  • Hi guys, here is a quick video to show you how you can save lots of money. If you use gas camping stoves then you must purchase a gas canister filler. You can buy these off Amazon for £10 (see link below).
    I use a gas camp stove so I go through a lot of gas each year. I always take 100g or 200g canisters. These are almost as expensive as the big 400g canister.
    £10 Gas Canister Filler amzn.to/3dYN5M6
    To fill up the camping gas canister simply screw the valve to the big canister, then attach the empty small canister on top. Then turn it over the and turn the valve to let the liquid gas run from the top full canister into the bottom empty canister. Its really simple!

    Thanks, Andy

    Please note the amazon link is what everyone sees and pays but I receive a miniscule finders fee when people use the link. It all goes back into backpacking gear!

    I was looking at these. Does it work on gas pressure or gravity i.e. is it possible (and have you ever) managed to completley empty the last bit of gas from a big canister in to a little one? Thanks

    • @BackpackingUK
      @BackpackingUK  3 роки тому +7

      Gravity. The liquid gas flows down into the empty canister. Sometimes you need to give it a little jiggle to help it fill right up towards the end.

      @@BackpackingUK ah thanks for the reply. I'll get one as I got 2 bigger canisters that I won't use for wild camping. Cheers for the vids. Was in the lakes yesterday from honister pass to great gable, kirk fell and some others. Didn't expect the snow! Some others camped last night but abandoned today as high winds and the forecast rain. Cheers.

    Don't forget to put recieving can in the fridge for half hour before filling, this will allow the source gas to fill quicker. And remember to use your scales to check the weights, less the canister

      Never knew about putting it in the fridge beforehand, thanks for that 👍

      No need to cool the receiving canister. Just empty the pressure of the receiving canister using the transfer valve. You are good to go.

    I would suggest weighing the small cans before ever using them and writing this measurement on the bottom of the can. You should then use this measurement and a digital scale to check during the process if you getting close and make sure you don't go over. I also advise like overs have to pop the receiving can (smaller) in the freezer for 15-20 mins before to help create a negative vacuum.
    For example, my smallest can states a weight of 100g which is just the fuel but the total weight was 195g meaning the can weighs 95g.

      Hey Joseph, Could you elaborate on the reasoning behind the freezing and negative vacuum? Cheers.

    • @neovo903
      @neovo903 8 місяців тому

      @@scottishrebels There's no such thing as a "negative vacuum" but what placing the receiving canister in the fridge means the pressure inside drops, this maximises the pressure differential between the doner canister and the receiving canister and increases the rate of transfer of gas.

    I do this to empty all my almost used up canisters from my DofE expeditions. Stick a half full one in the freezer and then top it up with the dregs from the almost empty ones. I then pierce the empty ones and recycle them. I got rid of 8 canisters last time I did it. I use the flipfuel adapter.

    Lol Andy I wish you uploaded this a few days ago, I had one of these delivered this morning as the gas seems to be rocketing in price or just unavailable, I bought that type & an adaptor for the long cannister type both work great. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻

      I’ve noticed gas has shot up too. Plus it took me 2 months to get patio gas. I thought I was going to have to go without BBQ’s this year 😫

    Sooo....experemented putting the receiving canister in the freezer for 10 to 15 mins and it absolutely sucked the gas from the warmer canister.... Hot (cold) tip!

      @@BackpackingUK yeah, it does, brilliantly. Even better if you warm the other one...... Dip it in some warm water for a few secs. Creates more of a temp and pressure difference between them I assume. Cheers for the original idea anyway👍

    How do you know when it's full or close to being full?

    • @BackpackingUK
      @BackpackingUK  3 місяці тому +1

      Ideally you should weigh it. However, it will naturally stop when it's full. The only problem with this it may be over-full so when you first use it the flame could be too intense.
