      I think the local council should come take care of someone's abandoned property like this...Contact their relatives, search any potential buyers, or write a short story about the family was living there. Feel so sad that the cars left there only with the shells; before the useful parts were stolen, it should have a new life if donate to someone in needed.

    Another great explore, Alec.
    No toilet, I don't fancy that.
    An estate agent would say, in need of a degree of modernization!
    I liked the old A55 pick up, I was offered a A55 van for my first vehicle, I didn't take it because it had column gears, it was a 1967 E reg.
    The Land Rovers, one was a 1972 K reg, the same age as my oldest motorbike, but my bike still runs!
    The other one was older, with the headlights on the grille.

      So much more available these days to bring the usual creature comforts to an off grid property - from non mains supplied boilers to compost toilets, solar and back ups. We are in a better place than ever to make use of these properties.

    Has the farmer adjacent taken over the land and just allowed a perfectly good traditional house to fall into disrepair or are the government no longer allowing people to refurbish these houses? It seems a criminal waste when you see the solid work that went into the structures. It is such a beautiful area, it is hard to imagine that in the days of shortages of homes that this is allowed. When I travelled throughout Scotland I saw properties like this in lots of areas.
    I like the way the homeowner had the medicine on the table, but the whisky by the bed. It was a shame that there were no 'images' of him or any information about him, other than clearly being a shepherd. I bet he was a really resilient, strong man. Beautiful house and wonderful views.

    • @lornaallan108

      It really is a shame but unfortunately its not just down to the government there's alot of red tape to go through as these are listed buildings my sister owns one somewhere else in Scotland there's loads of rules that u have to stick to and as well as can dos and cannot either. Its such a shame as its one of many reasons why buildings like this get left if passed on to other family members

    • @voxintenebris6367
      @voxintenebris6367 4 роки тому +4

      @Davieboymwell Jawz When they talk about 'sustainability' in the modern world, it is really annoying. There is nothing more sustainable than these traditional designs - everything sourced locally, stone and timber from a relatively small radius. I live in a former mining village, our houses are the traditional dressed stone terraced miners' cottages. The EU rules see fit to clad the houses with polyethylene - not happening here. Again, our houses used stone from a local (at the time) quarry. To rebuild these houses today is expensive, but if the SNP truly backed Scotland and her traditions, culture - they would be making this way of living a priority and supporting people to live off the land as their ancestors would have.

      @lordracula2461 5 місяців тому

      @@lornaallan108 Most of these rural cottages are not listed. Actually even in rural areas most traditional buildings are not listed. You have to apply for planning permission if the house has been derelict for a certain number of years too, you don't automatically have the right to renovate these vacant & ruinous homes
      Combine the draconian legal & taxation system with greedy land-owners (especially farmers & estate-owners) who will not give up the land no matter what, leads to a lot of ruinous houses in Scotland. My own house is over 200 years old and in a town centre and is still not listed or treated any differently to a 20 yr old house in the eyes of the law

    Love that little cottage, it's a shame it is going to ruin. The Swallows are an extra for me, very special. I had swallows that had made a nest on my porch, as you probably know, they are very territorial. I couldn't see the nest from my front windows, but they would come around, and tap on the window when seeing me sitting in my living room. It happened so often, I had to cloths my drapes. They wanted me out of there, I didn't bother them, and when they left I missed them. It reminded me of my Grandma, she always had Swallows on her porch.

    Saw loads of abandoned cottages like that in northwest Scotland on the way to John O'Groats. Remote location certainly has something to do with it. Probably still owned or occupies land belonging to the local farmer and he's not bothered about it.

      He is, isn’t he? When Alec showed us the nests i was thinking about how long it would take to make one! With the mud carried in their mouths, beaks? Each bit of mud the size of a TicTac, it must take dozens and dozens of trips for the bird to create a nest large enough for itself and 3 or 4 young. (I’m not certain how many eggs swallows lay.) Then to line the nest with grasses to make it soft would mean more trips back and forth, back and forth. Now I am curious to learn more about swallows. 😸 I have a rescued cat, too. He is 20 this year! 💖

    Great little cottage. I was fascinated to see the apple box with "Cape" against a back drop of Table Mountain on it, as it is from my part of the world, South Africa. It travelled far to get there!

    Sorry but I had to laugh . How both of you approach . Climbing into the window . Lot of stuff left in the house . Well you can say now . Both of you are poop investigators . Great episode . All of you have a great weekend .

    Does this cottage have owners? Family members? It could still be salvaged and saved and made livable again. Is no one interested in doing this? Such a wonderful location and no noisy neighbors!!!

    The pairs of shoes and boots neatly beside the bed waiting for a pair of feet to step in to them.............that now never will. How sad it all looks. The little nest with abandoned eggs.

    I really don't believe this is Alan shearers abandoned cottage. I think he'd have it a bit nicer than this, unless this is when he played for Blackburn. 🤔

    Just come across your channel I have subscribed. What a great place it would be good to buy these places and restore them to the forma glory such a shame that these places just fall to the ground. It has such great views it makes you wonder what happened to the owners I guess they died and have no family.

    With all the money held by a few you would think the government would remodel these old historical homes and place families in them. Their must be families in need of affordable housing in Scotland!

      Rural locations are simply not affordable or convenient enough for the working class in Scotland anymore. That's why there are so many abandoned cottages here
