So, after the previous episode, I've decided that my role in your One Piece reactions will be to provide some extra fun facts. First off, in the manga, Zoro and Kuina's backstory were revealed to us way back when Luffy got Zoro's swords during the arc with Captain Morgan, i.e. when Zoro was first introduced. It makes sense why they'd delay it in the anime, seeing as they wanted to introduce Nami as quickly as possible, and given that they'd already delayed Luffy's backstory and the loss of Shanks's arm (for context, this was how the manga had started, showing Luffy as a kid before we ever saw him as the mostly grown dude he started the anime as). I figure this was a pretty good time to show Zoro's backstory, given that this same episode introduces us to Yosaku and Johnny, characters who are explicitly from Zoro's past. Second off, the main cause of scurvy is a deficiency in Vitamin C. Consuming citrus fruits regularly, like the one Nami gives Yosaku, is a good way of staving off/treating scurvy. Unfortunately, when you're at sea for a long voyage, fruit tends to go bad quickly, which is why scurvy is so heavily associated with pirates and sailors. Realistically, someone with scurvy wouldn't recover as quickly as Yosaku briefly had, but that's kinda the joke. Now for Baratie! You questioned whether restaurants at sea really exist. Well, not only are they real, underwater restaurants are real. Not only that, there was an actual Baratie, based on the one that the Going Merry just arrived at. Unfortunately, the Baratie is permanently closed nowadays. You were impressed that even the chefs could fight; keep in mind that Baratie isn't just a restaurant. It's a restaurant at sea, one that regularly caters to tough sailors like Fullbody. In the Golden Age of Pirates, it's important that a business that operates at sea should have some ability to defend themselves. Lastly, on a minor personal note, I was so fascinated when I first saw Luffy and Usopp practicing with the cannon. It only took one look at how Luffy used it for Usopp to figure it out, which is cool but also makes sense; Usopp uses a slingshot regularly, so he's developed a lot of skill at working with projectile weapons as a whole.
Yeah as a manga reader I was wo wondering why they hadn't shown it yet but I guess this makes sense, considering Zoro's motivations are kinda important later in this arc
I have no complains about this, but when you said the Baratie is closed nowadays kind of just spoiled the anime for him if he read it. Because that has to do with WholeCake island.
Erufailon4 I started reading the manga. The quality and story telling is way better. But there is no sound and changing of facial expressions. And sometimes as a new manga reader it is hard to read some pages that are overly exaggerated. The sounds are crucial for the feels. I think they are. The manga drawing looks way better and the plot is easier to understand.
as others said, scurvy is a debilitating illness sailors suffer due to not having any vitamin C (oranges, limes, any citrus fruit are packed with them). Though Yosaku suddenly feeling better is just anime logic, and him keeling over again is just ajoke about how he honestly WOULDN'T just instantly get better, it'd take him a bit of time to heal.
"They go hard on these characters with their pasts." *chuckles in 800+ episodes* As for even the cooks knowing how to cook: To be fair, it IS a floating restaurant. In a world full of pirates. You pretty much have to have some kind of fighting ability to not get everything stolen from you. XD
@@Fenronin I'd doubt that, he was hated by the village cuz of his constant pranks, plus there would've been no one to stop Kuro if Usopp and the gang haven't met.
there are theories about kuina surviving (since her dead is kinda random for an anime), but in the manga we saw her dead body so yeah shes dead^^ oh and zoro didnt go there to take over the dojo. in the manga he was just there. We dont really know why. maybe its his hometown and he is just a normal pupil there. they just added that to the anime to reach the needed time for the episode.
Yes, every member that joins the crew has a sad backstory. Trust me when I say this, keep tissues nearby. You never know when you're going to need them.
Baratie, the Fighting Cook Restaurant! As for the bug, remember that they are using sail ships. Travel time isn't really shown much in the anime or manga, but it can take weeks to get to the next island. The ships out there quite literally can't afford to waste food.
"I can't even imagine what's going to happen" You're not alone, nobody but Oda could come up with this shit. He's truly a master of storytelling, especially considering how long it is and he just keeps 1 upping himself with every arc.
