      Yes, because I want the track capability for Thunder Hill and I want the mag ride control for the aweful CA roads. But if you don't want to race it, then you don't need the Z51.

      One of the benefits of the Z51 package is an extra 5hp and 5lb/s torque BUT it comes at a cost of $5+k and importantly 43 lbs/19.5kg in Extra Weight. So the power to weight % LOSS in itself is more than the power gain. The Z51 package gives it a performance loss, it's the effectively shorter gears by a changed axel ratio that gives it faster acceleration & the slicker tyres. Talking of weight, owners of the stock non Z51 packaged C8's could for no additional costs give it a performance boost that would go nearer towards any gains by the Z51 package.
      Were they to be the not so sociable type who vary rarely take passengers, simply take out the passenger seat, all its bottom base bracket and seat belt. This would give around a 60lbs/27kg weight saving with plenty of space then for internal luggage, for long distance occasional travel that could come in handy.
      An instant 1.6% power to weight gain with better acceleration, better mpg, less tyre and brake pad wear, all for free. I would seriously consider taking out that passenger seat. Saving lugging around 180+lbs of passenger and 60lbs of seating spoiling the performance. Let them be impressed from their viewpoint from the sidewalk.
      I wouldn't hesitate in NOT getting the Z51 performance package. Getting it as we know will cost $5k + sales tax, avg sales tax nationally is about 8%, so that's 400 bucks on top. It lowers the top speed by 10mph, pumps up the insurance costs every year, lowers the mpg, costs the owner a new set of 4 season tyres, plus possibly 4 new wheels to have them pre fitted for change over convenience. The extra cost of all that and its detriments, puts me off.
      AND possibly a big twang up if the car is driven in bad weather until the all season tyres are reluctantly obtained. Jan/Feb/March won't be such a great weather base for some States, but the hot heads will be out there in the cold and wet on their summer tyres. All to get that 0.1 secs or so faster 0-60mph, that and it's other benefits... Is it really worth it, I really don't think it is.
      Later on in a few years when the 3 year warranty has run out, when those in the used car market want a straight non ripped & ragged out C8, they may well want just a stock C8, something they can slap a Whipple Supercharger on, (If one is made to fit) and have themselves something with C8 Z06 performance or even better, all on the cheap.
      A 210mph monster for the cost of a used stock C8 and $10k fully fitted for the Whipple. Makes sense to me.
      Then this 0-60mph figure that folks are so keen on will be better than a C8 with a Z51 package. Putting the $5k savings on not getting the Z51 package towards the $10k supercharger. You may even need to get a new exhaust system to fit with a supercharger fitted, the one in the Z51 package might become a wasted item. There are bound to be better exhausts that come along than the Z51 package one. 5hp seems puny to me.
      If the majority of C8 owners get the Z51 package, the stock C8 will be more rarer, I'm convinced later on the stock C8's in the used car market will be more desirable in some areas than is currently forecast. Folks are getting whipped up in the frenzy of it all, being convinced and convincing themselves the Z51 package is the best option. With the previous C7 Corvette maybe it was, but you may find the C8 is a different matter, this industry changing vehicle changes so many things, the Z51 package could be one of them.
      I personally would avoid the Z51 package. It has it's benefits, quite a few benefits, but for what I'd want a C8 for it just wouldn't fit in with my plans. For others maybe it would, if so good luck to them and all C8 corvette owners. There's a nice little mark up for the dealer with each Z51 package sold, but they wouldn't get one off me, no matter what they or anyone else said.

    Great video. Am ordering LT1 with exhaust system upgrade. Not ordering Z51 package, as i will not be doing any tracking. I agree that sticking as close to the base model pricing as possible is your best move. You will probably be able to sell it within the first 2 years and get close to what you paid for it if you should decide to upgrade later. Also getting the black mirror option for a $100. Also front license plate bracket for $15, since Virginia requires front plates. Dealer told me probably 4th quarter delivery. Dealer told me they are producing the LT2 and LT3 models now and wont start producing the LT1’s until May.

    I opted for the HTC and Z51 and only 1LT. I love the HTC it looks way more exotic. For me the Z51 is worth it. I drive my Corvette’s hard so it’s worth it for me to have the higher performance package over the bling interior. Also it’s not the 5 HP for the Z51 upgraded exhaust but it sounds much more aggressive. And your wrong about the higher option cars depreciating faster. It’s the other way around the higher optioned Corvette’s hold their value better over time. I’ve owned 8 Corvettes and that’s been my experience.

