  • A brief overview of my experience with the Moverio BT-40 Smart Glasses.
    Some additional notes:
Unity - A unity plugin exists for the glasses, though it targets Android.
Sensors - In addition to the ambience and compass/accelerometer/etc, the SDK indicates that there's an API to detect when the user taps on the side of the glasses. This could act like a button press much like it was done on Gear VR.
3D Mode - Enabling it on a PC or phone splits the incoming video in half and sends each half to a different projector. This is compatible with any side by side video content.
PC Control - A Moverio SDK is available online and comes with compiled binaries for the sample apps within that allow you to control the glasses.
USB C Displayport Adapter - Dell / SUNXI make the UPD2018 PCI-e add-in card for converting a displayport signal into a usb-c DP alt mode signal. If you can't find the card with a full-height bracket, a 3D printable bracket is available here - www.thingiverse.com/thing:480...

I've tested a Dell WD19 dock to charge my device and use the BT-40 simultaneously. While it works with the BT-40 on my PC, my Galaxy S8 doesn't appear to work. I don't have a newer phone to test on at the moment, but will update if I do in the future.
I have SteamVR mode working (and have had it working for some time) but have not yet made a showcase video and am not quite ready to release the code for it. Hold tight.

Has there been a specific HDMI to USB- C adapter that has been determined to work with BT-40?

    Good review.
Question - I've been looking for something like this as a golf app that I could pair with my phone camera on a tripod. Many avid golfers will take videos of their swing and then analyze it after. What would be much better in my mind is to be able to work on your swing in real time without having to stop and see if you are doing whatever it is you are working on correctly. Your thoughts on this would be appreciated Erik.

Hey Erik. Have you played with the "Pixcell shift amount" values in the Moverio SDK? I'm using the BT40, and I'm finding text a bit too blurry. As there isn't any way to physically adjust the angles of the projection or lenses on the device, I was hoping that there might be a way in software.

    • @ErikServili
      @ErikServili  2 роки тому

I haven't really played with those values, but I could check them out. Are you finding text blurry across the whole FOV or just at the edges? Is your feeling that you need to manually adjust it due to having an IPD far away from the average?

Eric, im interested in getting these for drone FPV [I mean for normal drones that dont have dedicated FPV display liek say Air 2 or any drone that has android app].
I have old ASUS ROG2 phone and it has two USB-C ports, one on the bottom USB 2.0, and one in the middle of the device its USB 10Gbps [also this is the one for the video out], they both can charge the phone and transfer data.
Do you think ill be able to both connect the glasses to the video port and connect the drone controller to the USB 2.0 USB-C port?

    • @ErikServili
      @ErikServili  2 роки тому

This is a hard one to answer, but I think it would work. Is the usb connection for the drone handling the video stream or does that happen over wifi? If it's over USB, I would look online to see if it's running at USB 2.0 speeds or 3.0 speeds. If it's only using 2.0 speeds, then I don't see why it shouldn't work.

I did have something basic working by tying it in to opentrack, but it wasn't really shippable in its current state, and for your use would require you to run something like steamVR+virtual desktop and a dummy plug to use the desktop view how you're describing it.

    • @McCyberfly
      @McCyberfly 2 роки тому

@@ErikServili I see, thank you for the response. I'm not sure how this works but imagine there are some 3D coordinates that need to be sent over from the glasses and translated onto a 2D plane like the desktop but not sure how the "dummy plug" and "steamVR" are involved and why this would require a virtual desktop instead of interacting with the real one by translating the coordinates to cursor movement directly, something like what the Precision Gaze Mouse and similar software is doing. Would sure appreciate any further thoughts on this...

@@ErikServili On another note, I've found that the glasses work fine for general imagery. But while reading smaller text on the screen there seem to be random patches of areas where the text is blurred compared to other areas which are clear and well readable. I've done lots of testing and comparison to rule out eyesight problems and the issue does indeed seem to be in the device itself. Have you experienced something similar while reading small text through the device? The blurred areas will move and shift around the image as the glasses are shifted around my face or text is scrolled but there are always these patches where text is much less clear to read than in other areas where it is crystal clear. This makes the product itself look like not such a great choice for other than multi-media usage. Blurred text is not great for a desktop monitor replacement for regular work. I am wondering whether it could be just a faulty product or it's a general limitation of the technology.

