Thanks for the clip Capt. When we bought our boat (Hatteras 43DCFB) it was just the opposite of your experience, I have never talked to the person we got our boat from, When we bought it we had no clue what we were doing, My wife and I decided we wanted to have a big enough boat to live aboard in the summer. a few weeks later we looked at the boat we purchased having no clue about big boat buying,, made an cash offer for a 3rd of value and less then half of asking. We spent about 6 hours by ourselves going over the boat, made the offer and had it accepted contingent on a survey that was favorable. The seller was tired of paying for storage and we just fell into a good deal for us (basically theft). We were very lucky and everything has worked out very well , in the four years we have been lucky enough to be her caretakers we are still learning things about her. Thank goodness for a owners forum for our boat which has helped us stumble along while learning on the job. Even a blind pig finds a kernel of corn. Going into our 4th year on her and for sure I wouldn't recommend doing it the way we did. We got very very lucky. CUOTO
Thank you for watching and supporting the channel James. Wow! What a great story and such a happy ending too! You are very lucky indeed. I too have found our owners association to be an incredible resource. CUOTO
@@svpaquita This is why the way I sold my Peterson 44 was so valuable to the new owner. He gained over a decade of intricate knowledge from me in about a weeks time. Although half price is pretty good to! Ha ha it’s all a trade off. Plus he got a very extended “sea trial”. That you almost never get.
Great message. True story: after inspecting what would ultimately be our boat, and doing the mental math about the yard work required to get it where we needed it, we made an offer that was so low I thought we'd never hear from the seller again. Much to our surprise he accepted, but not only that, after closing the deal they lent us a car while we were in town moving aboard, and we have since become fast friends. They live near Savannah and we stop whenever we pass through, we even crossed to the Bahamas together (on separate boats) just before the pandemic started (another long story). It was great to be able to call him with questions about the boat. Regarding changing throttles for attention, I remember my instructor at MPT when I did my license reiterating that the rules allowed you to change course or speed to give way, and that you should consider that changing course was less likely to result in the skipper showing up in the wheelhouse to ask what was going on :D
Thank you for watching. That's great! I appreciate you sharing those two stories with us. CUOTO
Memo to self...Tim will be taking care of all my funeral arrangements😂😉🍻
😂😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching Nicholas. CUOTO
Completely agree here. When I sold my 21 yr old Kelly Peterson 44, I offered to help the new owner sail it 300 miles down the Pacific to Ensenata, Mexico. This way I could teach him the systems, maintenance etc. Yes, that’s believing in your boat and no nothing went wrong ha ha. He was grateful and learned a lot. I had him video as much as possible.
I had sailed this boat tens of thousands of miles and lived aboard it for 12 yrs. Why not pass on the intricate knowledge that you could only acquire this way. In the marina there, helped him get the feel of close quarter maneuvering a larger semi- full keel boat with no thruster. And yes, I got top price for the boat and we were both quite happy. As I am a 100 ton Maser and US Sailing instructor it was no problem, legally or otherwise. Win win.
That's great Fred. I love it when things go right for everyone. CUOTO
I reckon your words transfer to how we should treat all people in general. With respect. Good story!
Thank you for watching Heath. That sure would be nice. CUOTO
Thanks for the clarification on piloting the tug, LOL I thought you might’ve had it on autopilot 😂😂😂
😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching Ronald. No, we run a tight ship when it comes to safety. CUOTO
@@svpaquita Tim, I'm so sorry for even bring that up, not realizing that the powers to be could be watching but you did cut your recording to clarify that the upper house was being manned or womaned, LOL
Hey Brother! Thanks for the lesson in creating good Karma..lol. You are totally right - there is so much value in having a positive buyer/seller encounter.
You should be on your way now…fair winds, my friend. Please let me know if there’s anything I can do.
Good morning Sputt! Thank you for watching. We decided to wait out the weather. Getting Underway around Wednesday. CUOTO
So true! Been through the buying/selling process several times and there’s definitely value in not making it a brutal win/lose situation. I feel like it’s one of those pay it forward situations, as long as it’s with another sailor and not some random landlubber.
Thank you for watching Nathan. CUOTO
Great advice, a great deal with a happy seller and buyer is the ticket. Down here in Florida we have some real smooth operators that will take advantage of uneducated buyers so using a broker is a real plus to keep the deal on an even keel. Some brokers are as shady as some sellers so there are no guarantees but word of mouth around the boat yards can help lead buyers and sellers in the right direction. Cant wait for some blue water sailing and maybe some cool fishing, fair winds and following seas brother!
Thank you for watching David. 💯 Agreed! I had a broker that talked me out of a few boats before we found this one. I would have had a terrible experience without him. CUOTO
Good night from Bangkok Cap Tim
Thank you for watching Jeff. CUOTO
Good advice. Thank's, Tim.
Thank you very much for watching Jack. Let me know if you get down FLL before Tuesday. CUOTO
@@svpaquita Heading to JAX .
interesting talk thank you tim
Thank you for watching James! CUOTO
So true, the sale/buy process is complex and a great skill to learn, unfortunately a lot of people will never get too deep into it due to the knowledge required and the stress involved. It's been many years now that I wished my dad had some kind of sales experience, but to no avail he just doesn't want to go there.
Thank you for watching David. A trusted knowledgeable broker is worth every penny they earn. CUOTO
CUOTO! will you be at boat show in Annapolis this fall?
Hey Lester. Great question! Crisalida and I will be coming back from spain then, and may be able to pull it off. I really want yo get there this year! Thank you for watching. CUOTO
@SV Paquita ok well if you do please stop by fleet reserve I will buy you guys a drink
@@lesterwicklein717 If we get there, we'll most definitely do that. Cheers!!!
Tim in your neighborhood any recommendations 😎
Hi Wes. I've been getting around a lot lately. Which hood? PR, FLL, NYC or Gulf of Maine?
Thanks for this. It's timely for me as I'm about to make an offer on a boat. I was thinking about this very issue of trying to be fair to the owner. For me, I just don't like leaving bad karma in my wake. But do you have any advice for dealing with brokers? I bailed on 2 deals now, not because I didn't like the boat, but because the brokers behaved in a manner that I found unprofessional and even duplicitous.
Thank you very much for watching. Do you have a broker representing you? (It cost you nothing and was an incredible asset to have an advocate working for me). CUOTO
@@svpaquita I was speaking about the brokers that were supposed to be working for me unfortunately. With the main problems being a lack of professionalism in communications. Such answering the phone without mentioning names or organizations, so I don't know if I'm calling the right number. Failing to mention critical details in a timely manner. Like the appointment was pushed back 2 hours. Or flat out lying to me in order to push me in a particular direction. Here is a direct quote, "Well you're not going to be able to get insurance on anything over 35ft.". My insurance agent laughed at that one.
I'm watching the CCT with all the water washing over your aft deck and wondering why the wire isn't in a donut. Buy a sailboat? Maybe in my next lifetime!
I was distracted by that as well. The tug was rolling some but it didn’t seem THAT bad. That was a lot of water coming aboard.
Thank you for watching Paul. No, the wire was in the donut (remember we have two, one for each side). CUOTO
Thank you for watching Rusty. The Caribbean swell is always there and we just got topped up with fuel so our decks are always wet. CUOTO
Dont forget Tim all that is true but a dishonest broker hurts both parties that happened to me G
Oh Garth. I am so sorry. I was just talking to my broker about that. Please let me know if you ever need the vest broker ever. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
Don’t buy a couch.......
😂😂😂😂 that's what Dan and Kika say. 😂 Thank you for watching. CUOTO
