    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Darcy (Matthew Macfayden) comes to Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) and asks her if she will still have him.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Jane Austen's perennially popular story of the game of love among the British upper classes returns to the screen in this polished film adaptation. The Bennets (Brenda Blethyn and Donald Sutherland) are the parents of five daughters near the close of the 18th century. Comfortable within their means but well short of rich, Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are looking for suitable husbands for their girls, and they are encouraged to learn that an eligible young bachelor from a wealthy family, Charles Bingley (Simon Woods), has moved into a nearby estate. Eager to see if a match can be made, the Bennets bring their daughters Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) and Jane (Rosamund Pike) to a ball thrown by their new neighbor to see if sparks will fly. Jane seems to like Charles, and he appears to feel the same, but Elizabeth takes an immediate dislike to Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), Charles' egocentric best friend. While Elizabeth is infatuated with military man Lt. Wickham (Rupert Friend) and finds herself courted by William Collins (Tom Hollander), a well-meaning but drab man of the cloth, fate causes Elizabeth and Darcy to frequently cross paths, and while they don't care for one another, they can't stop thinking about each other, either. Pride & Prejudice also stars Jena Malone, Judi Dench, and Penelope Wilton.

I can't believe soooo many people missed the significance of "hands are cold".. Darcy being super rich and all always uses horses and carriages... Elizabeth was even looked down upon by his folk for walking distances.. here, (as suggested in the book) he walked almost more than 3 miles in the morning chill (which would be more than all his life's walk), just for Elizabeth, he's trying the things she likes, that shows his commitment, sincerity... She realised he had walked all the way in the chill FOR HER, and he nodded indicating, 'you mean that much to me'.... There's so much to it ❤️❤️❣️

I would say, since he once offered her his hand (wanted to wed her), and his proposal/hand was rejected, now she wishes to warm his hand by taking it in her own (she said yes to the second proposal).

I think he was only saying that cause she is inferior to him in class as bingley says she very agreeable like Mr Collins wanted Jane first but like he said Mr Collins says Elizabeth is very agreeable it says Darcy fails to endear elizabeth cause she heard that I think he said cause like I said she inferior cause it says on the wiki of Mr Darcy that Darcy doesn't think much of Elizabeth cause she is inferior to him in social class however he starts to admire her beauty and intellect

Suggesting the rest of the old saying, "Cold hands, warm heart"--which he certainly has, but it has taken her all this time to realize it. Also subtly hinting that she can help him warm them, then leaving the method to our (very active) imaginations.

There was also a lot of symbolism with Mr. Darcy's hands throughout the film. When he helps Lizzie in the carriage, and after she sees him at his house, there are closeup shots of his hand. It's symbolic that one day Elizabeth will have his hand in marriage :)

Okay, but the fact that he walked to her home... No horse, no carriages like before, he walked. Now loop back to the Pemberly scene, where she said she was fond of walking, and he replied he knew that when he asked to see her back to town. He was willing to walk with her all that way simply to be with her. A very subtle but amazing way of tying it in. The rich and powerful Mr. Darcy walking around in mud puddles and his sleepwear for miles just for her. Just for a chance and the hope of being with her.

+Shelby Soto I definitely agree with you on this I love how he walks towards her in that long trench coat. "Dear god Miss Elizabeth did you walk here?" "I did." "My god did you see her hem, six inches deep in mud" Must not have been the norm to walk in the countryside back then. But I think thats what Darcy loved about her, she had a mind of her own and she didn't care what anyone thought about her. Twinning with them trench coats lol

What I loved about this story was there was no sex scene, there was no passion. It was romantic, but it wasn't passionate love. It was warmth, it was intimate, and it was between 2 people who actually care about each other. Maybe I'm just too much of a bookworm when I say I really do believe this kind of love exists, and that soon or later this will happen to me too.