Hello, I was curious if you find it possible to write or edit documents using the glasses? I'm trying to find an option to write code lying down because I can't stay upright all day. Additionally, my disability makes it hard to turn my head so it would be awesome if the video was locked to my field of view which it looks like this item does. It seems like most cinema glasses have motion tracking built in and look kind of heavy which would be a problem, so this might be the best option if the display is clear enough. But you weren't kidding about the availability issue, all I could find was this for about $1,500 on eBay! Maybe you have an answer to this question; do you know of any other products that just displays hdmi/dp/pc output to set of glasses/goggles instead of a monitor? Thanks!

the concept of the product is quite innovative, and practical, yet it makes the user struggle alot to have a proper actual use for it.... But I'm very glad there was someone who takes more deep look in this device,
in spite of its broad possible usage, I think the device is used by only minor group. possibly due to its pricy entrance to have one of their model....
and compared to the technology they actually achieved, They do lack just one or two simple tricks which could actually have been critical element to drag in many demands.
ONE BIG heavy technology achieved, yet one or two bad spot ruining the whole picture.
That feels really, amazingly ridiculous. and extremely annoyingly silly !
and I don't know if Epson really knows how they do their work, but It feels even worse from the point of view of someone who purchasing their goods..
This is what I've experienced.... but still I am trying to find the proper usage for this with patience.
It's been about months for me using this device, my most recent interest was.... "possible methods to use this SmartGlass device as HDMI receiver?"
I've been trying to use this Epson Moverio Smartglass BT-30C device for multiple beneficial ways,
especially as it was advertised originally,
as its output connect is C type USB, and as connected to android phone,
it could successfully recognize Moverio glass as HDMI device, so enabling to mirror the screen of my phone.
major usage from this product seems to be related with ... streaming the vision of Drone flying.
in my personal usage from this product (Moverio BT-30C) is to firstly mirror my android phone's screen and then remote connect to my PC.
So eventually, as if using my PC, yet being free from the duty carrying around heavy and bothering big sized monitor screen. as I could use my Moverio glass as if monitor already ! which is Fantastic.
The method though, requires strong internet connection as it will do remote connect to my pc.
But then, here is my question in a bit different usage, perhaps more advanced.
So here I have STICK PC, which is a product maximizing portability, having a complete PC concept in a size of pocket, as simple STICK form.
and most of times it is meant to be used with a monitor that receives HDMI signal, as these STICK PC, have this male HDMI output connector. (and encoutering monitor device would have female HDMI port, which needs insertion of male output connector)
    So here at this point,
I do personally think the most powerful benefit of BT-30C Moverio Smartglass is how it could be absolutely portable, pocket sized 'monitor' that you could literally wear !
and if only I can use this Moverio SmartGlass with my STICK PC,
both will be portable pocket sized, light weighted, pleasurably carriable anywhere.
Imagine a situation taking a flight from somewhere Tokyo, and to Lisbon, Portugal,
which will consume more than 12 hours in fixed seat during the flight.
only if Moverio Glass was something that was designed to be able to use even with HDMI port, maybe purchasing some of more supplementary tools,
I can really convert all those very boring and time wasting hours into sheer work-hours.
as I could do my work, even in environment that is offline non-internet connection.
and not even needing a desk in front of me to place a monitor. as I could simply wear this Moverio Glass on my eyes.
and maybe I can place my keyboard on my lap, therefore I can do my job as much as I want just freely. It sounds really fantastic,
It becomes really the moment in any physical environment or transportation you take such as BUS AIRPLANE TRAIN SUBWAY
or even sitting in the middle of park , in a street bench,
you can do your work. ANYWHERE.
and I'm keep trying to advance its usage to reach that point, which could really maximize the product (moverio glass) 's usage.
(This is the STICK PC I have btw. just for information let me tag the link so maybe you can acquire the information if needed...)
    www.amazon.ca/Twingle-Stick-MDS-2300W10AC432-Compact-MicroSD/dp/B06XFXW2YX
    after some of repeating words,
My eventual question is .... IF Moverio SmartGlass BT-30C was designed to be able to use with HDMI output male connector having device. (Just as the STICK PC product which I showed above.. )
even if originally it wasn't aiming that purpose,
if there could be any breakthrough method with supplementaries. ex) convertors etc.
I already have tried some of plausible methods by myself, yet it didn't really work unfortunately.
the method I tried was, purchasing these few supplementaries below.
(1). HDMI receiver (female) to C type (male) convertor.
(2). Female (C type) to Female (C type) connector.
So then, receive this hdmi output connector by (1) , and then connect it to (2), then receive C type connector from the both sides (STICK PC and Moverio Glass)
for some reason, it didn't work.
and for now, I am really lost which solution I can find in this situation.

