people exhibit behaviours and mannerisms normally associated with black people; "acting black"

Lord finesse has so much money he didn't need to sue for 10mil. Be happy someone making bread off your beat after the fact you have more money than you even know what to do with. He was just butthurt mac had 20 mil views on his own beat. Smh. Lord finesse was jealous. Tell the people how it is. It wasn't about the money. He was butthurt and jealous.

And i love mac miller, but Lord Finesse had enough of people taking his shit and getting money of it.

I get it now, sorry. I should have looked at more facts about copyright etc before I posted the comment. After doing the research I understand what you mean. However, Mac Miller never profited from the song, it was released for free on UA-cam. Which means, no money was directly earned from it. I'll search up the laws about that now.

Anyone against Mac in this situation needs to go to a psychiatrist. This is flat out extortion. I'm sick of this world and the people in it thinking money is everything. If Mac wasn't rich Finesse wouldn't have cared. Despite what any of you say the truth is: Mac used the beat that Finesse sampled off somebody else :$, and may have made some money performing, etc, but idc if Mac made 10 billion $ off that track, suing somebody for using a beat that you sampled is extortion.

law suits don't belong, and neither do beats being used without royalties...Jazzy Jeff puts it well, he takes Mac's side to a degree, saying that he was stoked that mac grabbed the beat, got on and was not bad on it..I hear that, but cats like Preem, they don't see it that way...I love J's shit but you must side with Preem, only a crazy person would argue that guy about this kind of thing.

If this is the case then EVERYONE on UA-cam who sings or raps over a popular beat should get sued. Fact is, Mac is gettin sued becuz he HAS the money. If he never got famous, Finesse would never have thought about suing him. It's sad. Mac murked that beat it wasn't like he sucked or made fun of it or dissed em. He did the beat justice. Every MC that ever lived did the same thing Mac did. There isn't an MC alive who has only spit on their own beats. I'm a DJ & respect Lord Finesse but damn

  • @SoDrigh

Think about it. If you ever tried to rhyme, you would know you use instrumentals to practice on. So if you made a song from a sample and put it on youtube unaware of the fact that it would be a hit, where does that leave you? He didn't profit either, it was a mix tape, those are free. He merely sampled the song in show of respect. Finesse.