  • @TomGlander
    @TomGlander 4 роки тому +3

    The biggest reason I got the Z51 packages on my 2016 Stingray is for the bigger rotors and brakes. That alone was worth the extra money. I think it matters on the C8 as well. Forget what this dude says about "not worth it." It's your money. If you don't track the car, so what. It DOES make sense if you're happier with the upgrades. These cars aren't investments. They're just for fun. Hell with appreciation or depreciation. That's not why we drive Corvettes.

    • @bigsean2473
      @bigsean2473 4 роки тому

      yeah on the c8 you only get bigger rotors not cailbers and there only slightly bigger 12.6 to 13.6 and 13.3 to 13.8, and if you plan to get the mag ride control you must get this package

    • @garysaunders8691
      @garysaunders8691 4 роки тому +1

      I don’t think it’s really worth debate at all whether the Z51 is “worth it or not”. $5k is worth a lot more to some than others. But it’s really only a few percent on a $70k car. You are buying a mid engine sports car for Christ’s sake. What’s $5k? You can’t justify this car anyway except for four basic reasons: its fun to drive, it looks cool, it makes your friends and neighbors jealous, it’s way cheaper than a Ferrari or Lamborghini or most Porsche’s. I’m buying this car simply as a fun toy for the weekend. I may only track it a few times in its life. But I’ll buy a loaded one because it checks all four boxes much better on the rationale index. It’ll make me happier. Buying a mid engine sports car, and then being cheap about it just seems a bit hypocritical. I WANT the eDiff, I WANT the front splitter and rear spoiler, I want the better brakes and cooling, I want the louder exhaust, I want the mag ride. It all makes it a better car. Do I NEED them? Heck no. But do any of us really NEED this car in the 1st place? Heck no. Even if it ends-up costing $85 or $90k... who cares. The one truth is it’s still a super bargain as compared to the Euro cars. If you are going to splurge on a sports car, do it right. For certain, it ain’t about resale value. If you are worried more about how much $$ you’ll lose on depreciation as a criteria, then I don’t think you should drop a dime on a Vette. If you can’t find or afford another $5k on $70k, maybe you also shouldn’t be buying a Vette. One thing I think may be true: if you buy a cheap 1LT vette now, you WILL be wanting to sell it in a few years. Im not sure there are any bragging rights for frugality in buying a cheap Corvette. If my dad had bought a base 60’s Corvette, it would probably have hit the scrap heap by the 90’s. But since he opted for a fuelly and all the options... it is now a drool car at Barrett-Jackson. Step up to the plate and get a decent Vette, and your kids or grandkids will be happier because you might actually hang onto the thing... not for the money, but for the fun of it.

    very good point about the options **subscribed**

  • @Saji310
    @Saji310 4 роки тому +7

    Apart of racing, there are two more points that could speak in favor for the Z51 package.
    1. Optics - If you don't intend to buy a spoiler on the aftermarket, you only have the high wing, or Z51 option. The high wing might have benefits on the track, but for people that see the C8 also as an every day driver, it might be too sporty optics and the Z51 package actually gives the better balance of optics and performance.
    2. Magnetic Ride - Here again the benefit for the daily use and not necessarily having a suspension that is trimmed for the track, is only available if you take the Z51 package.
    I don't know if Mag ride is not usable for the standard suspension in older Corvettes either, or why Chevy chose to sell only the exhaust as a seperate option from the Z51 package, but not the spoiler (something similar to M or AMG optic packages would had been nice), or other features, but it certanily is a limitation.

    • @DailyDownshift
      @DailyDownshift  4 роки тому

      Mag ride is an additional expense though, Z51 and that costs just shy of $7,000. That's close to $10,000 Canadian, that's a hard pass from us. I see what you're saying though in regards to the optics, the high wing is not for everyone.

    The package IS $5K but one REALLY should add the Mag ride control or the stiff suspension sucks on a daily driver. So Z-51 will really be $6895. If one lives in a colder climate the SUMMER ONLY rubber will need to be taken off as soon as it gets cold. They are especially worthless in cold WET conditions. Unless one REALLY tracks the car it's not worth getting. DO opt for the NPP exhaust though. $1195 for a far better sounding exhaust. I'm deleting z-51 going 2LT without. Cheers.

