Very valuable and informative video Stefan! As a person interested in remote travel that’s never experienced it, I can say that this seems very daunting. But you’ve done a great job of simplifying each requirement! Seems like a very expensive ordeal!
You efforts creating this video are really appreciated...almost covered every aspects with decent B-role running in the background...not many of such good videos are found these days.
Extremely professional and comprehensive. At the same level as Tom Shepard's bible on overland expeditions. I don't know the Simpson desert so can't make any meaningful comment but most other expeditions wouldn't require this level of preparation. One small suggestion - I have resisted locking diffs (apart from the central locker which is OE) because of the complexity. I find that limited slip diffs give a very useful improvement in traction although they don't work unless the wheels are touching the ground of course. They are "fit and forget". This video will be invaluable to anyone who is planning this trip. Well done.
I would agree a good ATB is also a good option and i used to have one in the front of my Discovery 2 (eventually changed to for a locker though as it gave me more control for rock climbing and was not reactive) never used one in Sand though wonder if it can make things harder as it still reactive.
It blows me away people travel so remote without the proper gear like tyre change equipment Thanks for the video this was great information and I’ll be watching this again just as a reminder for other trips Cheers mate 🤙
Wow Stefan. Thanks a million as I also will be doing the Simpson desert in June, but unlike you it's it first time. West to East. Excellent info and I hope we bump into each other. 👍
Appreciate the effort you put into this, heaps of priceless information here. Only one small criticism - you didn't tell us how much beer to take on a crossing haha!
Informative and a great summary 👍 I too do not carry a high lift jack. I've never had the need to use one (touch wood it stays that way). It's just an extra unnecessary weight to carry. As I have a FJZ80 (ie. petrol), fuel is my biggest concern for a Simpson Desert crossing. I've been told, to double the average on-road fuel consumption of your 4WD, to get an average Simpson Desert fuel consumption. For me that means to double my average on-road fuel consumption of 18L/100km (36L/100kms!). Base on this, to do the crossing between Mt Dare to Birdsville via the French Line, I'll need an additional 60L on top of the 145L on-board tanks. Yikes! Though when driving on Stockton Beach, I usually get an average of around 25-26L/100km. I'll need to look into this more.
You should be right. I know two people who have crossed the Simpson on an FJ Cruiser and a petrol Pajero, carrying only 2 spare jerry cans of fuel each (40L extra). The FJ Cruiser, only needing to use one for the trip.
great video ! very interesting and informative! I have a raised air intake but I call it a snorkle ! you definitely got some incredible footage along your journey ! well done ! looks like you had a great adventurous trip!
I agree that the company provided hard cases for tool sets should be replaced with a soft case. Although the contents of plastic cases are immediately verifiable, the cases deteriorate. Soft cases fit into available vehicle storage spaces more easily.
I see you use a Coleman white fuel stove. I find they are way more efficient than propane for the weight and burn hotter. I also live at high altitude, so propane doesn't always work under low pressure. Had mine 20 yrs and never an issue🤠
Many thanks for this excellent informative video. Awaiting part 2 with eager anticipation. Do you have any comment on Boab 55l diesel fuel tank mounted on the roof rack?
Question on trailer Excellent video as the outback loop coming and home vie the Simpson desert back to Brisbane is planed this winter However I was going to take my patriot camper for the loop and French line home Should I consider an alternative crossing or just swag it Thanks heaps again Looking forward to part 2
Absolutely fantastic videos I’ve only just discovered them and about to do Simpson desert trip. I must admit not having used many GPS applications in the past (apart from Mud Maps 3) I am not sure whether to just convert to Memory Maps after your reviews, or if I should use Explore Oz? Or perhaps should I be using both? Any thoughts you have would be appreciated
the new Memory Maps for all should be out any day now so I wait for that, for the Desert MM is better than ExplorOz however if you can afforded having both is a good option
Its not a challenge anymore and its become a highway with traffic problems. Motorcyclists are crossing it in two days unassisted. Now if you want a challenge there is still the Canning. Thats an achievement.
I don't think so, just make sure you don't get the last drop out of the tanks, most outback fuel stations would not be in business if they sold contaminated fuel.
@@AlloffroadAu It was an advert for a bed mattress with no option to skip, thankfully it has now been replaced with a normal one so I'll watch your video now :)
A lot of effort went in to this going trough many years of archive footage, I hope you enjoy.
Brilliant video Stefan, heaps of great info. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
Thanks Stefan, much appreciated. Excellent information
Comprehensive. A must view for anyone looking to tackle the Simpson Desert. You can tell this guide was created from experience. Nicely done. 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Stefan, you should reach out to SA parks and see if they are interested in hosting the video. Would benifit many.

