I think as far as riffs and runs go, I would say it was Aretha who really started a lot of that and Vanessa and the Clarks took it and ran with it. Remember that all of them are from Detroit (The Land Of Singers). I'm so proud to be from Michigan when I hear talent and gifting like this.
True remember Karen idolized Aretha Franklin, she studied her music, while Dorinda loved Shirley Ceaser, and Twinkie Stevie Wonder and many other musicians!
Forgiven is on one of the early UNAC-5 LP's by Kenneth Ward. All is Well is on the LP titled COGIC presents: Jesus Is The Light Of My Life, which is a Betty Nelson LP.
I agree Jomat9, but even in the error everyone kept going; VBA still pulled it off and sounds great. I think every singer experiences that once or twice in their life but like her you just keep moving. Very nice song.
First of all... She shouldnt be a diva about it and call him out the way she did..twice..She should be focused on ministering to peolpe and praising the one who gave his son....
Whoever was on that organ or in that band was a hot mess. I would've walked off too. Even Mattie was looking around the choir to the band stand like, "who in the world is playing over there? Where's my shoe?" LOL
she said, "he took me up higher!" then somebody said, "sang girl" and gave her the next part. ROTFL and who is that alto who can't find her note at 6:49. remember, back in the day it was common practice to correct someone on the spot. i remember singing in a concert and the organist wasn't paying attention and the director was trying to go somewhere different. the director grabbed the nearest thing and threw it at the organist and yelled "pay attention" in the middle of the concert. LOL
At 3:47 she looked at the musician and said, "yea, you". Later she said, "he took me up higher". Let's face it people. Let's not blame the musician. Dr. Mattie Moss Clark is directing in this video. He/she would not have modulated without Dr.Clark's signal. Don't forget, Dr. Clark would not hesitate to embarrass someone for mistakes or underperforming. It seems the only person not aware of the key change was VBA. Further, she walks off and Dr. Clark continues the song with Rev. Wright.
@jovta22 Well, In Momma Mattie's defense: 1) The camera stayed on Vanessa the whole time the incident went down 2) It happened kinda of fast 3) I did hear Momma Mattie in the background giving words. I know you meant any harm. Was just making you aware of a couple things you might have missed that I observed. Be blessed!!!
midnighthour.... VBA was singing in MMC choir at a very young age leading songs on her LP. I would imagine the "GIRLS" were still practicing. Now you know, I think VBA is a bit older than they are.
mauricezjones.... man........lol...lol...lol..oooh....lol...lol.. That's what she get for being a COGIC DIVA! Thanks for clearing everything up my man....LOL....LOL.....LOL.....LOL....LOL........... whooo.....hoo...hoo..hoo..I din't never know what she was saying in the song. Bless You...lol...lol..lol.
2:53-3:12 what a read...lol I woulda hate to of been the musician who messed the key change up or whatever happened...lol but she still killed it...lol
OK basically what happened was Vanessa fumbled the words to the end of the first verse and instead sung the words to the end of the second verse, so she probably wasn't expecting the modulation when it happened. IT WAS NOT THE MUSICIAN'S FAULT!!!!!!! I'm sure Vanessa probably apologized to him later. This is coming from a HUGE VBA fan, and I am also both a singer and a musician so I know how it is on both sides.
Could Vanessa possibly be the "true" voice of Gospel music. I mean c'mon...whoe else was doing it like this back then, other than the Clarks, and if my info is correct (please correct me if it ain't) she was doing her thing a little while before them.
@@Swanky723 Actually that’s the same year Vanessa began singing in the Michigan state choir. Denise Clark has Vanessa as her Maid of honor in her wedding because they were best friends at the time. She was right along with them. Her and Gwen Morton sister of Bishop Paul Morton.
first of all that is not true the clarks put alums out before Vanessa. They all came up together. You are right the clarks didn't used to run like that back then, but there style evolved, but i wouldn't say they got it from Vanessa I think they gleaned and learned from each other
I'm looking for 2 songs that I can't seem to find anywhere - "Forgiven" and "All is Well" can anyone help? I thought they were Mattie Moss Clarke pieces but I'm drawing a blank.
And did you see her just walk away from the mic and left the choir hanging and Mr. Clean had to finish the song..... OK... now I know she is crazy... LOL.
I can see why she looked like that! They ain't rehearse that! The key was already a challenge and pushing her to the edge of her range, he made it very difficult and a "screamer" for her!
