Hey, Ned. I’m not sure if this applies to you but go into Settings > Make and receive calls and make sure “Prefer Wi-Fi and Mobile Data”, as opposed to carrier only, is selected. I had the same issue as you did when Hangouts was phased out and I think this is what allowed me to get around re-verifying my #.

I'm a US expat working in the Middle East. What I did was last time I was in the US I got a SIM from Mint Mobile and put it in an old iPhone 6s I had laying around. When I came back to the ME, I turned off Mobile Data and turned on Wifi Calling and now I can get short codes and people in the US can call me just like I'm in the US. Downside is its like $15/month for their cheapest plan if you prepay for 1 year in advance and the phone only works on Wifi (I just keep it in my house; I have a local SIM card for my main phone). I'm looking for a different prepaid US sim provider but havent found one who does Wifi Calling yet.
i use Mint also,, here is US.. works great in socal . I forgot about the wifi calling, didnt realize can get text msgs on wifi. etc.. So I got Google Voice for all my travels and all the reasons Ned spoke of... I guess its better to always have more choices then none.

Anyone with a phone in the US can get the OTP for you. I used my parents land line and they gave me the code over a Skype call. Once you enter the code, VPN is no longer needed for GV.

I'm planning to use it from Poland to cold call Web design customers in the UK. However I think for UK I have to buy their business plan....
Also, Google voice has very good rates if you're calling from the US to a foreign country mobile. BTW SOME OF US DO NOT HAVE NUMEROUS BANK ACCOUNTS IN THE CAYMAN ISLANDS WHERE WE NEED TO CONSTANTLY CHECK OUR ASSETS. 😁😁😁

so I am going to summarize the google voice setup you have. Before coming here in 2013 you took a mobile phone with a US carrier, setup google voice app on that phone. Then came here , got a local sim and logged in to google voice app with that Philippine phone and sim and it worked. Right?
What I did was get a obi-hai 202A and setup google voice on it using the obi-hai as a voip device. I am now considering downloading the app on my local Dumaguete Philippine sim and seeing what happens. I can tell you one thing, my Bank back in March last year up and quit using google voice for any OTP . A real nightmare! I was told I had to have a local sim on a US carrier to do online banking!. I had to give them my brothers phone number and I call him every time I need to get online to do a transfer. So this video was like flash back time man.
One thing that really gets me is how you use google voice without an Obi-hai. Maybe I don't need the thing at all. I not an expert and I really don't know.

I have used Google Fi (Google's cellular service) overseas for years. It is $20/month without data. $10/gb of data (no matter the country you are in) I only use this as a backup data option. Unlimited free SMS (send and receive) to any country, great for OTPs. Calling prices depend if you are connected to wifi or not but I think the US is free over WiFi. It is not free but it definitely is the most reliable option I have used.

Hey Ned,, I am in SoCal usa,, and I set up my Google Voice, for exactly all the reasons you went over... but as I understand , because i got the idea from someone in another country, not usa.... anybody can open such account in whatever country,, and that # and country is the base for all the incoming outgoing voice calls for free... so you could open in canada,, australia, Gb, even Ph,, and then you get all the calls to and from that country of choice.. so long story short, its not just for USA... but of course i am.. and when i travel thats the choice where I bank etc etc etc.. Peace and enjoy the beach..

Thanks Ned. I got an e-mail from Google saying if I didn't use my voice number in 30 days I would lose it. Apr 1st and all I thot it might be a joke and didn't do anything about it but your alert got me to check things out. Thanks. I really would hate to lose my voice number. As you say there is nothing else out there that lets you call the states this easy or well for free. Also thanks for the heads up on the brownout tomorrow. (I'm in Siaton) Now I know to charge all the cellphones tonight.

So I decided to bite the bullet and spend $15/mo on a US phone number and SIM. I have a dual SIM card iPhone and a VPN connected to SLC. I expect to use the US phone number just for 2FA and ordering from US stores. Good info on Google Voice. I’ll look into it Max well. Thanks.

Thanks Ned, when we were stuck in Moalboal, because of lockdowns, our flight got cancelled, and I had problems with all sorts of apps, Skype, Whatsapp, Hangouts, 360talk, etc. A buddy who was in the same situation invited me to his place and use his Skype, worked good, no issues. So I am assuming Google voice would also work for us Canadians? Have fun at the beach.
im in usa,, but I read about this from someone else who travels and lives elsewhere not in usa.. I think you are correct. it works all over but the number you choose and country code, will be the destination incoming and outgoing calls for free..
Im in the philippines now with a Tmobile phone but a Philippine sim card and I cant download the app. Even if I put my VPN on my PC I cant continue
Yeah, ya really got to do it while in the USA. I was just there and activated a Mint mobile number just to get a backup Google Voice number (we now have three).
How about one of the VPN companies? Use an US VPN and authorization codes sent to your email.
I have had my magic Jack for 8 years and no problem. The MJ app on your cell will receive text and you can send text messages. I have the MJ on my PC and the app on cell.
Thanks for the tip, Ned. I've got a google fi phone and I think that should cover me for sms and 2 factor authentication with an american number...but google voice sounds like a good idea for free phone calls
@@mikec3487 After 6 months abroad they do suspend your international data roaming, but it does not affect calls or texts. Still a good option for 2 factor authentication
@@mikec3487 Ok. I've been in Southeast asia since May 2021 and it's worked fine, but just got a notice from them saying they're turning off my data roaming in a couple weeks...but that texts and calls will be unaffected. Maybe they've changed the policy for new customers?

yes google Fi works fine, i used it in Europe, Egipt, South America, works perfectly everywhere, it's automatically picking up the strongest local network, or you can choose a network manually yourself,.

