    Good review.
    Nice comparisons of the composite vs the HD Retrovision component cables. Glad you talked about dithering, a lot of people don't know about that, so you should always hold on to your composite cables for when a game heavily uses dithering.

    While I've moved onto an OSSC these days, the iscan pro and HD Retrovision cables combo is an amazing set up!

      I've definitely been eyeing the OSSC - love that it up-converts Dreamcast VGA as well.

    Thanks for an informative video. I was on the fence about whether to go with HD Retrovision cable for my Genesis 1 vs SCART to HDMI converter, but decided to go with Retrovision due to simplicity and not having multiple wires/box with additional power plug setups. I have both a 4k Sony TV (240p compatible) and a 27 inch JVC late model CRT that accepts composite inputs. This way I will try the cable on both and decide which I like more. Additionally, I think that HD Retrovision will probably have less input lag vs the SCART to HDMI converter.

    Great analysis on the 2 cables. I'll add that they work equal wonders on the Neo-Geo and Sega Saturn. Sadly, I have no way to capture directly at the moment, but the plan is to eventually upgrade to an OSSC.
    As far as the 1st and 2nd batch of cables go, I personally have not noticed any difference on five different sets that I've used them on. Everything from a CRT to a 4KTV.

    Great video! I need to get some of those HD Retrovision cables for the Genesis. Right now they are out of stock on their site and E-bay is out of the question with their inflated prices :( Hopefully they will get more in soon.

    Great review! I recently got one of HD RetroVision's SNES Component cables to try out, but as good as my Super Famicom looks on my 40" HDTV via component, I am unable to capture any footage through my capture card. I can't really drop the big bucks on a Framemeister or OSSC right now, so I just got a simple SCART RGB cable and a SCART to HDMI upscaler for my SFC and both are due to arrive in my possession from Amazon on Tuesday of this week. If all I wanted to do was simply play the game I have for my SFC at the moment (Super Bomberman) then it'd work out fine and as I said, it looks great. But since my capture card (BlackMagic Design Intensity Pro 4k) can't capture anything below 480p/i I need to go SCART to HDMI and upscale. Anyway, yeah great video. I plan on making a video on my SFC setup once I get the aforementioned video cables and upscaler in. (Incoming shameless plug) Subscribe to ShiggitayPlays if you want to see my findings on the upcoming new setup.

    Great video. Could you please tell me how you captured your genesis hd retrovision footage? What capture card and upscalers did you use? I've been having a terrible time trying to capture my hdretrovision genesis cables on elgato.

    • @RetroTechSelect
      @RetroTechSelect  3 роки тому +1

      At the time of this video I was using an iScan Pro to an Atlona scaler, passed through my Denon AVR1913 to an Elgato HD. I've seen better success with Elgato products when the signal has been "normalized" by something like a video receiver first. Even my current StarTech capture card doesn't care for SNES footage from an OSSC unless it's been passed through the Denon.

    I love these cables but I’m having trouble finding a good component switcher so I can hook up all of my retro consoles via component. Most look pretty cheap. Any suggestions? Thanks.

      pdiddypuffnstuff This video is a wealth of info on switchers (maybe more than you'd ever want) - ua-cam.com/video/998tBzpJhVo/v-deo.html I personally prefer to stick to mechanical switchers, as they are harder to "get wrong".

    Your point about dithering at 2:06 is a deal breaker for me and I really appreciate your covering here. I personally don't like pixels clarity so much so that it breaks this effect. I won't buy those cables solely for that reason. Thanks for your sharing!
    Edit: this article is a great reading nerdlypleasures.blogspot.com/2015/03/the-case-for-composite.html

      There are a lot of scalers that have "smoothing" filters available. When paired with a clean signal, you can get a nicer picture than composite without sharp pixel edges, if that's what you're looking for. Then again, that's another expense on top of the cables.

    I have both cables and I LOVE the way the Genesis Cable looks on my Genesis CD 32X tower. Getting to see clear Sega CD and 32X Games. Holy damn, that is how they should have looked from the get go. However I am slightly dissapointed with the Snes cable. There appears to be alot of noise in the background with that cable. The Genesis tower I was comparing to the 32X Composite cable so no contest there however my Snes has the Purple Monster S Video cable and there is 0 noise going on there. There are things are about both I like. S Video has no Jailbars and no noise what so ever. The HD Com cable has more color brightness and definition and in terms of sharpness, they are darn near the same. Not sure which one to utilize. Have you seen a comparison between those two?

    • @RetroTechSelect
      @RetroTechSelect  6 років тому

      Gametourny 4ever I haven't. Definitely something to look into and the Genesis cables are the better of the two for sure.

      I've used S video many years I see nothing wrong with it.One UA-camr shows there is some guy that is making a composite/S video to HDMI converter upscaled to 480p.I will be ordering this for my systems that only use composite and s video.

  • @shawaynedavis4725

    I just ordered these cables and am waiting for them to come in. Am I understanding your setup correctly in that you go from these cables to the isCan pro and then into some other device that goes HDMI out to your TV? I am thinking of having the cables go to my Pioneer Receiver that has component to HDMI capabilities as getting another upscaler isn't an option at this time but if another box helps that isn't too expensive then I am interested. Thanks in advance!

    • @RetroTechSelect
      @RetroTechSelect  6 років тому

      Shawayne Davis yeah, I go through iScan Pro to an Atlona scaler. These cables offered a huge bump over composite straight through my AVR, but the Denon I have processes all 240p signals as 480i - which kept them from their full potential.

    • @shawaynedavis4725
      @shawaynedavis4725 6 років тому

      Retro Tech Select very cool. I am guessing my Pioneer is going to have the same issue. What model Atlona are you using? Thanks!

    • @RetroTechSelect
      @RetroTechSelect  6 років тому

      Shawayne Davis maybe not (fingers crossed). The picture will still be miles above composite! I'm using the Atlona AT-HD510VGA. They used to be crazy expensive, but the price is coming down fast. Got it for $50 on eBay... It doesn't like 240p much either, but the iScan pro gets the signal to a 480p that plays nice with it.

    I'm curious, do you own an OSSC or a TV that has both component and SCART? I'm curious whether RGB-SCART has any quality difference from HD Retrovision when plugged in to a device that accepts both inputs.

    • @RetroTechSelect
      @RetroTechSelect  6 років тому +1

      Derf Jagged My setup doesn't allow for direct comparison with SCART at the moment. I'm looking to invest in an OSSC soon, though, and I'd love to do some side-by-sides of SCART vs. YPbPr!

    Nice review. I'm interested in getting the snes component cables for my Super Famicom. 😊 Later this week or next week I'll do more research on the cables with TV compatability.

    • @RetroTechSelect
      @RetroTechSelect  5 років тому

      If your TV has 240p compatibility issues, something like the RetroTINK 2X should fix you right up. You can always test it by using composite cables and connecting the yellow RCA plug to the green (Y) component input. If your TV is compatible, you should get a monochrome/black and white picture.

  • @Nukle0n

    I really hate how they don't fix the dithered stuff for something like Sonic Mania. But I guess they know so many people are familiar with Sonic from emulators so they just copied that look without thinking to improve it with actual transparencies.

    • @RetroTechSelect
