Not sure if its ever been implemented, but there should be a way to still see clip colors when viewing thumbnails in a bin's frame mode... perhaps in a border around the frame. I import lots of photos and it would be great to quickly organize and see them color coded. Thanks!

This is a feature in the latest versions!
It's under interface > Bin >
I don't remember the exact setting but something like show clip colours in thumbnail
