Originally one of the three titles available when Sega first launched the Mega Drive, Super Thunder Blade is console-only sequel to the Thunder Blade arcade game. Famous for it's fancy arcade cabinet in the style of a helicopter cockpit and blessed with the "superscalar" technology, Sega were keen to demonstrate that their new console could deliver similar experiences in the home.
As a hotshot pilot, you must take control of an attack chopper and fly a series of missions against heavily-armed guerillas across a number of theatres.
Although quite similar to Afterburner, Super Thunder Blade tries to differentiate itself by splitting the gameplay between 3D third-person and 2D overhead sections more in common with vertical shoot 'em ups (e.g. Raiden).
Your chopper is equipped with both rapid-fire cannons and heat-seeking missiles, the mechanics of which vary between third-person and over-head sections. During the third-person sections the cannons can be used to shoot tanks or airborne enemies directly in front of the player's chopper, whilst the missiles will automatically home in on the next available hostile target. During the over-head sections, both cannons and missiles are used to strafe targets on the ground below you and the missiles no longer home in on enemies.
It's fair to say that the sprite processing and scaling of the Mega Drive is quite impressive during the 3D flying sections, although it does suffer from slow-down when things get busy. Enemy gunships and tanks appear on the horizon and fire salvoes of hot lead in your direction, so it's imperative to keep moving at all times whilst returning fire. To complicate matters, all manner of obstacles litter the scenery, meaning that the player must be agile enough to dodge enemy fire without colliding with a skyscraper or cliff-face.
Eventually, you will face off against a mid-level boss that must be destroyed in order to progress. While the bosses might look fierce, all that really is required to beat them is to fly in large circles to avoid their fire whilst relying on your heat seekers to destroy them.
Once beaten, there will be another short 3D flying section before the perspective flips to top-down mode. The objective here is to destroy as many stationary targets on the ground as possible whilst not getting shot down - all that really changes here is that the tactic of flying around in circles is replaced by flying side-to-side.
It's fair to say that these sections are undoubtedly the weakest parts of the game and are particularly bland when compared to the 3D sections. The only targets here are static, ground-based launchers that fill the skies full of flak making your chances of survival particularly slim.
Although Super Thunder Blade shares much in common with After Burner and Space Harrier, it's the game I like the least out of the three. One expects a game based on a coin-op to be tough, but the sluggish performance and treacle-like inertia of the chopper's handling means that navigating a safe path through the obstacles whilst avoiding enemy fire can become overwhelming at times.
Ultimately, the biggest problem with Super Thunder Blade isn't that it's a bad game, just that there are many other games that are simply more fun to play.

Level 2 with the dessert and columns is where I’d always die
It's desert...[dessert] you eat.
@@mshayashi jokes on you! The hidden level 2 with salted cameral cheesecake and columns of syrup. Everyone knows about the dessert level 🙄
Level two is way harder than 1 and 3. Don’t know about 4 yet. Barely tried it. But on two I found that if you stick as far off to the left as you can in the caves you can avoid all shots and pillars by moving up and down with the correct timing. Cave 1 and two are the hardest after that you can basically wait until you see the shots before you move.
Hover before entrance and exit out of them caves and circle clockwise.
Another helpful tip is to change players from 3 to 7 in options. Players=lives
1:00 I got used to hearing thst death music many many times as a kid. Man this brings back memories
i will just say child hood many rages
All those memories ! I used to play on master system version, the ost is just awesome. Thanks for this gameplay !
I remember this, enjoyed the music probably more than the gameplay
I thought i was the only one😂❤
This is one of the first video games I ever played in my life. Since it belonged to a kindergarten friend, I got to play it only very briefly.
We never made it past the first level.
Break out the super barf bags because soon this classic might make you super chunder!!!
Used to be one of my all time favourite games :)
great game but it was just too difficult and considering it is an arcade game, it should be fun and accessible first, difficult and all those cheap deaths second.
