Man that looked like a tough one. Maybe you should have had a spotter with you. Although the officer helped quite a bit. That was nice of him. Best wishes for drier tows in the future.
@@Smokeroux - I looked at the location on Google Earth street view after you mentioned the name of the road. Back in 2008 while visiting Tyler, TX I took a trip down to see the battleship Texas. Took the Lynchburg ferry. I capsized one time in a gator infested river in Ocala National Forest, FL. Even though I saw gators previously, I completely forgot about them while trying to get all my fishing tackle, rods, cooler, etc. Couldn't get back in the flooded sit inside kayak and finally doggy paddled/pushed it back to a boat ramp where a local who worked there asked if I had fun swimming out there. Oh I wasn't swimming... I fell in. That's when she said well you should stay out of the water, there's alligators in there. That sent a chill down my spine all the splashing around I did.
Agreed alot of unnecessary risk here for a total loss vehicle. We tow for 23 police departments, state, and prosecutor office. This is a diver call. Contrary to his response no police department could or would force a tow guy into water at night without proper ppe. Sorry Dustin I like your content but this was a bad call. Your life is not worth any rotation call.
I disagree. Tell them you’re not going to do what they called you to do, and you’re getting kicked off the scene and they’re calling the next one on rotation. This occupation is full of risks. If you’re not willing to take them, there are plenty of other jobs out there for you. I did my job, and went home safe. That’s what matters.
@Towtruck_Dustin risk vs reward. In the video you said not a great swimmer. So why the risk. We lose one tow guy every six days on average. Are you trying to be on the wall? No job is worth your life. But hey what do I know only been doing heavy recovery for 25 years. Swim on and do it for clicks and views. We keep doing things safely up here.
I had no idea that tow drivers had to go into the water to retrieve vehicles. I thought that police departments had divers to do all the under water stuff and you just pulled the vehicle out. No matter how much money you make I don’t think it’s enough for what you do.
@@Towtruck_Dustin You’re one of the lucky ones that actually love your job. By the end of my career in management I was only in it for the money and just waiting to turn 62 so I can retire early. Did that last year and now I’m happy again! I’m very impressed with your knowledge in what you do and you make it interesting.
If they are having an issue with cars going off the road there , then why not add some type of a barrier to keep vehicles from driving off the road into the ditch
Done it before. Had one go off the end of a ramp at speed, right after a cold front. It was around 40°, and police called rotation on it. That’s the only time in my life I’ve ever been hyperthermic. It was quite the experience.
What was that yellow metal thing you attached to the center back of your flatbed and what is its purpose? Is there some reason you have to fish that BMW out at night rather than wait a few hours until daylight? It seems particularly risky to recover this vehicle at night. I thought about snakes (particularly water moccasins) and alligators !! You are really brave !
Because on rollbacks, when you run a vehicle all the way up your bed with 100ft cable you have 3-4 wraps of line, which cuts your winches capacity dramatically. For a wheel lift truck that the winches are only used for recovery, it’s fine. Not so for a rollback.
And they would have called next up and you’d go home without getting payed. It’s your responsibility to call a diver if you don’t want to get wet, but in some situations you also can’t charge for it either when you’re contracted to be there. You have to go by the department that you’re towing for’s rates.
I did some reporting years ago, and I never encountered a police department that expected a tow truck driver to handle a submerged vehicle before that vehicle had been inspected first by a diver. If the situation is different in Texas, I have to think the less of the authorities there.@@Towtruck_Dustin
I feel sorry for you man I'm hoping here in the near future you don't have to go swimming anymore and hopefully have somebody that can fish some lines to hook the cars with and that way you don't have to worry about nothing else except wench in the vehicles
If you can't swim then why are you putting the boot's on to fill up with water to make it harder to swim by filling up with water and making it harder to swim. other wise you have smartz on towing. good job on other vid's
Because I wasn’t going in barefoot. And I wasn’t ruining my leather boots. The only other footwear I had at the time was my mud boots. So what’s what I wore. Otherwise, I agree it wasn’t the best choice of footwear.
Because the cops can’t have an officer waiting for hours for something that can be done right then. There was no reason to wait. Get clear of the scene so everyone can get safe and handle other calls.
Lol? That’s funny. Obviously you’re wrong. That might have been your choice, but on a police call, you don’t have time to wait for a second truck to show up. You just get the job done. Of which I did. Personally, I like running the flatbed. But that’s my preference.
I would have told him do it to save the circumstances I want to pull that out until first daybreak because no matter how quick you pull that car out of water that car is totaled
Unfortunately on these accident scenes like this I don’t have time to setup a bunch of lights, Plus I don’t want to get everything wet. nor do I have room on this truck to carry everything.
You know if you would have put your bed down you could have loded it without moving the truck again. When I first time I watched you I was watching someone that had some intelligence, But each time after then It is like you are using that funny weed or some thing because you aren't using any smarts.
The awesome part of this craft is that there are so many ways to do the same task. Just because I didn’t do it the way you would have, doesn’t mean I did anything wrong. The only reason I winched the whole time was to pull from a higher angle, so it would come over the bank easier and not want to hang up.
Talk about above and beyond! They are lucky to have you!
You need to get a water recovery surcharge on that one.

I’m most situations I’d rather work alone.
But most of the time the other drivers are either on their own calls, or have already been out working.
@@Towtruck_Dustin certainly understand that. You really have to be prepared for just about anything, don’t you?
