I found out the hard way not to mulch my cabbages! The slugs were hiding there is huge numbers. i also made the mistake one year of mulching my squash with hay, which squash beetles just 💕 . Live and learn....

Wow this makes a lot of sense! I will definitely be trying this out! Now that you say this I can’t think of one vineyard I’ve visited that had mulch on their vines…
I am glad I could help. Most of the vineyards I have visited use cover crops to keep the soil from eroding but nothing that creates a thick mulch layer. It’s interesting when things come together like this hey! Glad I could help !

Good information as always. I mulch heavily. I see now that it could be a contributing factor to pest issues.
It took me a few years to realize as well. I have enjoyed some good years after I made the change.

Like the rest, I'm so glad to see you posting again! Thank you and hope all is well. I'm in zone 8 in the rainforest of the Pacific NW, USA, and know well how slugs love to live in mulch! I do use hemlock or fir chips on my walkways between beds. The pieces are large and don't seem to harbor pests while doing a good job of weed suppression.
That’s interesting I live in an arid area and had not thought about pine needles.

Thanks for sharing. I have never seen a slug in my garden here in Zone 3 Saskatchewan. We have very dry sandy soil - so perhaps that's what keeps them away here.
It could be. I have them every year but now in much smaller numbers. Come to think of it family members with sandy soil don’t complain about slugs... that may be worth investigating more.

Removing the mulch like I said in the clip but then horticultural oil slows them down a lot. I’ll do my treatment here now that they are leafing out.

I love your channel. Glad to see you back. Do you find a difference between wood chip mulch and the more easily decomposable mulch you show in this video?
Just the speed of decomposition and soil qualities. Woodchip breaks down slower but makes better water absorbent soil but the faster ones make good structure.

I've cut back on mulch in years past. Although living in a hotter zone 8b now, I've tried to have larger plants to keep the soil moist by the time June and hotter months arrive. I'll see if it works this year, my first full garden year here.

problen with bad bugs in mulched areas is only a lack of predatory amphibians and bird population
I regrettably mulched my garden bed here in Lethbridge and it just blew all over my yard. :(
That Lethbridge wind is hard to fight with !
Should I still use grass cuttings or straw mulch for annual plants? Many of my garden patches have perennial and annual plants mixed together.
It's better to make a compost pile out of them, or mulch after the growing season is over and let it break down into compost over the winter. Mulching during growing season for me just create more hiding places for pests and slugs.
How do you keep your wood shavings from blowing all over the neighborhood? I don’t have a problem with sawdust or chips, but my shavings get everywhere.
I spray them down with the hose after and for the most part I don’t seem to have a dust problem after.
Is mulching good for poppy plants I've had a real hard time since I've mulched and I seen somewhere on the internet that said it was good and since then I've had a real problem with them even growing!??!
I would not mulch them. Poppies are annuals and their seeds are fairly small and if you mulch as I mentioned it will be hard for them to germinate.

Yes I do used them some times. I don’t do it a whole lot as they tend to come with a fair bit of weed seeds in there.
Good to know as i have 2 young grapes vines , an established apple tree and a patch of asparagus. I found a lot of stink bugs trying to hide under my soil after I took out my tomatoes and corn - 2 crops the stink bugs loved the most last year. Do you know any predators of stink bugs and other life cycle tips on them? Thanks.
I have had stink bugs but I don't remember off hand what hunts them. That said I have not had issues with them since the early days of my garden. I bet a google scholar search will help you figure out what hunts them and then all you have to do is make your yard an inviting place.
Parasitoid wasps are a welcome pest predator in my gardens. Make nice homes for them and you should see a reduction in stinkbug and other nuisance populations.
Your practices in your current videos go so against how nature works. Your practices are not some that I will be following.
That is completely up to you my friend. I have never claimed to be an expert rather I wanted to share my experiences in the garden. If it works for you that is great!

I wonder if you took the mulch away from day half of your perennials to see how they do vs. The other half
