In this video I discuss and compare the original 1956 Longines Conquest Calendar and its modern day Heritage Limited edition version. I will go through everything between both versions and give you my unbiased opinion between them.

The heritage Longines that I have in this video is the "unlimited" version which you can still buy on the Longines website or from their authorized dealer. The "limited" edition launched in 2014 does not have the calendar feature and is no longer available.

I laugh when people say modern longines has dropped in quality since its "glory days".. I just ask "ok, how so?" Truth is they havent, folks just dont like that they are part of swatch group or a couple design choices. The movements are competitive with with $5-$7k watches for half the price, especially the L888 movements. Not to mention their finishing is on par with anything. Longines can sit in any room and demand respect.

it's definitely dropped in quality, during longines' heydays it made better chronos than patek and their main product line was on par with rolex and omega, now it's playing the volume game for swatch with only a few decent pieces that are mostly reissues.
@@my2lI think the OP is right and it’s more a case that *relative* to the other brands you mentioned, Longines hasn’t leaned into the higher end luxury market. This disproportionate increase in quality and price for Omega and Rolex has only really taken place in the last 20 years. Less than 20 years ago you could still buy Rolex watches new which still came equipped with stamped steel clasps (rather than milled) and hollow end links. I believe this was still the case as recently as 15 years ago for some models. This is just one example but I could go on.
My grandfather had since 1956 a Longines Conquest gold case 35mm. I few years ago I bought the reissue but with stainless steel case. Beautiful dress watch and very good and accurate movement. Great video and thanks for sharing.
I own the 35mm heritage and I’ve got to say it’s fantastic. One of the few examples that I prefer the modern one and that for the thickness, usually they do the opposite with reissues , bigger and thicker watches. One of the classiest modern offerings for a refined gentleman that wears right sized dress watches

this piece is a masterwork of a heritage model. longines generally has brought the art of heritage models to perfection, and i love almost every heritage model they offer. but in this case, i like the heritage model even more than the original (which still remains a stunning watch). i like the rounded case "edge" and the date window at 12 (although 6 would be fine aswell, just more symmetric than 3). i own this and the flagship heritage and theyre by far the most beautiful watches in my collection although not the most hardwearing ones (when compared to divers and such). dont want to miss them!

I like the vintage but in all honesty these are both timeless pieces and a piece I’ve been meaning to get but have been buying to many tudors. Longines is one of my favourite watch maker. Their heritage line is gorgeous, must admit I enjoy it more than some of their current release watches. I wish they would release another gold edition.

Great video. I love that your channel puts out this sort of original content about vintage watches and fairly accurate reissues which are otherwise neglected.
I have the black dial reissue version of this. I think they represent excellent value on the used market, here in the UK at any rate.
The 12 o'clock date and the fact it's white takes some getting used to, but I have made my peace with it for the following reasons. 1. A date window was a major selling point for the vintage watches which inspired the reissue and the prominence of the date at 12 Highlights that. 2. Those vintage watches were practical things to be worn and a white date window is far more legible than a black one.
Sure, I'm justifying my purchase, but thus have I overcome the watch forum programming of "black dial + white date window always = bad". And I can now enjoy the absolutely spectacular hands, dial and indices of the reissue. The case also gives the lie to the idea that you can't produce a slim watch with the "thick and agricultural" ETA 2824-2. Watchfinder have a b-roll only video of the black dial reissue and it looks absolutely spectacular. I imagine they planned to do a full feature but decided against.
Entertainingly, I see that the new retail price of the vintage-appropriately-sized 35mm version with acrylic crystal is half that of the oversized 40mm (in my view) monstrosity with sapphire. For once watch pricing works in favour of those who appreciate classic size and style!

The vintage version is hard to find in great shape.
Caliber 2824-2 is a fantastic movement. Many watch companies uses this caliber, including high quality fake Rolexes!
Nice job. Let me suggest that when you put up the photos of a watch on your wrist you also provide on screen your wrist circumference on screen - even through you "say" it earlier, having the numbers on screen is helpful for those more visually inclined. Good job. Keep at it!

