So glad Charlie is getting the recognition he deserves. BBS is the hardest working band ever. Being from Atlanta, I've been lucky enough to see them from the beginning. Hell, they'd play the grand opening of a library if it meant getting to play music. Thank you for restoring my faith in music, Charlie.

@@Ken-le9hh Go Steelers! I lived in Fox Chapel back in the early 70's when I was a kid and have been back to visit numerous times over the years. Carnegie of Homestead....beautiful place. What a great venue to see a good band. If I'm not mistaken, Stevie Ray Vaughan played there back in the 80's.

The stereo thing reminds me of what my dad in 1972 to our old gramophone player, it was valve driven and he sacrificed everyone's music in the house for me he, turned it into a tube amp. After about a week he . Went ok, you cant stand in the living room doing this. So he made me a tiny 1 x 12 ax7 amp with a 6 inch speaker with the guts of the old Gramophone player. I still think I had one of the best distorted tones for the early 70's because of that. He would sit and listen to Aqualung with me and try and tune it to get than solo tone on this tiny little unit. He was an electrical genius

I loved this. Blackberry Smoke is one of my favorite bands. I’m one of the many you guys were talking about who’ve discovered the guitar recently. I’m 43 and I’ve always wanted to play guitar. But thought I didn’t have the talent. Combine my teenage nephew becoming a really good player in his first couple of years playing, my Grandfather passing and leaving me his vintage 59 Gibson LG2, and being stuck at home for so long, I started learning in early 2021. It’s become a passion like I never thought it would. I have no expectations of being a great player. But being able to make music, and especially to be able to play some basic rhythm to Blackberry Smoke songs, has literally changed my life.

Rhett... I can’t thank you enough for doing this. Charlie and BBS are one of my favorites and his standard sound of single P-90s in a half stack is just what I love, even though I recently bought a Helix to try and evolve a bit and try stuff out.
Another thing he said I really relate to is I have a 16 year old son that tried guitar at 13 and took lessons and seemed to like it, then it was back to skateboards. But about a week ago he came down and grabbed on of mine and disappeared upstairs. Yesterday I heard playing up there and my wife mentioned it. I left the house and she called and said not only was it my 16 year old but my 18 year old was getting in on the action.

Ole Georgia boy here (Kennessaw), now in the north...grew up with Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, ARS...the good kick ass southern grit. It is a culture and it stays with you. You still hear it with bands like Blackberry Smoke, Whiskey Myers, etc. It will always be there, re-discovered, and kept alive. Great reference in the interview to L. West...man, my first concert in the Omni in ATL. Such an influence and still stays with me as a guitat player today. A fond musical foundation moment for me in the south was being 14 and ending up on a Saturday night at a concert after a Chattahoochee River Race....who could forget standing 2nd row in front of an elevated outdoor stage to see Mothers Finest. That band could jam. Two people I would love to sit down and hang out with and just talk and play music all day. 1) Loretta Lynn, and 2) Charlie Star. Keep that southern musical tradition going man!!!

I really love Charlie and Blackberry Smoke, and I really love your channels Rhett, so this was always going to be a winner for me. But it exceded even my high expectations. I’m so glad I listened to this interview. I recently started listening to Blackberry Smoke and started to notice how great Charlie is. And how cool he is. I compared him to Jimmy Page to somebody just recently and hearing him talk about how much he respected Jimmy Page was great. He started in rock music loving the bands I did. But I told my wife that I just had a connection with his style (its just a little more country that she is used to me listening to). When he started talking about Rick Richards it got kind of crazy. I lived in Atlanta in the late 70s and early 80s and grew up with the Atlanta music vibe. I saw Rick Richards in The Desperate Angels. And I know Rick Price (GA Satellites' bass player) from being the guitar player of The Brains. There was a great music scene in ATL before the 90s and 2000s. Charlie brings that vibe back out. And hearing him talk confirmed everything I had told my wife about this guy.

