IMHO, Google Voice is the best way to make AND receive calls to ANY phone number in the USA and also receive ALL short and long-code One Time Passwords (OTP's) which nearly all finanical institutes, websites, government agencies and companies are using. This was filmed back in October on my last day in the US and the quality sucks, but I still wanted to post it up.

Glad you put this out there. Hopefully, it helps quiet some of the conversation and arguments. Setting up Google Voice before I left the US has worked out well for me.

You are 100% correct, and I am glad I watched this video. I put the app on my phone before I left Michigan, and now I am here in the Philippines for a half year,...what do you know, I couldn't use my debit, credit cards even though I talked with the banks before I left. Well, thank God for you and Google Voice, I was able to call them and fix the problem. Thank You!

I ported my long time US cellular number to google voice before arriving in Chiang Mai last year. Mostly use it to talk with family members and use it occasionally when I need to make calls back to the US for business purposes. I also use a VPN for watching Netflix and Pluto TV

I see lots of comments about "Thanks, I wanted to keep my current phone number". That is not what he described. He showed you how to setup a number to make free calls to the USA. He did not show you how to keep your same USA based phone number in Google Voice while living overseas.

Wifi calling, google voice & regular american number anywhere you have access to WiFi.
You're Philippines phone number should work like that in america too if you have load.

With SMART, you have to activate a code on your phone before you depart in order to use it overseas. Then when ya get back, you have to enter another text code to get it working here again. It's pretty easy, though - just got to remember to do it!

So Google voice doesn't require an active phone carrier EXCEPT during setup?
And do you give your GV number to all institutions you deal with (banks, etc)?
I hope I asked that appropriately and it was a dumb question.

i've been on google voice since 2006?. It's imperfect even in the US, especially when it comes to voicemail as some carriers don't cooperate with all the protocols, but it's great. The selfish part of me wishes there were LESS videos like this so that google doesn't even feel prompted to make more restrictions and rock the boat for us that have been quietly enjoying the status quo, but oh well. skype is ok, but i dislike their billing/payment system,

    • @PhilippineDreams
      @PhilippineDreams  Рік тому +1

Yeah, I totally hear you, but for US (and Canadian, methinks) expats, communication to the home country can literally be life or death. Plus, I got tired of hearing some expats say all you need is Skype or Whatsapp or Viber. If GV shuts down, it's gonna suck big time.

I've used gvoice for years here in the US, but I am heading to the Philippines at the end of March for a couple of weeks to explore relocation options. I was thinking of buying an inexpensive phone and chromebook, since I don't want to bring my work laptop or my work phone. Can you set up a VPN on your phone ? Is there something you'd recommend? Would I get a Philippines sim card to put in the phone when I arrived? Thanks for your guys videos, I appreciate your take on things.

    • @PhilippineDreams

I use a VPN on my phone for bank and financial stuff but you don't need a VPN for Google Voice. Philz is also requiring everyone to register their SIMs by submitting ID's but I don't know how that will affect people coming in to visit.

You should always be using a VPN on your phone.. because you never know who maybe trying to access your data.. here is one big thing that people wont tell you that VPN’s will hang up on you and hold you at a stand still .. so every now then turn them off and then back on…

The advice given, in my case did not work. Im in Philippines, had a friend buy me a ATT phone in usa. OTP password worked. Phone is registered w G voice. What failed was when using the VPN for US. The system would not give a Gvoice number. It must know that this IP is VPN. Maybe a lessor know VPN? But just did not work as anticipated.

Currently now I'm in the United States. Just like you, I wanted to keep my ties with my current phone to the United States. All for the same. I use an unlocked phone carrier is T-Mobile. Do I still need to maintain my my service with my current carrier in order to have service with Google Voice? I'm planning to be in the Philippines in November of 2023. I don't want to keep paying for service with T-Mobile if using Google Voice will be sufficient. In addition I'm planning to get a dual SIM phone so that I can have a Philippines phone number
