John Mayer IG Live Guitar Lesson! 7th May 2020

Quick summary: use all shapes of the pentatonic (especially the 5th one), "if you can sing it, you can play it", be vocal in your playing (listen to a lot of blues players like BB King, Jimmy Vaughan), don't play perfectly in pitch, move up in pitch as you solo (listen to Doyle Bramhall II and Jerry Garcia) but don't start too high otherwise you're stuck, define the key change (identify which notes define the I, IV and V)

what does he mean by turning a major pentatonic into a minor pentatonic? Only playing a few notes? thansk!

@@eliasostby2250 The minor pentatonic is just flattening the the third, sixth, and seventh interval. It gives a more dissonant bluesy sound that clashes nicely over a track in a major key.

Mayer has the musical and vocal chops in spades but he has also spent years perfecting both and it clearly shows. For the rest of us mortals it's all about practicing & imitating the virtuosos until we find our particular style & voice. Keep persevering!

12:13 Yes... there is a vocal equivalent for that bend.
The song Aquarius hits that exact "bend" in the lyrics "When the moon, is in the seventh house, and Jupiter, aligns with Mars..."

Amazing, just amazing. Thank you for your insight on playing. If I could sit down and jam like that I would never want to come out of lockdown and I would not put my guitar down even when sleeping lol. If this doesn’t inspire you to pick up your guitar you should be made to sell it lol.

he is a great teacher not all player are!!
teaching bass I approach with the same mind; learn tp play the line in many ways. it develops both technique and vocabulary/ears as each way sounds slightly different... (left hand technique) like scales on one two three and four strings... first finger "capo" above the equator and pinky capo below the equator... Jaco lead a lot with his pinky btw...

Im pretty sure it's just improv. He just repeats the same phrases and starts singing along to the notes, so its just probably something he came up with on the spot. But i am not completely sure...
