Knew this was going to happen. I seem to have triggered some of you in the comments section by passionately arguing my points and disagreeing with my friends here. I think many of you guys would perfer if I just didnt react at all to their inverse opinions and instead reply very quietly and without face expressions, "I disagree respectfully. I didnt see it that way." I think some of it is me playing it up for camera and entertainments sake so you guys can participate in a vs. Who is right thing. But I wont do that anymore. From this point on I'll just let's everyone fully explain their positions and simply say I disagree. All within reason, often I'll still need to cut discussion short to avoid 2 hour reviews which we dont want to get into, so you guys can continue to complain about me cutting people off if you like but, no more "cringey" trying to convince my friends to like it more. Or playing up a versus angle. We will make this show as clean, sanitary, and respectful as possible so no ones feelings can be hurt watching us argue anymore. Basically no more arguements as our audience cant handle it.

I wonder if Alex has read or listened to the original story?
I mean they are a dysfunctional family... and they have already been drinking the water for at least a few days by the time shit really begins to ramp up. They have the color within them already early on but we dun really understand it's danger until LATER and by then some in the audience might have forgotten the fact she's literally been drinking diluted other-dimensional color-entity that twists and mutates just by being near it... and tends to make it 'better' and more adapted to survival. Just recall the mother and son fusion thing... initially it's just a twitching mutant-creatures that can barely move. later in the attic, it's been further affected to the point of moving around EFFECTIVELY.

You can choose to interpret it that way. I believe it was all coincidence. The color didn't come because it was called. The Gardner's happened to be where it landed. It's an entity that acts for itself. The farm was just food. Then it left when it had finished its meal. That's what makes Lovecraft terrifying, the knowledge of how small and insignificant you are when compared to true cosmic forces. The color likely didn't care about the difference between the mother and son it fused together and the mass of screaming alpaca. I just finished watching this movie, and it was fantastic. If you have not, please watch it, it's very worth it. I took my friends who are not into all of this weird horror and they were blown away with what they saw. However, I would like to point out some things Alex criticized about this movie that he is wrong about (SPOILERS):
    1. The narrator never drank the water, he was about to but he never took a sip. I dont know why Alex thinks he did, nobody who was with me saw him drink the water.
    2. The sister prayed to otherworldly beings to get herself out of there, and in the end of the movie, her wish does get granted as the color does teleport her out of the farm (though it's to the other planet). Staying true to lovecraft's stories, its a sort of "be careful what you wish for" kind of deal when doing these rituals, where your wish may be granted but not with what you are hoping for because these beings are indifferent to our needs and wants. And throughout the whole movie she does seem to be protected by what she did since the mother creature took very long to eat her when she had the chance, allowing her to be saved in time. Basically, she did have some sort of protection throughout the movie, which is why she survived and ultimately had her wish "granted."
Alex is wrong in both of his points against this movie, and it's fine if he did not like the movie as much as joe did, but the "problems" that he pointed out that brought down his score are simply things he just failed to realize. I agree with Joe's rating and I would rate this movie at least an 8/10. I hope this movie does well enough so we could see more lovecraft adaptations in the future.

    • @Hoi4o
      @Hoi4o 4 роки тому +6

@@Cyba_IT I think the weird relationships and pacing between the family were intentional. They were a family in financial and emotional trouble, as we clearly saw in their interactions, also the mom being in recovery from cancer, the whole alpaca breeding deal and the "family dinner" scene. This was clearly not a happy, stable and careless family, they had some serious struggles and problems. The cosmic creatures and the color out of space don't care about any of that though, and I think this disconnection between the human problems human beings have and these otherworldly events was portrayed very well.