Does looking through the lenses optically distort what you are seeing? How about peripheral vision, is it noticeably reduced? I do a fair amount of biking and I don't mind looking like a geek. ;-) I'm thinking about investing in these, but I'm wondering how safe the experience might end up being? I'm less worried about road riding, but more concerned about riding singletrack trail.
I'm guessing I could not only get used to but eventually enjoy having a transparent heads up display of Google Maps or a rear view camera or texting (read and respond to short text messages by voice). I believe I could also get used to reduced peripheral vision and not having a glasses-free 100% undistorted field of view.
So maybe you can't speak directly to biking, but have you done things like gone for a short drive or going out for a hike with the BT-40 on while you were using it? For lack of a better phrase, do you feel the BT-40 "got in the way?"
If you had to take a guess, do you think it would be suitable for my intended uses?
Thanks for putting up your informative review, subscribed!
Bonus questions: would you guess using them outside in bright sunlight would wash out the image too much to be worth using? Would using them on an overcast day potentially increase visibility to the point of being usable? I'm not sure if those magnetic sunglasses Epson makes for these would be practical for how I envision using them, but if I found a large enough pair of regular sunglasses to modify, do you think that using those might increase the screen visibility especially on a bright sunny day?

You're only losing a little bit of the middle of your periphery due to the sides of the glasses being there. The area where the images project is slightly darker than the rest of the glasses and your vision, and there's a very amount of distortion right at the transition to that darker region, but nowhere else.
The glasses don't get in the way while walking/hiking and I have had maps operating, but no, I've never tried them while driving. There's a big warning not to use them with moving objects since the potential technically exists for whatever you have hooked up to them glitching out and projecting a solid color right in the middle of your vision. Realistically, since you can still see above and below the glasses, it's probably fine.
I think for your intended use case, you'd need a something holding the two arms together so the glasses can't slip off your head. I'm not certain how well they'd hold up to the repeated shocks of mountain biking, and the "sweet spot" of the screen may be a little hard to maintain while bumping around. At least that's my suspicion while using the standard nose rest. I'd say you may be able to make it work, but it's not an ideal use case.
Regarding bright sunlight, I think anything mimicking sunglasses in front of the screen would achieve the same effect as the magnetic ones and should allow you to use them. Otherwise, it can be a little hard to make out the screens while looking towards the sun (especially if the brightness isn't at max, which itself will drain more battery/make them run hotter)

@@ErikServili Awesome answer, thanks for taking the time to reply. There is a product called croakies that looks like it might serve well for keeping these glasses in place.
Maybe you haven't had them long enough or have used them enough to have enough material for a follow-up video, but I'd definitely like to see it if it happens.
      Potential topics to discuss:
      A) how often do they actually get used during a typical day?
      B) what use cases (and/or apps, programs) did they actually get used for, as compared to what you expected you would use them for
      C) are there things you use them for that surprised you?
      D) are they used most often with a phone or a computer or something else?
      E) I've heard someone talking about a competitor's product and saying that they were tiring on the eyes to use after an hour or two... I suspect you'd have needed to start using a wireless power bank to use it with a phone more than an hour or two... it would be interesting to hear if they are tiring on the eyes or feel too heavy to wear after X amount of time.
      F) I'm thinking one of the coolest use cases would be watching immersive 360 degree video, especially the highest definition videos available on UA-cam. I think the glasses themselves have the right sensors to make that work, but I wonder if there are any moverio-friendly video viewing apps out there that even allow that? My guess is using some croakies with a horizontal phone pouch would allow a workable work-around for immersive 360 degree videos.
      G) if you have worn them going to the store other places where people have seen you wearing them, what has been the reaction? I remember the word everyone used for Google Glass users back in the day, glassholes, lol. It's probably too bad that most people who might see you wearing this could assume there's a built-in camera when there isn't.
      H) anyting you'd like to do with them in the future but haven't tried yet? For me, fpv flying would look like it'd be worth picking up if I end up with a pair of these. Watching at least one sbs 3D movie? I could think of at least a dozen other things, I hope I can fit these in my budget a lot sooner rather than later.
Well anyway there's another stupidly long post of mine, perhaps these are just mostly gathering dust for you by now and you are wondering what all my fuss is about, lol.
Given that it looks like hopping on a bike and taking a ride to the beach and getting outside in general looks to be a good idea with these, I think more people would be willing to give them a chance if they knew the capabilities.
I'm not sure how much work I could get done walking around the beach with these, but I know I would definitely want to make it work given how much I like the sound of that scenario.