Just a heads up. The "dark backrounds" are just snippets of a characters life. Oda likes to show you the lowest points of a character. Doing this helps the viewer understand their motivation and reasoning, It helps create a deeper and more fleshed out character and makes the series have greater worldbuilding than e.g Sword art online :3. Which ultimately leads to better storytelling and makes it more interesting for the viewer to have own thoughts and feelings at what is currently happening. So the "rough" snippets you see now will be important later in the series to help you understand why certain characters act as they do. So basically what I'm trying to say. Oda isn't trying to get you to feel bad for any characters. He tries to get you to understand their motivation and get a better connection with the character. It also plays a big roll in events to come. Zoros flashbacks may feel random, but you'll understand more about it as time goes on. Are people really that niave to think oda won't reveal more about their "origin stories" That includes brooks, nami, usopp, zoro, etc. Each straw hat is special in a way and there all tied to a greater legacy and history as part of the OP world.
One of the requirements to be one of the straw hats is to have a depressing backstory even some straw hats have their back stories extended hundreds of episodes later and also the cooks can fight because this is a restaurant on the sea if they can’t fight they will all get beat up by pirates and marines going there
The only thing that I could tell you without spoiling is. They are serving food in the middle of the ocean where pirates are commonly voyaging. So they should be prepared for possible raid
how zoro got where he got: he explains it in a kind of throwaway line in one of the earliest episodes: he got on a ship but got lost, so he had to start fighting and collecting bounties of pirates to have any money to kinda survive. thats why he was a "bounty hunter", and after that he just kinda went wherever till he got "captured" by helmeppo (captain morgans son). at least if i remember correctly :D
anyone else cry while watching him watch Zoro's past XD I totally started crying again, love this about One Piece no matter how many times I see it I still cry
Kuina's death apparently had something to do with some Japanese folk lore about some dude monster that kills little children when they do stuff or something. I don't quite remember, I learned about it a long time ago so I forga forgot
9:50 in the manga u can see wanokuni tompstones which creates a relation between the dojo and the loyalists from wano who lost the battle against kaido (under) 20 years ago. but before that u had seen the revolutionary army getting supply from the dojo too but zorry didnt notice since he was training . so to conclude beside kurinas grave there is a grave of Ivanknov who is still alive at this point but has the ability to change gender. so we are stil waiting for her to reapear
scurvy is a shortage of Vitamin C and its very dangerous. Symtoms are skin changes with roughness, easy bruising loosening of teeth, poor wound healing and so on.
I really love this episode because the origin of Zorro was pretty heartfelt and I kind of felt sorry for him, that was back when I was interested in one piece part of me wants to go back and re-watch it but it's over eight hundred episode that's going to be very hard to do at a whole lot of time.
Episode 18 is half cannon only because Usopp is there and Zoro is awake. In the manga that little bit happened right after they beat Buggy and it was just Luffy & Nami that were there because Zoro was still on the boat sleeping off the wound Buggy gave him. Episode 19 is also kind of half cannon because in the Manga the flashback happens earlier on in the story.
One thing to keep in mind with Zoro's past is in the manga, his story started at the dojo, it's only in the anime where he's seeking to beat dojos. I think they did that to further his character, but it may or may not be important to know for the current story.
Scurvy is a severe lack of vitamin C in the diet. Ships didn’t take fruits or vegetables with them in the past since they go bad fast. Which resulted in entire ships getting it. It can be fatal if it isn’t treated since we need vitamin C. The guy was just showing temporary signs of getting better.
A marine's job is to arrest pirates on sight. No ifs, ands or buts. If a pirate runs into a marine at ANY time, regardless of what they're doing, its a bad time.
Having read these parts of the manga over 20 years ago I enjoy witnessing our first one piece experience. Two pieces of advice: 1. Dont let yourself get spoiled 2. Skip the filler episodes
Waiting for the backstory bar to be reached. Well the one we all hold backstorys sadness level to. Though I think the best detail from any backstory was also sadly one changed in the anime and was different in the manga. I personally think THAT one detail in THAT one backstory was battery handled in the manga. I won't say who's backstory though.
Japanese people know the metaphor behind what that means. If a Japanese person tells you that someone they knew (especially a child) fell down some stairs, chances are the person committed suicide.
keep in mind the three sword style isn't an actual technique, its something zoro himself mad eup because he, as a child, thought 'more swords=stronger' as well as a way to hold onto Kuina's sword as a constant reminder of his goal. Zoro's smarter than Luffy, but he's still an idiot.
