Thank you guys for watching. I really need your help on this one with sharing, commenting and of course watching the whole video. Also ive had some travel drama(on a plane now HAHA) So im still working on the tool list and links.
As I am in the process of redoing the entire wiring harness for my 01 GTI and I am trying to be as OEM plus as possible by adding wiring for auto dimming side view mirrors and power folding mirrors among other wiring changes I appreciate all of this information
When I was a professional tech (admittedly about 20 years ago) I specialized in two things. NVH in drivetrain and suspension, and electrical. The electrical folder in my skillset was the greatest thing I ever collected, and is basically the key to my success in life. I quickly adapted that to industrial maintenance ( mostly injection and blowmolding) and eventual to industrial robotics and automation. If any budding techs techs already in the industry are thinking if you should concentrate on electrical, the answer is absolutely, without hesitation. It's awesome being able to R&R a transmission in 5 minutes, but at the end of the day to a boss, you are just another parts monkey flinging things around. But if you can find out why the dash dims when a customer pushes the seat heater button on a cold morning. You are indispensable. That's a skillset that will not only carry you as a tech, but will follow you into basically every industry and every part of your life.
I’ve been a mechanic for VW, Skoda etc for 9 years, my god I learned a lot from this. Excellent video, Charles. This project is top notch from start to finish.
I've been a HD mechanic for 15 years now on all makes and models of equipment. I've seen every style of wiring diagrams you can think of, and the 'ladder' style here is by far my favorite and easiest to follow. Of course VW has to run them vertical instead of horizontal but same idea. Once you get the hang of it its super easy to follow unlike some manufacturers who give you engineer level drawings with a spaghetti mess of wiring
You are an absolute legend for making the spreadsheet and the video. Probably hundreds of hours of work and you're giving it to us for free. Complete legend Charles!!
6:57 - Actually, that's the wire size in mm squared (mm2), not just "ordinary" mm. It actually shows the area of the wire core, basically if you cut the wire and look at the cut, the number will show you the area of that round piece of copper you see.
HAHAH I think the cost of entry is the biggest factor. The swap is easy, spending $25k up front is not. BUT if you can swing it, ive sold about $17k of parts so far.
Did the dq250 6 speed to dq381 7 speed swap last year enjoy every last minute of it. Reading the wiring diagram de-pinning the mech plug getting auxiliary oil pump to work correctly with the can hi-low ground & power Relocating auxiliary control valve down to the front of block for factory look.
Great job on this one! Thanks for teaching us how to fish! It would be really interesting if we could log daza swaps before and after this video to show the impact it has.
HAHAH I hope it's more! I really think its a much easier swap that it seems. The biggest issue is high cost of entry. You can make a lot of $ back, but its a lot up front
Thanks again, Charles life long VW guy. First was 1984.5 scirocco 8 valve manual.. 25 years later. My fourth car, 2004 Awp Jetta o2j. Never would have made it without the manual(Bentley). I learned so much today! Thank you.
one of my goals in life is to be as enthusiastic about working on vehicles as Charles is. I love working on my volkswagen’s (I have 2, a mk7 gti and a mk3.5 cabrio.) but I am in the military which leaves little time and very little money to buy parts. All I work on for my job is military vehicles, mainly humvees, LMTV’s and HEMMT’s. These vehicles were engineered so poorly that I really don’t enjoy working on them and I am so worried I’m going to lose my enthusiasm for working on my vdubs. However, I still love watching you take these cars apart and it makes my day so much better after a crappy day at work. thank you charles
It always feels better when it's your own. Especially when it's something challenging and you can stand back and look at the finished product, done to your standards.
This is the big leagues Charles. You were talking to me in Chinese the whole video. I didn’t understand anything but I still enjoyed watching u explain it. You were right saying it was gonna get very technical.
Its not that its very technical, but more that this video is not the walk through that many have hoped for. It starts off looking at a portion of the exhaust flap diagram discussing a few random details. Then skips over to the ecm and 91pin connector. Then goes back to the diagram again this time showing 3 pin connectors then gets into the importance of pinning and documentation. Never does show the full circuit. Then moves over to the gas pedal diagrams. This part actually makes a lot of sense to me in terms of what to de-pin and where to move it. I think a lot of people are going to have trouble reading the wiring diagrams from vw and audi. This was just a tiny snippet of a daunting and arduous task.