Thank you! I was wondering all the time, why I loved this movie so much, although I'm not into romantic movies. Because this is the real stuff, not like the movies with Jennifer Aniston. This is the truest sense of romance, which I felt immediately, but couldn't explain to myself. You say it, warm and intimate, and the romantic tension between was felt quite from the first moment, Darcy noticed Lizzy.

THAT SUNRISE!!! The timing of their foreheads touching in perfect profiles with the morning sunrise rising is the type of detail I live for! I so appreciate the director Joe Wright for taking what is essentially a simple exchange of words in a room and adapting it to be framed by a foggy moor and a glorious rising sun in the horizon. This is what book to movie adaptation should always be about. It’s hard enough to schedule evening sunsets for film but even harder to schedule the filming of a morning sunrise with an entire crew and actors ever so seamlessly making their marks to GET THAT SHOT! Let alone it’s England and you can’t guarantee a clear enough horizon to even get a beaming sun. It’s a simple scene on paper, easy loveliness to the eyes when viewing but an ambitious direction in the background. I can go on and on. I LOVE THAT SHOT SO MUCH!!! 🌄💕

As someone who watched the movie before reading the book i can say that the manners and etiquette of the regency period are part of what really make that Period Drama Pining™ hit hard in both the book and movie, but it's also what took all the wind out of my sails lmaoo the confession scene was incredibly anticlimactic in the book. It might have satiated women of the time but i felt it was quite stiff. I really appreciate what Joe Wright and other directors have done to fill in those areas tbh. i know jane austen wrote novels of manners which served to mostly teach people lessons, but the romance is still very important :3 that's all i had to say

And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you.'
Persuasion (when she reads his letter)

I'll admit that when I began watching this movie I didn't think that Mr. Darcy was very attractive. But once I got to this point in the movie my feelings for him completely changed. It was his kindness, love, and loyalty that made me find him handsome and altogether wonderful. This is by far my favorite scene in the movie, walking all that way to see if she was alright after he heard that his Aunt had paid her a surprised visit. The sunrise it's self is very symbolic, representing a new day, a fresh start at love. The beginning of something new.

It's always been in my experience that the more attractive the personality, the more attractive the person becomes. At the beginning of the movie, his attitude was admittedly cold and imperious, not very magnetic traits, and it shows on the face. But the more his haughtiness melts away, the more his hottiness grows.

the fact of the matter is that some changes will always have to be made when converting from one medium to another. where those changes lie can be completely make or break. Joe Wright made wonderful decisions.
Pride and prejudice is a classic, a very well made piece of art. Converting that art to the screen is difficult because it simply cannot be one to one, decisions and changes must be made. While the 1995 mini series is very good and follows the book much closer, it is the 2005 adaptation that truly has movie magic for me the way the book has its own magic. Wright was able to take the basis of the story and change it to work for his own medium, while not convoluting or oversimplifying the meat of the story.

The thing I find really interesting but only just noticed is the importance of Lizzie kissing Darcy's hand. it's a surprisingly subversive gesture for a period piece like this. You'd generally expect a gesture like that to come from the man in a period setting like this, or even in a modern setting. Speaks volumes about Lizzie's character, this little gesture.

    • @Oryon7
      @Oryon7 5 років тому +216

Yes, it shows that to win the heart of a woman such as Liz, a man's traditional pride - especially of the era - had to be completely broken. No better way to do that by reversing the roles of a hand kiss.
As for Liz herself(rebellion to the notion of a shallow love/traditional marriage as she is), it shows that she, too, was complete won over by Darcy's character by offering to kiss the hand of a man whom she had previously stated - wrongfully - that she could never be persuaded to marry. It was a gesture that her heart was absolutely contented by both Darcy, and by her notion of true love. Beautiful!

Progressive in more ways than one! There's the societal layer you pointed out, plus my fave - the personal layer. She loves him not just because of lust, which is what we'd usually be given in a romance, but because of who he is and what he's done. She's literally kissing his good works, the things he brought into existence with his own hands. A beautiful moment of true intimacy and respect.