thanks mate, yes the initial set up cost a little but subsequent trips are ok then

Great video for the desert "virgins". Looking forward to Part 2. Will be out there again in July/August, can't wait :-)
I always love seeing what people eat on the road. Great episode!

Great viewing Stefan, we are planning our trip to the Canning in July and are hoping to get to the Queen Desert Baths, it looks great.
one of my all-time favourite spots
Your experience shows in this brilliant, informative video mate.
Planning our first run in ‘24 and this here is perfect advice Stefan👌👌
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant. So much information and so clear. Thanks for the hard work.
My pleasure!

lol sorry I get away with a 6 pack on a 3 week trip so my advice would not be helpful for most
15l/100 km is my rule of thumb :-)

Stockton fuel figures should be quite accurate mate

As comprehensive as it gets. I loved it!

if it's sealed I also call it a Snorkel but most installers won't seal them unless you ask so I call them in general raised air intakes
G'day mate very informative vid and intertaining,a lot of people don't realize what
is evolved in desert travel. So that should help. Thanks😎
Glad you enjoyed it
Sehr informativ. Nach unserem crossing 2018 werden wir dieses Jahr noch die Madigan line machen.
I like your compact Buffalo ultimate tyre repair kit but cant find it. Where are they sold?, ty in advance.
to be honest it was in one of my cars I unfortunately have also never seen it in a store

yep would be great to offer a Hardshell option and a roll option ideally with a pocket for each part so you can still keep an easy overview
Thank you for this great video, very good and professional information!
Greetings Michael

yes I love the stove my one is now 9 years old and I only once changed the seals
Many thanks for this excellent informative video. Awaiting part 2 with eager anticipation. Do you have any comment on Boab 55l diesel fuel tank mounted on the roof rack?
second Part will go in to roof racks in detail
I saw different stoves in this video. Can you share with us what stoves they are and what has been your favorite to use?
I use a Coleman 533 Dual Fuel Stove and a JetBoil for water boiling
Great work Mate
Look forward to part 2
Diesel $2.71 at Birdsville at the moment
Great piece mate, thanks.
No problem 👍
hoping to do Simpson this year, great advice and info, thank you

yea easier in regards to Dunes but more remote, and the corrugation is bad. ua-cam.com/play/PLA2XSq4ONOVI72TUv_aTOyozhNHpiMOBJ.html
Great video! Do you think a secondary fuel filter is required?
I don't think so, just make sure you don't get the last drop out of the tanks, most outback fuel stations would not be in business if they sold contaminated fuel.
Yeah fair point, thanks again!
Do you use Fyrlyt lights? I thought I saw them on your car. Cheers
yes had the Nemesis on the Defender a few years ago.
Do you offer any training for the people who want to learn proper off roading.
I do individual training occasionally if I have time
Excellent info.

Comment no. 1!!!
Much rather a HF radio then sat phone.
all have Pros and Cons but unless you are already a radio nut a Sat phone is a way easier option to HF.
All the equipment, expensive …
yes good stuff cost, 4 wd is no cheap hobby alone because of fuel and maintenance cost
Sorry, can't even watch your video because of a 7min 28second advert at the start!
That sounds strange. Ads are done by UA-cam, but 7 minutes sounds crazy. If you have YT premium, you won't see ads on any video
@@AlloffroadAu It was an advert for a bed mattress with no option to skip, thankfully it has now been replaced with a normal one so I'll watch your video now :)
very strange Google bug I assume never heard or seen that before