Was the mom monster actually trying to eat her tho? It appeared to me more like it was trying to communicate into the girls face. It didn't throw her around, didnt bite her or start ripping into her, just hovered above her screaming into her face.
It was not an angry 'creature' the family were just collateral damage from a multi dimensional peg stuck in a square hole.

memo austin The movie was great. But wasn’t exactly true to form for lovecrafts brand of writing. In the book there was no Thing mutations, other that the corpses shriving up and glowing the color. It also takes away my favorite moment, when the neighbor goes to check up on the father and finds the wife in the attic, he describes it in a way that leaves it up to the imagination of what her corpse looks like, all he tells us is the room sticks and what he sees fills him with terror, so much that he closes and locks the door and vows never to speak of what he saw ever again to anyone.
But despite that I liked it, it kept true to many themes.

I loved this movie. Lovecraft stories seldom get adapted because of the concept. Most boring horror movies follow a very stale formula of figure out the monster or entity, figure out how to stop it, and execute. Lovecraft cosmic horror is that there are things in the universe that are so beyond your comprehension that they will drive you to complete madness. The good guys don't always win, and that is what is supposed to frighten you. The fact that there is no control over the situation. Few directors ever even grasp this concept, nor do these films ever succeed. The closest has been John Carpenter with The Thing, In The Mouth of Madness, and Prince of Darkness. Those movies are great, but all of them flopped. Director Richard Stanley hit the Lovecraft concept out of the park with this one. Stanley also directed Hardware, one of my favorite Cyberpunk movies ever made. He is very capable of showing the audience a lot with a very low budget. Like many talented indie directors, the hollywood machine chewed him up and spat him out, as he was fired from the atrocious Island of Doctor Moreau.
I loved this movie a lot. It's the first horror movie I've seen this year that didn't absolutely suck. Lovecraft horror is about what your not supposed to know, and what your not supposed to see. That human beings are far less significant in this universe than they think they are. It's not about stopping the monster and winning. Lovecraft is not for everyone.
Alex, and Other Joe represent those of a large population who don't like that concept, which is why this movie didn't get a mainstream release, and also why we don't get more Lovecraft horror movies. This is not meant as a dig, it's just me calling it for what it is. I hope Richard Stanley makes more movies like this!

I think throughout this series they all made great points on the movies they watched and proofed that all their opinions are valid and that they all know a bit about movies in general. And Joe should not think of himself as one of those deep movie buffs who discus the philosophy behind Tharkovski, Bergmann or Fellini movies or the directorial qualities of Jodorowsky compared to Pasolini. Hey @AngryJoeShow, I'm glad you got around to watching this movie, and especially that you also liked it so much! It's a shame it wasn't marketed better and available in more theaters. I can see where OJ and Alex were coming from with some of their complaints, but I think a second viewing really helps to clear up a lot of those (in my case, the first time I saw it, I missed a lot of lines of dialogue; the second time through I paid more attention so I can catch all the things I missed the first time). For example, per Alex's complaint about the hydrologist drinking the water but not being affected... He actually didn't drink the water. There was a scene in the shack where he was handed a glass of water, but was put off by the color so he brought it really close to his face to smell it. He mentions not being able to smell anything but he could test it to be sure; later that night you can see him testing the water in his tent with one of little strips of paper with some chemicals on it and the paper reacts by turning into a spectrum of bright, pinkish colors (reminiscent of the meteorite). It's after this that he starts telling everyone not to drink the water. :)
    Edit:
Oh, I also caught a special showing with a Q and A with Richard Stanley and Nick Cage after the movie. Richard Stanley is apparently looking to make a trilogy of Lovecraft movies. I don't remember exactly which he said would be the next movie, but I think it might've been The Dunwich Horror.

The characters seemed to be trying to fight against this need, but were never able to. I was SOO with joe the whole time, i love the heated debate tho, very entertaining!
i can understand why some people might not like it or find some inconsistencies in character motivation.... but the characters are going crazy throughout the movie, so what some people may think is bad writing or acting, is actually in my opinion done on purpose to create the sense of madness and hopelessness.
    "why didnt they DO anything?"
    "what CAN you do?"
i think a perfect example of this in the movie is when the brother asks Levinia "should we warn him?" (Nick Cage)
    and Levinia responds "about what?"
the villain these characters are up against is so far out of the realm of reality that they dont know how to even talk about it

