One of my absolute favorite moments of the comics is when she gets sucked into the red eye and everything has this sort of red hue and so it makes her hair look brown, just like Johannas.
"Hilda" is hands-down one of my top favorite cartoons from last decade, and you did an amazing job analyzing the color palette of this show. It really emphasizes this series' calm tone, and to a degree the surreality with the mythical creatures inhabiting their surroundings. I really hope Season 2 comes out soon.
I'm a graphic designer with rudimentary experience in animation and the color pallette of this series grabbed me from the first time I saw it, I love the way muted colors work in the show and the line art is amazing!! it's hard when you animate to find the right balance to every color, but they made it work perfectly!
I just discovered this series on Netflix. I really love the art style and color palette they use. They give warm feeling and comfort for some reason. I’m an adult but this is such a healing show
Great, now whenever I watch the show I'm going to be constantly looking for blue colors and thinking about what they mean. Thanks Chad! But seriously. This is a awesome video. I really love how you spotted all these little details to the show that many of us likely overlooked.
I didn't see green in the close ups, but in that far shot the dragon looked green thanks to the compliment of the surrounding trees. Ah, I see they make use of the Disney Lime Green. Love that color.
I love the composition thought process in this show, as color theory and strong composition have often been used a lot to plan out most artwork and it's really cool to see how cartoons can apply these similar traits!
This came out sooner than expected! Thanks so much for this and any of your content! And if you ever need an particular giant monster film to review, call me up for free copies - you know I'm loaded in such Godzilla-inspired silliness.
This was one of the most intriguing videos I have ever seen! It made me look at this show from an entirely different les and now that I know about it, you can bet I'll be applying this les to other tv shows to see how it makes them look from the perspective of color!
i adore videos that discuss colour psychology. i think you did it brilliantly. an excellent essay for a lovely little show. i'm so glad i took a chance on it. and thank you for this video :)
I'm glad to see more from you C.R. I've been a huge fan from way back in the CA days (back when it was TGWTG even) and I always enjoyed your work. Hope to see more content from ya.
Glad to see you cover Hilda, i had no Idea this was inspired on europian comics, but that being said... The tintin comic's did have really popping color
CR, I am so glad to see this video. You were one of my biggest influences and I am glad to see another familiar faces again. Awesome video idea too. Loved Hilda.
Ohmygod this explains so much! I didn't realize that i have been looking out for the blue but i did notice thag i pay quite a lot of attention to the environment when watching the series 😂 that's something i didn't even do when watching anime hahshs
I've been doing some experiments with colors. Mainly for blood bowl. Having metallics with matte colors. I have metallics on the armor, you can tell what's armor, it replicates the shine stadium lights would give off high gloss plastic, also demostrates that medieval metallurgists can color armor different colors by controlling oxidation of the metal. The matte colors I use for anything cloth, still keeping with the team scheme. Either complimenting colors, or starkly contrasting colors.
A fascinating analysis. I noticed a ton of familiar colours, but I can see just how thematically they are now. Something very uneasy about the Marra girl's black and pink with the white. Kind of like, forgive me for the morbid comparison, pink eye.
IT'S NOT BLUE IT'S TEAL! actual blue of any hue would clash terribly! but teal is closer to green, which is alot more complimentary to red. so the teal and orange works perfectly together
I must be way more drunk than usual because CR just released a new video out of the blue: if said video is still here tomorrow, then it may *not* be a hallucination. Untill this is proven true I'll just file this under same hallucination as the "Bone Emissary".
I actually struggled with Hilda A LOT at first because of the colours. I CRAVED other colours, spoiled by Gravity Falls, I think. I managed to endure three episodes and gave up, I felt so annoyed by the limited colour pallette. Came back about a year later, prepared for the colours, and it was easier the second time, and I stopped having troubles with them altogether by the end of the season. Just me? Okay.
Are you going to discuss Captain Planet,Gargoyles,Jack Frost(DreamWorks rise of the guardians),Ginormica(Monster vs Alien),Gargoyles,Darkwing Duck Or The Creeper(Jack Ryder) the Adventures of Batman the animated series?I would really appreciate it!
noticed this on Netflix, but to be honest I didn't watch it cause I assumed it would be another CalArt show, quirky yes, but meh, guess I was completely wrong LOL
Agree with me or not. Hilda did bring my childhood memories of wondering through the forest at summer looking into deep holes looking for magical creatures (I wan't smart kid), reading magazines to expand my imagination. The show seems to be exactly like my memories of moving into different place with new culture people and stuff with adventures that would look very similar.

2 videos in one year. It must be Christmas
Welp, still a January. It might be Christmas leftovers.
Yes it is
It is now
The colors in this show make me love it so much.
Everything in this show make me love it so much)
The name of Hilda's hair colour is "GUMBO." Mixed with "PATINA." Think Statue of Liberty.
This show is my most current obsession because it is so good and it is just such a calm and wonderful show. It has amazing continuity and I love it.

I’m glad you talked about this series.
I swear! Hilda is the only gal that can pulled off the red and blue combo, those two colours clash with each other!
I always love it when you upload these videos. they're the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love this show its best the is and the colors the voices its awesome all though I'm waiting for season three
Love watching this as soon as the second season ended.

Also the librian has an name now, Kaisa! Also no, she doesn't appear in the books at all!
I don't have Netflix but this seems worth checking out just from an artistic perspective.
What a cool video
ITS A LYNCH WORM

It's like looking at Christmas
Yay more familiar faces
I’m colorblind, so the dragon looks plenty green. Lol
Love the more analytical approach. Maybe you should think about doing video essays like Lindsay does now.

Heroins hair
The colours of hilda its blue and orange
the characters have British accents but some have Canadian accents.
When they first go to the library it looked so easy and reliable because the books followed a small color palette
when is season 2? do we know?
Sometime this year.
For those who are a fan of Hilta has a really cool video about the second season: ua-cam.com/video/6du3dLwqRjU/v-deo.html
Colours*
I can’t believe he made a video without ham-handed politics.
I mean, it's a video about two colours. Would be kind of hard.
"Colour blue is a male construct!"
THEY ARENT HOUSE ELEVES they are nisse
Also i know i should not make moville Jokes but that color Ain't blue... Its very Teal
Series that brings back adventure to kids imagination. Something that New Ducktales failed at miserably.