So we did talk about the whole circuit of flaps exactly as they are listed in the diagram. 95% of stuff doesn't look like the gas pedal. Thats why I picked the pedal and the flap. We are on both sides of that .
Fantastic. I loved the point you made, which is echoed in a quote from John Wooden: "If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?"
This is an amazing video Charles! I learned a lot, you explain things in a way I actually understand lol. If you ever had time for another wiring video, I’d love to see a trouble shooting video for basically any connector. For example like testing to see if you have power at a Maf sensor, to see if there’s a short or bad ground.
My first car was a '77 Volkswagen Rabbit and I wanted to change the stereo, so I told my dad and he said that he would help me with it. He was an electrical engineer with Detroit Edison at the Monroe Plant at the time, so we got the wiring diagrams. I am glad he helped me understand this stuff because the VAG wiring diagrams that are shown in this video were NOT clear to me at all! We figured it out and later I worked on my '85 Scirocco turbo and '92 Corrado using these, but really, it was not until I had a Boeing 727 systems class in 1989 when the notion of bus bars and load shedding that these diagrams started to make sense. I have the Porsche shop manuals for a 928 and used them when I had one of these for 19 years, and these are far less easy to read, but in some ways they make more sense because they are more of an overview. Great video!
I have done some wiring before for my car to disable the auto-lock mechanism for the center lock whenever I pressed the brake. Easy fix but not as easy when I try to put an aftermarket fuel pump for the car. This shows that diagram from the manufacturer should be accessible for the public to access albeit paid or need a licensed for it. But after watching the video couples of times while smelling something burnt in my room, I finally understand that I'm not equipped to do the job (yet). Thanks for sharing this video, Charles. You're the best.
Super video Charles... excellent production! I had a mk2 and mk3 Jetta... on the '86 Jetta GLI, ran into an intermittent stall problem... I had the Bently manual, and eventually traced the wiring and found a ground wire with an intermittent short... took quite a while to find the problem, but a simple fix once identified. What you described in this video would have saved me a lot of time back in 2001...!!
I’m throwing you a few bucks because this education has value to me. Classes are way expensive, books are expensive, education is expensive, except here. It’s worth well more than this $10 I’m throwing at you. I hope others agree.
After staring at an early 2000's Audi Bently, This is super easily explained and well covered. Wiring is going to be something I am going to tackle on that Audi and have already rewired the coil connectors and probably have to do the injectors as well. That 2001 A4 has some crispy wiring lmao And now I see how those 1.8t are just left because of the wiring. I am now doing my second VW bug wiring harness and it's a 1971 which makes it so much easier to understand wiring diagrams after years of doing it to my first car i ever owned. And the bug wiring is stupid easy tho lmao Bro I hope you have aircooled VWs and if not.... Please add one to yur show for us oldheads At 45 I am so much more experienced than i was at 22 lmao Love your vids keep em coming BIG DAWG
This video is amazing, as someone who's already done an Audi engine swap, I wish I could've seen this 5 years ago! Now I'm looking at newer platform engine swaps (B8.5) and what scares me most is Component Protection and dealing with module coding. I've heard ODIS is basically required for this. Might be a future idea for a video! I really want to put a 3.0 TDI from a Q5 in my 2013 Allroad haha
Excellent! This is everything I'd hoped it would be! While I do prefer the electrical schematics I typically deal with at work, line diagrams are fantastic and very useful. Thanks so much sharing this! 😎💛
Had a 94 Urs4. 5 cylinder is such an awesome engine. I now have a 2017 Alltrack. Love it. Would be better with a 5 cylinder of course. Swapped a chipped 150pd tdi engine into a b6 A4 wagon for someone. Thing was awesome.
@@HumbleMechanic yeah that’s what I did when I scored my BHW Tdi swaps, just got donor cars. I was the one who tagged you in Facebook about the too much RTV 😂. I’ve been looking at copart auctions for a little bit now.
Awesome video thanks for sharing. I'm sure those who want to do it will go in with some confidence. If you willing could you maybe do a video on how to read wiring diagrams for us dummies,or point in in the right direction where to learn.
About to do an engine swap myself, have a 2.5 out of a n 06 Beetle going into an 04 Jetta with a bad motor. the wiring swap is what makes me nervous, thanks for breaking it down for me.
