I relate to your experiences a lot. I've always been perceived as young-looking, and have had delays in physical development compared to my peers. Picking at nails and skin too. And I have a slow verbal processing speed, so it takes a LOT of energy to keep up with conversations and speak at length. Often my thoughts can't keep up with my words, so I end up making confusing statements, or I pause my speech for too long and someone starts interrupting me. I've always felt more comfortable with written communication.
I am in grad school and I could pass as being in high school. I don’t wear a lot of makeup and my mannerisms don’t really fit a specific age. I think it’s interesting how autistic people sometimes interact naturally with people either younger or older because I started noticing that when I was in middle school. I can use this to my advantage because professors and supervisors usually think I seem mature. But then I laugh at kids humor 5 or fixate on cutesy stuff 5 minutes later😂
Yes! I am on the wrong side of 50, but I still get carded for beer! It is true, we can look much younger.............................................Ok, that might be a bit of a stretch; but I do ask them to card me. However, I too do not feel age; truthfully I don't "feel" any different as years fly. Being older, I just can not understand or associate with peers of my, almost, extinct species - but as a child I tended to converse much easier with those older. Sorry, must keep this short, I'm being called to go outside and play!
I've been hearing that autistic people look extra young more and more lately, too. I'm 40 and yesterday I got called "sir" in the McDonald's drive-thru because, I guess, they thought I was a teenage boy (I have a female voice). I get comments on my youthful appearance quite often if I reveal my true age. Otherwise I just get assumed to be a much younger person. I am a woman who doesn't know how to do makeup, so this may contribute. If I wear makeup I somehow look older, which is the opposite of why most women do it. LOL. Interestingly, I got my first couple of gray hairs at age 20 and they've increased consistently in one spot on my head over the past two decades. I love my skunk streak!
Stimming to me is my comfort, I agree with drinking water, I always used to run around and then go get water every 5 minutes, eating is definitely up there, because of how it brings my life energy about, not the food, but the action
I've noticed the trait of autistic or socially anxious people often looking younger than their age too. I wonder why that is. Perhaps people who look young for their age are more likely to get bullied which may lead to social difficulties, though I doubt that's the answer. Perhaps, more likely, autism is linked to a specific chemical difference in the brain which also coincides with the part of the brain involved with aging. Or something like that.
Awesome video! Very insightful!
Very descriptive of me .