    This helped - I really want to order Z51+magneride+2LT but the smart money is baseC8+magneride only - I think as I will only rarely track the car if at all. I have magneride on my 2015 tahoe LTZ and was cursing the dealer replacement quote when the front shocks went out at 75K but when they work magneride shocks worth every penny. Ferrari licenses them from GM. I am 64 and have had a long string of performance vehicles American, German, British, etc. I'm planning on selling my 911 and ordering a 2021 c8. BTW I tracked my 911 and I was passing everyone in the Porsche club except for a couple of guys and it - finally - occurred to be that everyone else was out there in their $100k street cars so they weren't really willing to really push it anyway. I used to race motorcycles and had a great time but - eventually - one day (brake fade) I went into a gravel trap with the 911 at nearly 100 mph - so ask your self are you really really willing to push your c8 - Z51 or not - hard enough to risk putting it into gravel trap. FYI, it ends in a massive could of dust and the tow truck has to pull you out. It took 6 months to get all the dirt and gravel out of the undercarriage.

    Great job on this Z51 package vid! I have been trying to decide if the Z51 package is a good value. Honestly the only two options that are make or break for me are appearance based. I want the smaller Z51 spoiler and the front splitter that’s it. I will not track this car and would actually prefer the base model PF3 all season tires as well. I don’t see the option on the C8 builder site to simply add the two above mentioned items. Thoughts?

  • @switchlanez
    @switchlanez 4 роки тому +1

    Z51 comes with height adjustable suspension not available with base C8. I specifically want that, front lip, and the NPP exhaust (available as non-Z51 option). Those would easily approach 2.5k including installation in the aftermarket. Add in the other goodies factory installed and 5k seems like a bargain.
    Also top speed is limited by Z51's different axle ratio geared for 0.1s faster 0-60. The spoiler likely hinders acceleration (more downforce at higher speeds than at 0-60) more than top speed.

    Stuck at Coffee shop. Cost is $2.00 for normal cup or $2.05 for a little more caffeine. Holding up the line, don't know what to do. I could spend the 5 cents on a straw or lid. Or pay off that deck screw I have on lay-away at the hardware store. If I spend the $2.05, I can always make it up by using shorter shoe-strings for a couple years.

    I have a confession. I saw the new C8 Corvette from a different light today. I usually have to grow into liking a car, but this time I grew out of liking a car. Sometimes down the line, maybe 3-5 years later I ask myself how I could have liked a car. Today, I did that with the Corvette. The Ferrari has a nice shape, the lambo has a nice shape. This car looks like someone designed the front and someone designed the boxy back. The boxy back takes a lot away for the asthetic. Even though the sales will be great, because there are so many people excited about the redesign and all the power, lots of people will have the same negative feeling about the car. It looks like a 2000 concept Corvette, this already aged. I think it's the boxy back of the car that makes it look that way. Don't get me wrong, it's gonna sell like crazy.

It is the fact that the butterfly valves and altered path through the muffler produces a huge difference in sound that is adjustable by the driver. • @PatriotPaulUSA
    @PatriotPaulUSA 4 роки тому +1

    Take the 5K and buy the larger GM radiators, aftermarket cat back exhaust, a pair of 6 Piston Wildwood front calipers /13" rotors and Forgeline wheels and your favorite track tire. You could prolly get almost half of that for 5K and spend another 5K to get the rest . Way faster per lap than any Z51 , Sounds better, looks better, and performs better. Oh yeah I guess you could buy a wing if your into that. But minimal if any, performance will come from it ,over the stock one.

    I buy them used. The Z51 won't demand anywhere near a $5K premium on the used car market. Maybe $2K-$3K at most. I have a C7 Z06 and I expect the C8 with Z51 to perform about as well, possibly better, on most road tracks. A lot less horsepower but better traction and much faster shifts. And how the aero drag affects top speed is effectively meaningless, as you drive most road courses between 50 and 150 where the downforce from the added aero is way more valuable than its drag at high speeds. I’m not sure that I want to wait for the hybrid Z06, but we’ll see when the time comes.
