As housing prices continue to rise in Hong Kong, young professionals are living in ever-shrinking spaces. Finance worker Adrian Law, 25, paid more than HK$6 million (US$765,000) two years ago for his tiny 292 sq foot studio apartment. Meanwhile teacher Jezz Ng, 29, has chosen to live in a new co-sharing apartment, rather than shelling out for her own rent.
This is why a lot of sci-fi movies shot their scene at Hong Kong. It's like what the world in the far future looks like, dense and overpopulated.

@@filipelimartins HK has a 25% of its population in poverty, and one of the highest Gini inequality index of the developed world. Or do you consider the poor to not be human beings? When you're poor other countries don't wanna take you in. You don't speak the language and have no resources, you can't LEAVE even if you want to.
On point. Some day, we sick of this system.
For the people saying “why don’t they just move to another country???”
Aside from leaving their friends, family, and the place they called home since day one... do you really think it’s that easy? There’s something called citizenship. Most people have only ONE citizenship from the country they were born in. (Very few have dual citizenships through either their parents or immigrations etc.) That means they only have permanent residency in their home country. They can travel to a lot of places visa free, but ONLY for a limited period of time, from weeks to a few months. Certain countries even require a tourist visa depending on your citizenship.
They cannot just pack up their bags and decide they want to work and live in Australia from now on. It doesn’t work that way. Unless they have unique talent or offer something extraordinary, it’s VERY difficult to even obtain a work visa, let alone permanently residency (citizenship) in a foreign country. So please stop asking “why don’t they just move to another country?????”
*Because they can’t.*
yes agree .
@Chips Raider no they can't Hong Kong has it's own citizenship and ID card and password and they would have to go through the border every day

I thought u could find a job in another country and stay on a work visa (as long as u have a clean record of course) for as long as u are employed?? Reapplying from time to time??
Plus many countries have a weird age 30 work visa limit. So anyone over 30 need not apply. It's ageism but oh well

This is what happens when you turn shelter, something we need for survival, into an investment. Those at the top are making it big while the growing population losing out are finding it harder and harder to survive. The worst thing you can do is empathize with the winners, especially if they are winning at a system that is beating you. That’s why change is not happening. Everyone dreams of investing instead of having a Modest space of their own. It should be a lofty goal to live alone and own that space
Isn't shelter an investment? Wasn't it always?

Low property price in US is caused by property tax. Americans are paying for it as well just by instalments. In HK you can stop paying for it at least after paid off the loan before retirement. In US you are still going to pay for it after you retired, property tax could go up with property value, retirement pension is usually fixed.

*u know they say the high price rise is coz of land scarcity but in reality its poor land management* . *HK has more than enough space*
This is really the problem of capitalism richer buy more to get richer before the poorer earn enough for deposit. No systematic change to the housing supply system no change of fate to the poor in such a high price market.
It's not land management. HK has real estate tycoons that control the land and they create the illusion of scarcity. No different than diamonds. The chinese government tries to control the tycoons but the tycoons own the media and they brainwash HK people into believing that their problems are caused by the Chinese government. The government 🏃
For a so-called "progressive city", it's sad and disheartening that many residents live in a rather REGRESSIVE existence.
"Buying" property in Hong Kong doesn't mean that you "Own" the property, because every single plot of land in Hong Kong are owned by the Government (Hongkong SAR), they lease that plot of land for 99 years (maximum), if the lease has ended, the land is either going back to the government or sell to other property developer, that's why anyone who bough a property in hongkong have a limited term with 99 years maximum.
Oh, but.. Can he give the property to his family or his children tho?

Okay I don't know if it's because I come from Singapore (second most expensive housing in the world) but the fact that he can own a flat at 25 is pretty amazing because in Singapore you can't even apply/own public housing flats as a single (unmarried) applicant till you're 35 years old. And if you want to buy private property the starting price for a unit that size is also about $700k. Also I think having your own place for the price the woman paid is also okay hahaha but I think this is just because I'm from Singapore and the rental/housing prices are quite similar. The only advantage is if you get married that's why in Singapore people apply for houses before they get married so they can own property at a younger age (before 35).