Great video, What are your thoughts on Orient and Seiko movements compared to ETA 2892 and 2824?
Thank you! Honestly, I've not worked on many Seiko or Orient movements for a very long time and not very many in my lifetime. From what I can tell you is the Seiko 5 movements are average such as the 7s26 caliber. I've not work on their grand seiko caliber, but from looking at photos I can see they are very well made. ETA 2892 and 2824 are great calibers and quite fun to work on.
I like that they didn't just released the jumbo model, like Tissot did with PR516.
Or Omega with the 1948 heritage. I think the dial goes out of proportion that way.

That's a good question. Honestly, off the top of my head I do not recall any other 35mm or smaller in diameter watches that is made this way.

The simplest approach is not to have a calendar on the watch. All my vintage Omega have no calendar. Most of the people today are carrying a cell phone. I like just setting the watch and wind it and go. And for my two automatic Omegas just set shake and go. I love vintage omegas
Personal preferences I guess. A lot of clients do depend on the calendar feature on their watches a lot.

Hey! Sorry for the delay. Honestly, I would say many bracelets would work great on this watch. But personally, since this is a heritage watch, it would make sense to fit with a vintage style bracelet. Modern style bracelet may appear too broad or not that good match.

It's a special ranch made for this specific case back. There are many different brands and sizes. Need to find the right one to get the proper job done. Jaxa tool can be use too, but you will need to be extra careful from slipping.

I love the modern re-issue and the fact that it is one of the few dress watches available, period, in a 35mm case size. I wish, however, that the hour markers were either smaller in size, or a different colour than gold, so as not to overtake the dial so much. Otherwise, an excellent piece.
The conquest is 40mm
The Flagship Heritage is worth a look. There's black and champagne dial versions. But based on your comment about 35mm, the 38.5mm case might be too large for you. Give it a try though!
Does it scratch easily?
Junghans Max Bill line was my other go to for modern, smaller (about 34mm-36mm) dress watches with acrylic crystals.
I would love to know how accurate vintage movements were when they were new, and how they run now. Are there any affordable vintage watches with good movements. I particularly like watches with slim cases.
I do not not know exactly. But I have bought watches that still retain its original accuracy test result. They are pretty accurate (averaging +1 to +5 sec off per day). I would say this reading does not apply to all vintage watch movements. But it is possible that a vintage watch nowadays after a proper service can be just as precise as it was brand new.

@@olafpayne Sorry, I did not see this message until now. I currently have one Omega Seamaster in my collection which has its original testing result certificate. On the certificate it shows the year (1952) it was tested and 15 consecutive days of test results. They are, +8, -3, -6, +1, +3, +4, -1, 0, +6, +10, +6, +10, +8, -3, -2
Hi! Please respond. I got the newer version yesterday. Is it expected to be a quite noisey watch? As in when on my wrist when its moving i can hear a rattle, almost feels like something is loose.
I have other auto watches that make some noise but this is quite louder and more rattly
Is your watch brand new or second hand?
My rotor is a bit noisy. I think it’s expected and not a fault.

I have an original Conquest Calendar which was my grandfathers old watch, the gold capped version. Do you know when these were made to & from? I had read it was 1954 to 1959 but wanted to check.
You can access information about the exact dates from Longines directly.
It's still free of charge which is pretty much unheard of in the watch industry. :)

To find out the age of your watch you'll first need to open up the case back and find out the movement serial number. With that number, you can search online or let me know and I'll be able to tell you the closest estimate as to what year your watch is. However, if you would like to know the exact year, day, month and which country it was delivered to. You'll need to provide this serial number to Longines and have them provide you the Extract of archive. It should be free of cost as of today.
@@Andrew.W75 And the most wonderful thing is that Longines - though belonging to the all mighty Swatch Group now - has the written records of sales from the old days. So if you have a Longines pocket watch from the late 1800's they'll be able to help you out just as well with a vintage wristwatch of theirs.

Does the exalite scratches easily?
The crystal? It will be the same as the vintage version. But you can always use "polywatch" to remove any light scratches easily. At the end of the day, scratches are built depending on how rough you are with your watch.

Price of the 1954 piece unfortunately, I do not not. For the price of the re-issue, it changes a slight bit I believe throughout each year. You can always check on their site.