I’m independent, have a love for walking (or running), reading, and I’m not afraid to speak my mind like Elizabeth and I have a more serious face, I don’t dance that much, I dress nice like Darcy or more casual like Elizabeth but she dresses nice, too.

One of my favorite lines in this film is not what is said but how it is said:
"My aunt... how can I ever make amends for such behavior." His soft tone of voice, so concerned for her feelings, full of such genuine regret that she was treated like that. It echoes very much his own regret for how he handled his initial courtship of Lizzie. Let's compare this proposal to the proposal in the rain: where he didn't take her feelings into account, he was harsh and blunt and undisciplined, was so prepared for an obligatory yes response.
Here, months later, after introspection and maturing he is expressing himself much better, telling her first off she can send him away forever with one word. He is empowering Lizzie. This time he doesn't rattle off all the reasons he *shouldn't* marry her, he instead tells her all the reasons why he would love to be her husband. Darcy has polished his rough edges, he is able to bring forth all the great things about his person--which is truly noble and good. It's so beautiful... it's one of my favorite things about this movie, the before and after. Such a satisfying catharsis ♥️

I'm so late, but there WAS a kiss! Lizzie kissed his hand! It makes me love this scene even more. Instead of watching the same stereotype of a kiss on the lips to demonstrate passionate, sexual love, we get the beauty and quiet intimacy of a kiss on the hand because their love is based on mutual respect and admiration. She is kissing the things he's DONE with his hands - the actions he's taken and the choices he's made. She loves him for the entire person he is - more than just lust. And at the end, when their faces finally touch, it's not on the lips - it's their foreheads touching. A meeting of minds

Other versions of Pride and Prejudice have their merit (as I've seen when many women rave over Colin Firth's wet shirt scene in the 1995 one), but I sincerely felt the chemistry between Keira and Matthew as Elizabeth and Darcy. Not all fans of the book need the closest adaptation of the story to think of it as the best. The BBC version had the advantage of more hours to tell the story as well. However, this version more than made up for it by little nuances, like close ups on Darcy's hand each time he has a close encounter with Lizzy or the background stories happening at the Netherfield ball while Lizzy was walking around. I love this version because I thought the casting was really good, the story was alive and the passion between Lizzy and Darcy, even when they were verbally sparring, smoked the screen.

It’s perfect. The music, showing how no matter where they were, it was always between them. They were on their own wavelength, and nobody saw it, not even them. And it slowly became true, confusing them until they realized that their world was around each other, just like when they were dancing and they suddenly became the only people in the room. Anyone who is in love understands this. It’s incredibly deep and consumes you, an obsession that becomes your whole life, almost like a primal hunger about someone you do not understand, only fulfilled when you’re around this person. There is no stronger force in the world.

After seeing this movie several times, and this particular clip dozens of times, I just last week picked up on something I love. After his forehead is against Lizzie's a couple of seconds, he slowly and softly rolls his head to the right and back against her forehead. It's very subtle but the emotion is very touching and sweet. I now look for it every time I see this clip. Not all clips posted of this scene stay on long enough to see it. Macfadyen hits it out of the park once again!!!

As a child my family was very toxic. My mother and father always fought and I rarely ever saw them show affection towards each other. My father was my best friend as a child and I watched hundreds of movies together. He always watched this movie when I was little, I can recite the entire movie by heart and honestly seeing my father crave this type of love and affection he didnt have broke my heart but also made me realize how much I wanted it for myself. This movie is something I can always look back to and think so heavily of my father the emotions I get from when I was a little girl with my dad watching this movie and him setting standards for me to have. I love this movie and it’s so close to my heart ❤️

He needed three attempts at saying "I love you". The final attempt was his best with the choke in the throat. Lizzy's best moment was "Your hands are cold" which signaled the putting of his forehead on hers and then raising his right hand to stroke her face.
In the first proposal, it was the final bit with the tilt of his head and her lowering of her head as if to position themselves for a kiss that did not come. Despite the verbal acrimony, the strong attraction was all there.