Rather, it is an extraspectral color, that is only perceived by humans in a specific interaction of the optical rods in the eyes that detect Red & Blue in specific circumstances to create the Magenta in the mind. Since Red & Blue are associated to Evil & Good, it means that The Color is apart from Evil & Good to come from another universe where these concepts cannot be applied. The color code for Magenta is: RGB (Red-Green-Blue) 300, 100, 100; HSB (Hue-Saturation-Brightness) 255, 0, 255." - from IMDb Trivia section

So after reading the comments and someone point out the daughter is named Lavinia who shares the same name as Lavinia Whateley of The Dunwich Horror, and that the next planned movie is confirmed to be The Dunwich Horror, I say that shows there will be a connected cinematic universe in this trilogy. I sort of want to see the climax again to see if there’s any signs of spheres to see if she had a connection to Yog-Sothoth. Her having a copy of the necronomicon could also be a tie-in, since the necronomicon plays a big role in The Dunwich Horror.

Meh, don't change Joe, you're not "I Pleasantly Disagree Joe", you're ANGRY JOE!
"Color Out Of Space" was a blast. Loved it. Cage's performance in "Mandy" got laughs too from the premiere I was at, even though I found his breakdown in "Mandy" very sad/heartbreaking and not funny at all - and in COoS, he slowly deteriorates into his abusive fathers insecurities which I thought was clear, not just over the top Cage for campy effect. I agree that Lavenia was taking part in her family's demise along with the Color. None of them were gonna be allowed to leave, not in their human form at least.

The one thing that I found disappointing was that Ward (the narrator) was sane at the end of the film. One thing that is consistent in most Lovecraft movies is that they are narrated by someone who survived the events, and is left mentally destroyed by the experience. These aren't the kind of events that the human mind can just recover from, that's the point, you either die or succumb to the madness. That said, this is the kind of 80's-style horror that I desperately miss, and it's a crime that the first real Lovecraft film in years only got a limited release.

  • @UberWraith
    @UberWraith 4 роки тому

I haven't seen the movie but I can speak of the original short story about some of those apparent inconsistencies:
    - the original story has TWO narrators: one is a character who never encountered the Colour, while the other was a neighbour of the family who witnessed the whole event in the past. And the first narrator slightly implies that the neighbour could have been infected, too
    - the whole point of the 'family doesn't leave' in the story was exactly because they could not. The Colour, through its 'infection', compelled them to stay there. They wanted to leave... but had no strength to do it. And it's one of the reasons why it's implied that the neighbour never left the land too
    - the Colour was effectively 'physical', it was a viscous, plasma-like 'thing' that was inside the meteor. He seeped into the ground, contaminated the water and basically terraformed the whole farm to become its own food reservoir - living beings included
    - in the end, the Colour gathers all its fluids and 'shoots itself' to the stars, leaving Earth.
...but the neighbour thinks that he glimpsed a small globule falling back to the ground, not being able to merge with the whole mass which was leaving. Or maybe it was only a false impression ? We as readers never know.
One thing I know about the movie however is that the girl was called Lavinia. Why is this important - or at least a GREAT easter egg ? Well, one of the most famous Lovecraft's short stories is 'The Dunwich Horror' which basically tells of a sorcerer, called Whateley, who summons the deity Yog-Sothoth and makes his daughter being impregnated by him, giving birth to two... beings. Of course the Necronomicon was involved. What was the name of the Whateley girl ? ...Lavinia.

And... i was thinking what if there was a deeper layer of meaning to the core actors in this movie ? what if each of them represent a deadly sin ? - Nicholas cage , Wrath because he get tick off by the smallest things
    - Eldest Son , Sloth because of the whole bummer/laziness
    - Lativia , Lust
    - Mom , Envy because she is not confident of herself like asking Nic Cage very early in the movie at this point why do you still like me etc
    - Young child , Glutonny, not really sure why maybe he eats anything ?
    - Erza (that hippy in the cabin) , Greed because of he is a hoarders
    - Hydrologist/Narrator, Pride because refuse to drink water lols
that just my personal thought maybe i overthink :P
