Why can’t the bbc weather be this informative basic information is a understatement, this is why I watch this broadcast on UA-cam it’s brilliant well done 👍
Fair enough - but these extended forecasts basically forecast every possible outcome (masked by computer references to sound technical). So you can trust them in the sense that whatever happens it will have been referenced in this forecast. Wet, dry, below average, possibly average, slim possibility above average, Northerly, North easterly possibly Westerly. It is not really forecasting at all.
By a long mile the best presenter. Meteorological explanation is thorough, concise and clear. It reminds me of an excelent lecturer I had at the Geography Department in University of Galway.
Very many thanks Aidan, thank goodness the anticyclonic gloom has finally gone and we have sun back with us once more. We’ve had some lovely sunny days since, but it’ll be cold from here on, but like as not, the snow will mostly be in Scotland and on higher ground elsewhere, but time will tell. Talking of the snow in 62/63, from what I recall it was extremely cold and with a great deal of snow that lasted for weeks. Large banks of snow from where the drifts piled. As I remember sludge was around for ages, but everyone got through it after a good while. We definitely had a very white Christmas! Thanks again Aidan, to all at the Met Office too. God bless all those in Spain 🇪🇸 and I hope there’s no loss of life this time. 🙏 Take care everyone
Nice to see you pre-empting the popular tabloid press and explaining we're not about to suffer "beast from the east 2" from now on for the entire winter.
It's likely to get cold or very cold though. He didn't say anything about whether we are or not in for another BFTE. We tend to have them when we encounter a sudden stratospheric warming event, which occur I think mainly later in the winter?
For 100% accuracy in a weather forecast, look out of the window. Yes, it's winter, there will be snow, it will come and go, trains will stop, roads will get blocked, schools will close, council road gritters won't respond in time....typical winter. Get over it.
🇬🇧 AHH I really enjoyed this weather forecast for the rest of this week & into next week! Many forecasts are hum drum & weighed down with technical stuff. This chap was clear, decisive & explained the simulations very understandably & his approach was fresh & breezy... Hopefully not freezing breeze! As I live in the far North East, near the Scottish borders & the perilous North Sea, it's good to know what maybe in store for us! Thank you for the info & it's cheerful rendition! Peace 🇬🇧🙋🏻♀️
I really appreciate your sensible approach to a weather forecast like the coming events. A view that there is a chance of bad weather , but possibilities that it could change. I can ignore the tabloid press of doom and gloom and the app on peoples phones telling them snow is coming and the beast from the east is going to kill us all if we don't panic buy bread.
@@philsanderson3350 You are correct about 46/47 and 62/63. In the former the snow lasted from late Jan 47 until mid-March. Transport was disrupted, power failed due to no coal deliveries, livestock died and food was short. I was five at the time and remember my dad climbing a ladder to knock huge icicles off the gutters with a broom. He was worried that somebody would get speared when they went out the door. A rapid thaw in mid-March caused a lot of flooding. In the latter snow and cold lasted from Christmas 62 until early March. The sea froze for 1 mile out from the Kent coast. Have a look at Wikipedia articles "Winter of 1946/47 in the United Kingdom" and "Winter of 1962-1963 in the United Kingdom"
Wow. I heard someone on the radio saying that heavy snow is coming and will be icy and people must take this seriously and be prepared. The way he was talking I thought it was inevitable and the country would be blanketed by snow. Though it appears it is not, and yes there maybe some snow and ice. And I would of course say this time of year start preparing for the colder weather to come.
I understand that the models or certain ones tend to err on the side of mild rather than cold in these types of situations. Bring on the Arctic blast! I want plenty of snow for where I am in north Derbyshire.
And there's me thinking and expecting the temperature in the UK to be a stable 21 through out the whole year! Errrr... it's mid November, July has actually finished.
Snow across NE Scotland isn’t unusual in November, I can remember a few Remembrance Day and Children in Need nights with snow on the ground in Aberdeen and shire. That said it does often herald in a colder winter so who knows?
Thursday 14th. Rain map for Exmouth Tuesday looks to be a very wet afternoon. App suggests 40% chance of rain. Is the rain deterministic and App now ensemble?
Good forecast! But, please, show Dublin (where I am) and other Irish cities on the map. Afterall Dublin is about 50 miles from the UK, and the other Irish cities not much further, so why not at least show them on the map?
Well, we’re. nearly half way into November , your not going to get well to wall sunshine and a heatwave now Actually surprised we haven’t had thick frosts by now
Soon we will get the " there may be a dusting of snow on higher ground"....which will be translated as the "beast from the east" , which of course never happens.
First snow is a very tough to forecast as well as sensitive subject to put on social media, well worded and elaborated forecast, let's hope the Karen's keep their criticism at minimum, as well as bread and milk on the shelves 😅
we used to have better weather before these new weather graphics and when the weather presenters used to stick stickers on a chart with snow, rain, wind, heat wave etc.stickers😝
hPa stands for hectopascal. It's a multiple of the unit of pressure e.g. air pressure. Pressure is measured in pascals (Pa) and 100 pascals = hectopascal.
How do professional metroligists know when it's snowed? They look out of the window. If its white, they're right.......... i am a great advocate of these people, and I believe that trying to preempt their expertise is stupid. The weather is a massive non globulus piece of utterly mysterious stuff that no one understands. All praise to our metroligists who try to make sense out of chaos.

How refreshing to see a proper, well researched and well explained forecast. Great work!

Aidan - thank you and well done for putting the less responsible media outlets in their place. The hysterics about snow are tedious.

Thankyou Aidan for a very well explained forecast as always.
If we get any significant snow here on the south coast I'll be gobsmacked because the last time any snow worth talking about was 2013.
I really hope it does
I am in the south east and got 10-20 cm in 2018.

Excellent forecast Aidan . Thank you.
Good job Aidan, balanced common sense approach from the Met Office
For the first time in 2024, I’m actually convinced it could snow in Northamptonshire (Look at GFS)
Its the GFS tho.
I'm also from Northamptonshire. Let's hope we do see some snow, and not just cold rain 😅.
It hasn’t snowed in Northampton in 2024
Yes. only look at the model that shows what you want 😂 ignore everything else, even the other members in the gefs suite
