I just picked up an original vinyl DJ stamped pressing of the Columbia Records' subsidiary Epic Records album "This is Damita Jo," which features "Silver Dollar." Damita Jo does an absolutely brillant scat singing performance on "Love Is Here To Stay" which would have made Ella and Sarah both jealous. And the opening lp number "I Had Someone Else Before I Had You" lets you know she is one hellava chck. Was Damita Jo too beautiful or too talented that her career did not shoot her to superstardom?
INCREDIBLE POP SOUNDING VOICE. I'M SURPRISED HER CAREER NEVER WENT FURTHER LIKE THAT OF BARBARA MCNAIR OR LESLIE UGGAMS. SHE IS DEFINITELY LAS VEGAS MATERIAL, PERFORMING AT THE SANDS AND OTHER VENUES.
Well' here I go again asking: what year was this song? I saved this video on my favorites. Ever hear of "Hanna Ahroni" she sings the song - "Padam Padam", that video looks like the same era as this song. She's an Israeli Singer and Beautiful too.
Damita Jo would probably be the favorite female singer of Ms Janet Jackson, I believe, since JJ's full name is Janet Damita Jo Jackson (according to Wikipedia). Anyway, both ladies are gorgeous!
Good question, some singers should be superstars and just never became that popular - never had a hit, bad management, extremely bad luck with record companies, etc. Case in point: the great New Orelans singer Johnny Adams. Ever heard of him? Proves the point my friend. Check "A losing battle" sometime, it will blow you away.
Saw this on a Scopitone video juke box in Surfers Paradise, Australia in the latter part of the 60's. I was but a War Baby in "Oz." Damita Jo's Mercury tunes charted better in "Oz" than the U.S. "Dance With a Dolly" failed everywhere but Sweden where it hit. '
Not only that, but a black woman singing "Sinatra without the clan" I mean, we know it's the rat pack and all, but sheesh Mr. Lyricist, that changes the whole tone of the song and it stops the song dead right there. Which is too bad, because Damita Jo is running on all cylinders here! And she's got a swinging band too. Love the obligatory Scopitone bikini shot on the "bride" too. And Damita Jo is surely easy on the eyes! And a good singer.
Sure, there have been lost of misogynistic tunes over the years, but this is one of the bigger offenders. Oh well, doesn't change the fact that she was a helluva singer.
I just love Damita Jo's energy and pep! She can really lift you up; this is very nice; thanks!
She had an astounding voice.
This is one of my favorite Scopitones! Damita Jo is fantastic - look up some of her albums - they're terrific!
What a lovely lady with a lovely voice

Damita Jo was the total package! They don't make 'em like they used to. What year was this video?
the black guy was one of the ernie flatt dancers on the carol burnett show .. he was the short cute black guy with the afro ...

Her version of Yellow Days is definitive.
You're right about it never "really" being a hit. It hit #150 in Music Vendor, April '65. The cutting edge of statistical oblivion.
What a Crackin Song

Well that would be Katherine Jackson's favorite singer. Janet was named after her.
KATRINA JACKSON LIKES DAMITA JO, SO SHE NAMED JANET JACKSON(JANET DAMITA JO JACKSON). WHAT A FAN.