Rata 4U , So wouldn't it be better if we start to control births instead of having a lot of kids like people still have nowadays ? Also, some insects are facing extinction, actually where I live, mosquitoes are increasing every year and now they are still alive even with low temperatures. Nobody own lands, the governments own lands, because everyone think that just because they have a title of a house or a property in their names, they think it's theirs, but you still have to pay property taxes yearly and also, there are some things that you can't even do inside your fences, taking the risks of receiving a ticket or being arrested. Would you like to be put into a condo ?
There are documentaries on Brazil that you mind find interesting. Honestly it's the geography that's limiting but they're trying to change that.
Is this supposed to be sad? While im watching this from my $150/year house..
These are moments when you can proudly say that you live in a 1BHK apartment, the catch is however the bedroom, hall and kitchen are all one, more like a studio apartment but 1 BHK
That first guys apartment wasn't horrible. He had a sink and a range and a microwave and room for a rice cooker. That washing machine was most impressive. I would be happier spending more money for less space if I had freedom rather than getting bullied to buy a house with someone that I hardly know.
yea all your years of hard work goes to a flat you "own". when you die, do u really own anything? and that's where you put a huge chunk of your energy and time.
No but at least you can pass it down tonyour children sonthey dont have to work sonlong to buy a tiny space and can focis on building something bigger
Salute to your thinking
I own a much smaller condo and I was happy in it. Easy to clean, I cant invite guests, my condo fees are low and I can afford to keep it empty. Small is not always bad. I plan to go back to it if I'm still single when I retire.
Nice, I felt a bit embarrassed for seeing those benefits so thanks for validating my thoughts
Same as Dubai. I work there before, 16 people in a flat with 2 washrooms and 1 kitchen.
It’s nice to have this apartment for your life. Mansion or big house won’t make you so happy coz I would feel less secure and cleaning is stressing me out so think and peace, stay simple life all the time
I would like to live in Hong Kong, but I cant. You know why?
You said it, the rent in too DAMN HIGH!!!!
Dodged a bullet!
The music makes it sound like he's living in a slum with no running water
The people all living on the pedestrian bridge almost have more space
Small space is not actually a problem, but small space with higher cost is the PROBLEM
His flat looks way more spacious than the one which my family of 3 people used to live in.
I live in HK and sadly, I think the guy’s apartment is relatively spacious…
I m studying overseas but i m from india and we have very big houses there, we live in a countryside, and our town is surrounded by sugarcane and paddy fields. Watching this really makes me feel much more grateful for what I have.
life is so hard in here, only thing people can do is birth-control
I became a digital nomad because living like this in NYC was no longer acceptable. I was paying 1750 USD for a studio apartment. This is utterly horrifying.
It sounds like they need to get creative and either create infrastructure of sort either underground, underwater, or above the water
if i lived like that i'd be rioting too
Sad thing is they are protesting for basic rights n democracy, nth but the verdict charge close to a riot
@@cyminnielau lolll finally there is someone who understands our situation
$60.000 Hongkong dollar ?? And he live at that place ?? Hongkong properties is that expensive ? He will live in luxurious house or apartment if he move to Indonesia
Yaaa u r righttt even if we earn more, we still have to spend like our entire spending just to buy a tiny flat
imagine living in one of these during lockdown, it would be emotionally tiring
Hong Kong is a place for those who could be rich, not for those that want to live happily
In the age of "free range" chickens, let's box in humans, One giant step for mankind. Isn't progress wonderful.
Ikr
I suppose that first guy's apt is fine if he intends to be single forever. Can't imagine trying to start a family like that.
The age of ownership for HK citizens ended when there was an influx of mainland money.
How will they get married and have children in the condition like that.🤔
People in the United States just don’t understand how blessed our country is. If a house or living situation is too expensive we have the luxury to get a cheaper home further away from the city. People in Hong Kong will never have that luxury.
Be happy for what you have not get mad for what you dont have