Something that was told to me that really changed my view on Zoro's backstory: apparently "falling down the stairs" can sometimes be used as a polite way to say that they committed suicide, due to how much stigma it has. It makes it a lot darker, and sadder as well, imo
Man I'm so excited for you for the coming episodes man you're gonna cry like a little girl and I'm gonna cry like a little girl again watching these epiosdes with you :"(
@Nio37 I just realsied that he had before allways fighting with 2 swords. And he also had 2 own, regular swords. To carry on Kuinas spirit he took her sword, but not to switch it up with one of his own swords. But to add kuinas 1swordstyle to his 2 swordstyle, kmaking it a quiet unique 3 swordstyle.

Also they are in the pirate era.. and a parallel universe where fruits give you supernatural powers and almost everyone is either a pirate or a marine or dreams to be one..so yeah..everybody can fight in one piece yeayyyyy.

Everyone's telling you to skip the fillers, I think you should watch them I'm 100% sure you'll enjoy them, they are so good that they don't feel like fillers at all. Oda has gift to make good stories and backstory even to a 3 second appearance character (like the Gumba guy).
I never read Zoro's training after Kuina's death as him getting stronger. I think it was all an outing of frustration; like he says in their confrontation, she was his goal. But his goal is gone now. He's training but he could beat everyone at the dojo save for Kuina, so now, he no longer (feels like he) has any way to check if he is actually improving.
Scurvy can happen when yo uhave vitamin C defficiency, vitamin C being found in lemons, oranges, and some vegetables and tomatoes people traveling by ship sometime had a lack of those in the old times before the disease was known

how zoro got where he got: he explains it in a kind of throwaway line in one of the earliest episodes: he got on a ship but got lost, so he had to start fighting and collecting bounties of pirates to have any money to kinda survive. thats why he was a "bounty hunter", and after that he just kinda went wherever till he got "captured" by helmeppo (captain morgans son). at least if i remember correctly :D
anyone else cry while watching him watch Zoro's past XD I totally started crying again, love this about One Piece no matter how many times I see it I still cry
Aj: "They all come from rough background"
- yes this anime has a lot of sad stories just prepare, no spoils. The feels are all real.
I know that AJ doesn't cry watching anime but by the end of Drum island he will be crying his eyes out
i want to see he cry
I'm just going to say this, you haven't seen Luffy's whole past yet you won't know it until a lot later.
*cries in sake cups*
No don't do that to me I can't *cries*
@@matthewpopow6647 *cries on fireboy being punched by lavaman*
LOL we have not even seen Luffy's whole past yet
Well i guess you can say we saw his past, but we certainly have not seen his whole "origin story" let alone many of the other straw hats.
I really love this episode because the origin of Zorro was pretty heartfelt and I kind of felt sorry for him, that was back when I was interested in one piece part of me wants to go back and re-watch it but it's over eight hundred episode that's going to be very hard to do at a whole lot of time.
A boat Restaurant. It's actually quite popular irl EVEN if you exclude Cruise Ships
The guy was just showing temporary signs of getting better.
im going to get strong enough that my name reaches to heaven... damn rewatching the series hit different
A marine's job is to arrest pirates on sight. No ifs, ands or buts. If a pirate runs into a marine at ANY time, regardless of what they're doing, its a bad time.
Yeah, something you'll recognise about all of the characters is that they usually if now always have dark, depressing pasts
The brilliance of PUSHING past acts or bad moments in childhood in stories
That random island with the woomba guy was canon in the manga haha
Having read these parts of the manga over 20 years ago I enjoy witnessing our first one piece experience.
Two pieces of advice:
1. Dont let yourself get spoiled
2. Skip the filler episodes
Scurvy is the lack of vitamin C. It caused the death of a lot of pirates back then. And now we have the last of the monster trio.
And here we are are still waiting for his full backstory!
14:25 Dang! I never realized Johnny Joestar was in onepiece! He looks kinda different though...
Slipped from the stairs? I feel like Oda is trying to hide something from us
Japanese people know the metaphor behind what that means. If a Japanese person tells you that someone they knew (especially a child) fell down some stairs, chances are the person committed suicide.
Remember what you said about lack of competition getting people bored. It...may come in handy soon ;)
The cooks at Baratie are seafaring cooks so they often get exposed to pirates, thats why they know how to fight !
" *ZORO'S BACK STORY IS SAD* "
Actually , he didn't have it that bad.