@@ErikServili Sorry for the billion questions by the way (again, lol), but if you still have your BT-40 and maybe my last post inspires you in any way to make a follow-up video, all the better. It really looks like some promising tech, even though I've read recently it does tend to get pretty hot if it's used too long.

@@ErikServili Which was really poor in my case. I returned my glasses a week ago because of how much of a power hog the glasses can be. I would only get about 1 - 1.5 hours of use from 95% to 5% battery on my Note20 Ultra. What also sucks is that you can't connect an external battery to the device (as far as I'm aware, the controller board has an unused push connector that is close to the USB PD chip.)
Hopefully the next generation of this device allows the ability to do PD charging to a battery pack, with that I'd be able to wear and use it all day.

@@AidanNaut0 I've been using a 15w (edit: actually it's a 10w) wireless samsung fast charging puck to make it more manageable while using my phone, but my phone has an odd behavior where the charging speed drops dramatically when USB is in use. I've been using it with an extension cord on my PC as well where draw is inconsequential, but I agree that a USB C input for power injection on the cable seems like it should've been a strong consideration given the power requirements.
I'm tempted to also try one of those phone sized battery banks that have wireless charging on board, but I don't know of an affordable one that does 15w charging.

I was always under the assumption that the glasses would need to be close to my eyes for me to experience a large frame of content with readable text. But the doctor in this video wears the glasses a good distance from his eyes and appears to still be able to read text and utilize whatever content he is viewing.
    ua-cam.com/video/QYoBmPOfZ8Q/v-deo.html
I was also planning on wearing these on top of my glasses. I think the bt40 would end up roughly the distance away from my face as the doctor has in the video.
You've had these glasses for a while but if you don't already know, could you take a second to just confirm whether or not the BT40 is usable if it is placed further from your eyes like in the doctor video?
Any additional commentary you might have as to the usability of the bt40 when it is normally closer to your eyes, or further away could be really useful, thanks.

    • @ErikServili
      @ErikServili  2 роки тому +1

The glasses are made to be worn at a distance that allows you to still wear corrective eyewear underneath while seeing the full screen. That said, if you take that to the extreme and wear them too far away, you start to lose the edges of the screen and clarity outside of the center starts to get worse. The video you linked doesn't really have the user reading text, just observing graphics, so they can get away with moving the glasses further from their face. Text font size and position would be a big factor in how far away the glasses can be while still being legible.

Bought them after seeing this video since Epson decided not to market these at all and nobody else is properly reviewing them. I wanted a decent 1080p display as a second (or primary) screen on the go for my GPD Win 3 and maybe my phone.
Sad to say not only do they not work with my Android device (Pixel 4a), but they don't work with the primary device I purchased them for. A friend came across an Intel post alleging they don't work AT ALL on ANY Intel Xe device, which seems insane to me because that means all recent Intel devices just don't function with these.
After contacting Epson, they took a few days to get back to me just to offer me a return & refund. They have no intention of properly supporting this device. 🤦

Sorry they didn't work out for you. Google decided to push their cast ecosystem and not include USB video output on any pixel devices, so that part is on them. As far as the Intel support issue, can you link to the post your friend found? If it affects the entire Tiger Lake series (which I agree sounds crazy), I'd be interested to find out if it's on Epson or Intel trying to wiggle around the USB C DP spec, though info will probably be limited if I can't get my hands on one of their engineers.

They feel CLOSE ENOUGH to sci-fi visors but not entirely I am up to debate on buying them in 2023 to watch streaming and they're available on the market compared to discontinued products like the Royole Moon and Sony HMD they look more futuristic is why I want to try. Yeah definitely doesn't get the Google Glass type feeling to them at all this is technology probably being adopted by the military as well or the government the screen is kind of small but certain tasks like translating might be a kind of sci-fi type feeling. The screen is very debatable and probably not worth the money these people are asking for I'd be kind of cautious about it it's not bad but if you're expecting to look futuristic find something else that screen display is kind of small.