NICE!!!! I love it. There are options if you don't want to do the wiring. Sal at S&P or Dave at TDC Shop might be able to make you one. you'll need to send them the harness from the Beetle. When I pulled the 3.6 out of a Passat a few years ago, I followed Dave's guideline for where to cut the body harness. So I could send it to him and have him make me a harness. I probably will to it myself ,but I have that option.
Great video and awesome work! Do you know if there are some resources to check differences in pinout of modules revisions, like door ones ending in B, C and others?
Hey Charles what's the VW PN for the depin tool? I have tried several, and ultimately use one I made, but this looks awesome! Does it work well on older watercooled cars? (CE2)?
Great video- kudos to the simple way you’ve explained such a complicated job! P.S. it seems I’ve followed similar approach ages ago when I’ve tried to retrofit a trip computer from Opel Astra F into Audi B3/80(my Excel sheet has only 4 rows, but the idea was the same😅)
Great video. Thank you. I'm always concerned even when I add a small aftermarket accessory, like a louder horn on my car that I'm going to ruin something if I go the lazy route and just plug it in to the OEM wiring.
Great video like always Charles, great information. Have a question for you, sorry if it's asked but is it okay to solder wires in your professional opinion? Keep up on the amazing videos.
When you were doing the wiring diagram, did you look at every module. example a/c, abs, etc or really just the 91 connector and a few of the other connectors? Currently doing a jetta tdi to jetta gti swap. I did do 70% of the work you showed already and I haven't touched a single wire yet. I have verified the 94pin ecm connector and 36pin cluster connector so far and have a similar spreadsheet created.
Awesome video again, just quickly, Did you have to touch any wiring inside car obviously minus fuel pump and seats and or swap any modules over thanks?
Dont hold your breath bud. I can tell you off top, 98% of the people who watched this video are just as confused as they were before it started. This is a theoretical breakdown of how you might go about looking at one circuit. That said, there are lots of others that are more complex and require understanding of how to trace wires, complete circuits, and read diagrams. Not to mention some of the hangups that will inevitably happen. Its incredibly tough for shops to account for this, let alone price that out. Customers would basically need to hand over a blank check. You're already gambling with a wrecked RS3 trying to get it running and swapped into the Golf. Then comes a laundry list of other components that may or may not have issues. Honestly if you don't work on cars or have good friends that will sacrifice time, you're going to be looking at a bill that negates the entire thing.
There was a shop that did it, they stopped. Im not sure exactly why. LOL Things like this are HARD to make $ on at any kind of scale. You'd basically tell a client, bring me your car, and $40k and we will try and make it happen. Could be more, could be less.
do you have any starter tool box guide video recommendations for a semi truck diesel tech apprentice going into tech school anything would help thank you
Electronic Schematics are my worse nightmares currently as an Apprentice 😭, with hydraulics I can try and fight my way around but with Electronics I'm always Capsizing🔥😭
Hi @HumbleMechanic , I have a question regarding the ECM. I'm assuming you using the one off the RS3. won't the golf now identify as an RS3 ? And is there a way to still use the RS3 ECM and code it so that it now identifies still as a Golf but with the Audi ECU? Did you encounter any issues with regarding the coding in a way that VW blocked off the coding maybe?
Yes. In fact this is one of the things unitronic is working on now. It had to be set up with the golf VIN. It worked with an Audi vin. But then the car thought it was an audi
Good day mr Humble Mechanic. Im in need of your assistance. I have a obdeleven pro version and could access control unit 19 gateway. Recently i am unable to access it, it gives error message stating no communication or no data. How can i diagnose this. I drive a vw polo 6c 2017. I hooked up to a different vw car and it works perfectly. Please help
Yes I used my golf Keys. When you do it right, you tell the ECM/TCM that it's now a Golf not an Audi. It's like "Oh okay cool:". That did require ODIS the VW/Audi scan tool. That is the next tool on my list to get.
@@HumbleMechanic that’s cool. At my dealer I found an old 6160A tablet, I was allowed to keep it as my own. Got windows 10 on it and installed Odis. Thing that sucks is the touch screen doesn’t work, so I have to use a wireless mouse and keyboard 😂

Hello there! Have a great Weekend!🙌🏼🙌🏼

When you were doing the wiring diagram, did you look at every module. example a/c, abs, etc or really just the 91 connector and a few of the other connectors? Currently doing a jetta tdi to jetta gti swap. I did do 70% of the work you showed already and I haven't touched a single wire yet. Luckily or unlucky can bus connects them all via gateway. So you need to be sure the can wires are right. In theory everyone should talk
Humble is there such thing as a place you can get pin sets from?? Or did you re use pins??