How cute.
Amongst the Strawhats, I think Zoro's background is the least sad.
keep in mind the three sword style isn't an actual technique, its something zoro himself mad eup because he, as a child, thought 'more swords=stronger' as well as a way to hold onto Kuina's sword as a constant reminder of his goal.
Zoro's smarter than Luffy, but he's still an idiot.
This show will make you cry at one point, no doubt about that.
I am a grown ass man and haven't cried in years till stuff happened in One Piece
Flashback scenes is one of the strengths of this anime.
Fun little fact: That bug got an official name from Oda, its Batchee, and he is offcially the weakest 'named' character in the story
The cooks have to know how to fight because it's rough in the sea. If they were raided by pirates, they gotta fight them.
the saddest death in one piece, Batchee died so young
The stairs are such a powerful force Kappa
Something that was told to me that really changed my view on Zoro's backstory: apparently "falling down the stairs" can sometimes be used as a polite way to say that they committed suicide, due to how much stigma it has. It makes it a lot darker, and sadder as well, imo
I just wished you could do more reactions. Your channel is so good
Man I'm so excited for you for the coming episodes man you're gonna cry like a little girl and I'm gonna cry like a little girl again watching these epiosdes with you :"(
ODA is master at telling sad back stories and one piece is full of them... ODA knows how to get his reader emotional
if you notice kuina's sword is the one he always put in the mouth
@Nio37 i think that shows how important that sword is to him
@Nio37 I just realsied that he had before allways fighting with 2 swords. And he also had 2 own, regular swords. To carry on Kuinas spirit he took her sword, but not to switch it up with one of his own swords. But to add kuinas 1swordstyle to his 2 swordstyle, kmaking it a quiet unique 3 swordstyle.
@@the_Haexler also more swords = stronger, and kuina = strong rival. What I'msaying is that Zoro fused with Kuina to become stronger.
U have to see Zoro right now!! I hope u continue watching... he's hella strong 💪🔥
One piece is a vast universe the amount of Story line and Flash backs are insane.. current Ep are 929 at the moment.. and I'm so glad I watched this Master piece.. it's like a part of my family now
Zoro backstory is so happy, he didn't even had to kill his friend
or eat them...
"they all come from a pretty rough backstory" oh boy you don't know , Luffy , Zoro and Usopp's bacstories are definitly the happiest backstories you'll see on this show :')
The toughest backstories are yet to come
People speculate that kuina probably commited suicide and her father is just hiding it cause it's disgraceful.
Aj: damn everyone has a cruel past on the crew
Me: o yea you don’t know
They are at sea serving strong men..they have to know some fighting to survive there. Also they are in the pirate era.. and a parallel universe where fruits give you supernatural powers and almost everyone is either a pirate or a marine or dreams to be one..so yeah..everybody can fight in one piece yeayyyyy.
If you are a Chrakter inside a Flashback in One Piece, you going to dead XD
“ I see a land!!!! Where? WATER! Later on. Start running protect the WATER! Lol funniest part ever but there so many episodes you guys don’t know which is it lol
I was going to bed! You just had to upload didn't you?
EDIT: Great vid btw, worth every second of lost sleep.
Worst past is nami then Sanju then Robin then chopper then zoro then puffy then Brook then luffy
*Franky after Brook oops lol
BTW Sanji s past is waaaaaay more then just him getting destroyed by zeff trust me u llbunderstand when u get to whole cake island I m on da latest episode and am reading da manga so yea
They need a musician to play music that's absolutely.. Bone chilling. Yohohohoho
U still didn't see sadness yet 😭😭😭
Aj: Everybody know martial arts
Usopp : .............
Nami :..........
Nami knew a little, she used a staff
“Can money satisfy your hunger?”
I really like your reactions, and one piece is one of my top favorite animes all time, you have an awesome and very long journey in front of you AJ. Keep up the good work!
He's training but he could beat everyone at the dojo save for Kuina, so now, he no longer (feels like he) has any way to check if he is actually improving.
cant wait to see you react to other episodes coming up
Scurvy can happen when yo uhave vitamin C defficiency, vitamin C being found in lemons, oranges, and some vegetables and tomatoes people traveling by ship sometime had a lack of those in the old times before the disease was known
Cant believe he will see the legendary episode this week already.
all your questions will be answered, oda is a god at explaining almost everything in due time