You probably will never see this as old as this video was, but it just came up on my feed. I went by it before it registered in my brain, what I had just seen. I'm a huge fan of Charlie Starr and Blackberry Smoke. I stumbled on them too, about 6 months or so ago. I was like, how have I missed you guys for all these years. It was on a Sunday morning and I didn't stop watching until around midnight. They are awesome. Anyway, I loved the interview and the exchange between you guys, it made for a very interesting thing to watch. I think it's about time for a second one too. Charlie, i love all of your music, you brought back the sound of southern music, that was lost for many years, when you talk about Mick Jagger, sounding like like he was from the south, this hit a Button, i told my friends this 30 years ago in Georgia, and they just looked at me and said What, i said listen to him on the song Angie, He says Angie in a southern way, they said ya, i can hear it now, lol, rock on Brother, I am glad that you Brought back the Capricorn Studio, you and Jimmie Hall and others, i am glad that they did not tear it down, when i lived in Macon, i used to go out front and stand there listening to the bands that recorded there, you are a person who gives back, you are a person who cares, Cousin Figel

The unfortunate gig cancellations have given us a lot of new podcasters, and some really insightful, entertaining and educational podcast interviewees, from Bukovac to Timmons, and beyond (not to mention their own new shows). I could happily listen to Charlie Starr all day. Fantastic.

I love BBS. I’ve seen them twice in Houston. One show was during the rodeo at the dog race track. The crowd to me was surprisingly small. They played their ass off anyway. Great show. I got to meet them at the second and they were great to the fans. BBS, The Wood Brothers, Marcus King Band and J.D. Simo are carrying the torch.

Man Charlie Starr is a great guy, I want to meet him someday as I’m a guitar player singer also I’ve played in a bar band since 1989, biker bars, broken Windows, the whole room fighting cops and we just jammed through it all. I played bass for years now guitar for probably 15 years. Love it! BBS is a kick ass band and Charlie Starr is great! They don’t get more real than These guys.

I came across Charlie doing a Premier Guitar Rig Rundown a couple months back and thought he seems like a really great guy. I then looked for Blackberry Smoke music on UA-cam and found One Horse Town. I have loved them ever since!

Rhett! This was one of my favorite shows. Because of you and Charlie’s background, it felt like I was listening to old friends talks about where I came from. Love you dudes.

I was supposed to see Blackberry Smoke in Paris a couple years ago, but on the night of, I got back late from work and it was raining cats and dogs. So I skipped it. Still beat myself up to this day. Charlie, besides having the greatest first name ever, is an awesome guitar player/songwriter and seems to be a pretty cool human being on top of that. Rhett, these interviews are great, keep them coming!!

Thanks so much to both men for this interview. I agree to everything Charlie says about valve amps that fill the room. And p90’s. His playing and sound gives so much inspiration.
BBS combines all kind of bands and styles that I love. Blues, southernrock, country, soul, motown, rock ‘n’ roll.
Charlie is an awesome gifted guitarplayer ánd singer. So much soul, groove and all those smooth blue notes. What a craftmanship.
And he’s a real nice guy. Being that good and still humble. Haha, That’s weird. While writing this I realise that when he would have been an asshole, them I would still love him. Because of his music... 😂
I’ve seen BBS 4 times in the Netherlands. And when They come back I will see them again. At least when I Don’t have to gig myself.

Really glad you addressed that question Rhett...I've played a fair amount of electric guitar but I think I'm essentially still an acoustic player who also plays electric guitar...I'm still working on taming the right hand!!
Also thank you for this interview, I was not familiar with Charlie or the BBS before this...I got so much out of this interview with Charlie with me being a songwriter first and a guitar player second...it's a real inspiration to hear from someone that still puts an emphasis on the song, including how important lyrics are...
(Wish I could have asked him his thoughts on Chris Whitley an artist who took guitar playing, songwriting and singing to such a high level and integrated them all so seamlessly... I get the feeling Charlie must be a CW fan, somehow...)
    Thanks Rhett!!!
