What an amazing rendition of Raag Marwa and then Puriya Dhaneshri. Thank You so much Farhan Amin Ji for uploading these hidden gems. It is only because of great and noble souls like you that we are getting a flavour of Indian Classical Music so easily.
I realised today that I had been mixing up Puriya Dhanashree and Marwa (I have an untrained ear). I came to UA-cam looking specifically for videos explaining the difference between the two and this popped up at the top. Who better than Panditji to demonstrate it to me. 💓
Thank you Farhan, for sharing these gems.🙏 There is a drop in Laya around 25:40 and laughter from the audience thereafter. I feel this would be a reaction to Panditji signalling to the Tabla player to tone it down. Also, the Tabla player’s aggressive fillers and flourishes sound out of place, especially for a solemn Raga like Marwa.
That legendary drut Marwa bandish is kind of too complicated even for the greatest of legends to bring out the ras. I've heard Ajoy Chakraborty do somewhat justice to it. Apart, from the original master himself.
I know of a few Marwa's of his from the 1960s, available on UA-cam. ua-cam.com/video/odaoNbnLkE0/v-deo.html A mehfil ua-cam.com/video/k-P2oHfjMqM/v-deo.html Another, shorter mehfil ua-cam.com/video/Zv54ypu7UGE/v-deo.html A mehfil where he sang rare ragas; Marwa starts around 24:29 He even has a 1968 LP where he sings Marwa; can't find a link right now for the whole LP recording. Here is the drut from it though: ua-cam.com/video/Z0dzUFuObXs/v-deo.html
You're right about the documentary; apparently, it was directed by Shyam Benegal; he mentions it here: www.deccanherald.com/content/131871/humble-his-greatness.html
@@FarhanAmin1994 Here's the Marwa from the documentary: ua-cam.com/video/-jkrbbhWnN0/v-deo.html. I have not heard the bandish "Ab Mil Aaye" being rendered in madhya laya Teentaal before this. I wonder if the music director Vanraj Bhatia had something to do with this.
Thanks for pointing us towards this documentary, Gunanidhi! It also happens that Bhimanna had sung a Lalit for the same documentary: ua-cam.com/video/umPoU70oUEc/v-deo.html The Punjabi composition of "Bhavanda Yarada Jobana" comes alive in this rendition.
🙏🙏
Bharat ratna pandit Bhimsen Joshi ❤

Thanks for yet again uploading a gem. I am hearing Tarana in Puriya Dhanashree by PBJ for the first time.
I think one other rendition exists on UA-cam. Let me find it.
Here, he sings it after a vilambit in Poorvi. ua-cam.com/video/uKQH9yjk4dQ/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/4FloM4iV-Lc/v-deo.html... it's gauri but very similar to this puriya dhanashree tarana.
Thank you both!

Vasantrao Achrekar on Tabla and Eknath Thakurdas on Harmonium
The signature dagga of Vasantraoji...
And Vocal support by Sri Ramkrishna Patawardhan
Thank you. Always a pleasure to listen to the master. Atmosphere gets filled with the naad of his voice.

Rare Marwa by Bhimsen Joshi. Bhimsen Joshi had sung Marwa in the background in one of very old documentary on Jawaharlal Nehru.
Wow! I never knew this!