Magic jack will drop calls after 10min a lot of times. Getting put on hold on an important all can really suck. I do get verification codes with magic jack. I'm not sure what a short code is.

Great information. Thanks! I'm confused about something, however. I understand that Google Voice is only a forwarding app, therefore a separate VOIP app is needed to make/receive calls and texts. If VOIP apps such as Skype don't allow 2 Factor Authentication texts, how do you manage 2FA?
GV is a dedicated VOIP. You set it up in the US, download the Android app, and when you are traveling internationally, you can call ANY US business, toll-free, cell phone or landline AND receive all long- and short-code One Time Passwords for your US banks, Amazon, Facespace and anything else needing OTPs.
Thanx for that informative video. I'm looking forward to your video on going to the Cebu consulate for your babies CRBA and passport. I will be doing that same thing in a month or so after I receive the PSA birth cert. There are very few videos on this subject. I've been following your videos for years so its like getting pertinent advice from a friend.
It's very easy. Once you get the PSA birth certificate, just email the consulate to set up an appointment. Going to the US consulate in Cebu is like being in the US - very efficient and no BS. Just make sure you bring any and all documents they request from you.
@@PhilippineDreams Thanx for the update. I spent over 4 weeks, twice a day, morning and night checking for openings on their website for an appointment for the CRBA and the passport. Each time was the same thing. No available dates or times. I sent multiple emails to the consulate asking for assistance and explaining the problem. They told me to just keep trying. Finally I contacted JRC Visa Consultancy and thru their magic they were able to acquire a viable appointment date and time. It was very much worth the minimal cost as I'm sure I would still be waiting for an appointment.
I never got into hangouts so I never used it much, I think only one time. I set up Google voice a year ago for my wife and I before we left the US.

When I am living in the P.I. (Soon I hope) I will just keep My Pixel phones (2&3) and My Google Fi service provider and pay My $30.00 a month and not mess with the load thing on P.I. phones I can call/text the USA for free. Can also text P.I. numbers for free but if I call a P.I. phone it's like 10 cents a minute. And of course I can video chat with US family/Friends on whatsapp or Google Duo for free also and Skype can be used from desktop also

Came across this vlog and wondered if you had a specific plan with google voice to be able to receive text from USA bank? Not exactly sure how to setup google voice but am planning on moving to the PH in a couple of months and want to be able to get text notifications from banks and SSA. Why not just get an account with a US carrier like Sprint or T Mobile that allows you free international data usage and use the wifi calling for overseas calls. Swap out sims or use an Iphone with dual sim ports for a local sim and an international sim.
I think you missed the point. He’s talk about having a number for free. Why pay when you don’t have to. Tip. Use a close friend or family number for the verification. The ones who don’t live abroad.
One thing I did not understand is how did you solve the issue of re-verifying when you did not have the original phone? Plz let me know. Thanks

If I call someone in the USA from the Philippines on Google Voice I get charged 20 cents a minute to My GoogleFi account Kinda Sucks!
If someone from the USA calls Me in the P.I. on Google Voice I think it's free but not the other way around
Magic jack works fine. Call there or receieve, otp etc.. i can and have called banks, govt etc. Not sure where you got that info but its incorrect. However... i do think magic jack is making changes in a few months and im not sure what that is. But ive used it for years. $9.95 a Year.
Magic Jack cannot receive short code texts and not all agencies allow an actual phone call for the OTP. Magic Jack states on their own website that they cannot receive short code texts. help.magicjack.com/faq/support/features-settings/magicapp-mobile-devices/
If you say so. I've been living out of the USA for 6 years, and use it for everything. Including any verifications, bank convos, calls to IRS, etc. Not once have I ever had an issue not being able to get or give calls of any sort. That's why i said that. But it doesn't matter. things change all the time, and magic jack as it exists may be going away. But realize this... there are reasons that hundreds of thousands of ex-pats use it. In fact, i tried to use google once and it didn't work for me. Im sure if I had plucked away at it it would have because i know many people use that as well. But I tried to register it with a bank, and they rejected it as a VOIP number, not a real one. Magic jack never does that,. By the way.. congrats on your life settling down. You are looking good. @@PhilippineDreams by the way... i have all my OTPs set up as texts, not calls. "Text messaging to your magicJack telephone number must be coming from a 10 digit telephone number. Short codes (like banks and verification codes) will not work with magicApp." But I can tell you its not reality. I use it with Amazon, Capital One, IRS site, and any number of places. Even here in Colombia, I use it. It always works and I get the codes via text through Magic Jack. So I know why you say what you say, but in reality, it isn't that way. With what I do, I need otp's almost daily.
@@grancolombia1 Guy in the video is correct. Magic Jack works with very few 2FA/OTP. It works for Amazon but it doesn't accept short code 2FA for Robinhood, my Schwab account, Wells Fargo and a bunch of others - for those I have to use my Google Voice.

I third Skype. 6.99 a month for a US #, can call any number, send/receive texts to verify accounts, etc. Extremely cheap rates. I loaded $5 about 6 months ago and still have almost all of it.
Skype (like Magic Jack) cannot receive Short Code texts for OTP/2FA.

After getting stuck in the Philippines for nine months, ( in lockdowns) The only way I can re-book a ticket was to use an app called “Rebtel” and only called America.