On the contrary, arcade games are designed to make you insert one more coin, that's why they are purposefully hard to survive.
I rember my cousin had this i was like 6 and always died
Super Thunder Blade Longplay (Mega Drive) [50 FPS]: Not a classic, but there is some chopper shooting fun to be had in this coin-op conversion by Sega.
Read the video description for my review!
It took me this video in 2020 to realize most of the sounbites are the same used in ghouls and goblins.
Is this port completely missing the top-down view zoomable first sections of each level, like the arcade has you flying ABOVE the building tops and you can zoom in closer to the ground? That's like HALF the game missing, the coolest part of the arcade original! (The PC Engine/TurboGrafx port included it, as well as the Amiga and even Sega Master System, I think...)
I know what ut talking about but back in the day home consoles didn't have enough power or storage as the arcade versions... I think 😪
Feeling nostalgic and out of nowhere choose to watch this game i had.
Just learn that it actually has a brake °_° '
Not sure if underground cavern or last city, but flying topleft let you pass through all level obstacles, kind of glitch.
A Blue Thunder Movie?
First level you could just stay in the top corner all the way through without dying.
You can? What corner left or right?
@@harrihaffi2713 top left
@@lucagubernati4695 I have my doubts, but I might try that.
Man I could never finish this game xD
Does the player die in Stage 1 just to show off the Game Over screen and music? I think so.
That was just the demo wasn’t it. Hence no score!
I remember raging on this game because i can't pass the first level
Get past level one by moving in circles counter clockwise. Just keep the circle between them building. Works with mid-boss as well.
Or clockwise circling, but I think counterclockwise is more effective.
Endboss never move to end of screen and when facing single turrets stand still until they shot then move a little to place them into your aim.
Harder on the last part of the ship. Long sweeps with correct timing does the trick. No need to destroy everything thing.
I usually don’t use the hover button on level one at all. If you focus fire on mid-boss turret you can kill it before it shots the second shiny shot. Saving you time to get a million points bonus when you get under 4 min time.
@@harrihaffi2713 thanks a lot for the tip man
I did replayed this game couple months after i wrote my comment and its quite easy. Maybe my 5 year old self isn't ready to play back then lol
@@QTG128 Easy? Beaten it already?
@@harrihaffi2713 not really.
What i mean is that its much easier playing it present day compared to when i first played it
@@QTG128 Ah so passed level one?
I was super addicted to this game when I was a kid, but fook me was it difficult, 9 times in 10 I'd die by the second level lol, tbh the game is too difficult and would be much better if it had an easier difficulty mode, maybe there is a cheat code or setting if you play it via an emulator.
Tried changing difficulty from medium to easy. Seems to actually make the game harder.
Level one boss turret target you off screen on easy. On medium you can just deal with the turrets on one side first half of the boss.
I get 1,500,000 pts on the first level (in sonic collection) so I can unlock Space Harrier
Cool!
Ps2?
These are some of the worst sfx I’ve ever heard on the console. 16:25 is EXTREMELY ear grating. (The framerate in said segment is also laughably bad as well)
27:28
This game is too easy, and yet boredom must be part of its difficulty. I can easily get through anything the game throws at me, I just can't be bothered to sit infront of the emulator for that long.
this game is too easy!! haha what a joke. you couldnt pass the first level loll. stop say stupid things
This looks terrible, even for its age
Bare in mind this was the first title for the system.
Didn't like this game at all, one of Sega's worst games.
why did you not like it?
did you not like the Thunder Blade arcade game or the ports (versions)?
this game had less complexity than most simple appstore games. It beats flappybird though.
Still, I cant ever not love this game for how cool it was when I was like 5 years old.
It was fuckin crap
Haven’t been a big fan of it myself, but started competing with a friend for the high scores and now I’m pretty into it.
Absolute shite this game was
Not even 1% as good as the arcade version, the explosions sound like a bad case of backdoor trot
Cheater. 😏