How does it work when you go for your NC state inspection? I've always wondered this.

BTW have you sold your R interior? I'm in need of one for mine. Seats look ruined by some water damage.
Awesome video again, just quickly, Did you have to touch any wiring inside car obviously minus fuel pump and seats and or swap any modules over thanks?
not really. The only other thing I had to do is splice the battery maintenance module with 1 wire
@@HumbleMechanic awesome thank you
Thank you! Hopefully we will see more shops perform this swap now. Will shopdap ever drop a swap kit for this swap?
@@chozen_juan Would be cool if shopdap had a complete 2.5L swap kit for the MK7R though, lol.
There was a shop that did it, they stopped. Im not sure exactly why. LOL Things like this are HARD to make $ on at any kind of scale. You'd basically tell a client, bring me your car, and $40k and we will try and make it happen. Could be more, could be less.
@@HumbleMechanic Understood. Enjoyed watching the build process. Great content!
So if I do the conversion myself, can I use your table for my wiring harness?
if yes then thank you they are very helpful
As a guide
@@HumbleMechanic Okay, perfect, but I have a Golf 7r from 2015, will that fit or is it different?
Here from the live stream 🫡
💪💪💪
Thanks for doing this!!!!
Once you understand how to read the wiring diagrams it is actually relatively easy, and very enjoyable imo
there is always a curve ball or 2 but yea its not too bad.
Thank you so much Charles !
Great advise! 👍🏼
do you have any starter tool box guide video recommendations for a semi truck diesel tech apprentice going into tech school anything would help thank you
Electricity is magic and I’m not a magician.
*Been watching since 2018. How has VW not put out a contract on Charles?* 😂
Hahahaha one day they will
Electronic Schematics are my worse nightmares currently as an Apprentice 😭, with hydraulics I can try and fight my way around but with Electronics I'm always Capsizing🔥😭
Engine swaps are no joke when come to wiring.
Once you know what you’re trying to do, it’s not bad.
@@HumbleMechanic yes agreed. Do you have any specific site to reach out? I’m not a vw guy, I have some codes on my vw.
Damn ,you doing still great job, many people from europe should learn :p
Good day mr Humble Mechanic. Im in need of your assistance. I have a obdeleven pro version and could access control unit 19 gateway. Recently i am unable to access it, it gives error message stating no communication or no data. How can i diagnose this. I drive a vw polo 6c 2017. I hooked up to a different vw car and it works perfectly. Please help
Good video. My question on these daza swaps always has been, did you adapt your original golf keys to the car or the Audi?
Yes I used my golf Keys. When you do it right, you tell the ECM/TCM that it's now a Golf not an Audi. It's like "Oh okay cool:". That did require ODIS the VW/Audi scan tool. That is the next tool on my list to get.
@@HumbleMechanic that’s cool. At my dealer I found an old 6160A tablet, I was allowed to keep it as my own. Got windows 10 on it and installed Odis. Thing that sucks is the touch screen doesn’t work, so I have to use a wireless mouse and keyboard 😂
@@SJMotionsUnfortunately that is not possible with newer odis as of late because of their 2FA... 😢
Where can I get that tool from?
Thanks for this 🙏🏻
you're welcome. I hope it's helpful.
peace in mind that there is going to be problems regardless of your experience. just how you prepare for them will make all the difference
Respects 🫡👏
20:30 -- Done with the air ride stuff, eh? Eager to hear more.
I have a plan :)
Can this SWAP work in a Golf MK 5....🤔
Thank you good sir .......
But do you think I could do a manual B8.5 s6 Avant?
I can't afford an rs6, but would love these in manual
Oh yea. I did a manual swap on my b8 s4
@@HumbleMechanic LoL I think I meant B9 😅 I want the new digital display cars with and the Hot V engine
nice job!
The size of wiring is not in milimeters (mm). It's in square milimeters (mm²).
It's something we use in Europe and many other normalized countieys! 😊
Oh the gatekeeping for the swap is over lets goooo!!!!