I’ll just say this at the modulation The organist screwed it up because he went back down to see Sharp very very quickly for like a second after he had already made the transition to The key of D natural using the five in the baseline over the four chord so was a five over four but Vanessa was still wrong because she should never have called him out on stage and over the mic that was very unprofessional
She didn't call him out. He messed up and she's the one out front. Either way a modulation in the wrong place is a huge no. Vanessa saved it but if you notice he also screwed the choir up. They weren't ready, so she led them. But long story short Go for the message people and leave the unnecessary judgement to people of the world.
what is 345? ? ? ? or Who is 345 ? ? ? and every musician should know this song in their sleep. and that Trumpet is still playing wild wrong notes throughout the song, now.... can they hear? ? ? ? ? can you hear it?
Yeah trumpet player completely wild doesn’t even know what is playing organist did pretty good into the key change but he messed up the key change he didn’t play the change with confidence either he wasn’t even sure where the change was because he took the key down quick and then switched back to D again but Vanessa was wrong for calling them out that’s unprofessional
The organist seemed to be a little in over his head I don't know if he practiced with them but it doesn not really sound like it. If it were me (V.B)I would have continued singing like nothing was wrng whch is wht Iv bn know to do. Talk to him later thats what you do.
I’m so sick of these Arrogant Church Folk!! She was wrong. The music Modulates! It’s ridiculous how many “saints” are gonna be surprised on Judgment Day!! Her attitude has always been this way.. there’s a lot mean spirited Devils in the church!! Dr. MATTIE should’ve thrown a shoe her way!!!
WOW i love dis song but dang she was wrong fo puttin da musician on blast like dat, she woulda gotten da finger right then in FRONT of EVERYBODY dat was wrong!!!
well it was messed up how she calle out the piano man but hey he did do horrible. and besides that man i love her voice. she has to be one of the best singers ive ever heard in my life
OK ... the whole exaggerated deal over the key change was so uncalled for and very ametuar..... Sure the musician made a mistake .... but there was no cause for the open attitude in front of the full congregation !!
This era of church was everythannnggg..❤ Today's church really sucks in comparison..
So so Greatful to God, I lived this era of church.
People..... Leave your negative comments to yourself. Not on my page thank you
Actually at "If riches could've paid the debt" there's is a modulation there from C# to D major!
yes God so loved the world that why i love the Lord
Pastor Shirley Caesar does that at her church in Raleigh. I have seen up stand up and give the choir their parts while they were singing a song.
kierra!!!!! aww :))
Sing!! Vanessa!!
The only thing I didn't care for at these COGIC meetings was "Uncle Billy Ray" playing the trombone while we were singing...
🤣
I think as far as riffs and runs go, I would say it was Aretha who really started a lot of that and Vanessa and the Clarks took it and ran with it. Remember that all of them are from Detroit (The Land Of Singers). I'm so proud to be from Michigan when I hear talent and gifting like this.
I agree
True remember Karen idolized Aretha Franklin, she studied her music, while Dorinda loved Shirley Ceaser, and Twinkie Stevie Wonder and many other musicians!
You need to look further back than Aretha.
I disagree
Forgiven is on one of the early UNAC-5 LP's by Kenneth Ward.
All is Well is on the LP titled

I agree Jomat9, but even in the error everyone kept going; VBA still pulled it off and sounds great. I think every singer experiences that once or twice in their life but like her you just keep moving. Very nice song.
Ohhhh!!!
The person who sang at the end was Rev. Richard "Mr. Clean" White.
For those who are wondering Whitney Houston @3:05 back left side.
she said, "he took me up higher!" then somebody said, "sang girl" and gave her the next part. ROTFL
and who is that alto who can't find her note at 6:49.

Jomat9 absolutely correct and that is how Dr. Clark does what she does
@jovta22 Well, In Momma Mattie's defense: 1) The camera stayed on Vanessa the whole time the incident went down 2) It happened kinda of fast 3) I did hear Momma Mattie in the background giving words. I know you meant any harm. Was just making you aware of a couple things you might have missed that I observed. Be blessed!!!
tmstrong....
If you listen to this vid you will hear the modulation. plus when Dr. Clark does a song most time she doe not do it the same way twice.
midnighthour....
VBA was singing in MMC choir at a very young age leading songs on her LP. I would imagine the "GIRLS" were still practicing. Now you know, I think VBA is a bit older than they are.
This was probably 1989, if Kierra Sheard is the little girl in the video. Cause she was born in 1987
mauricezjones....
man........lol...lol...lol..oooh....lol...lol..
Vanessa can sing!!!!!!!!!
I’ll tell you one thing she wouldn’t have said that to Twinkie Clark
2:53-3:12 what a read...lol I woulda hate to of been the musician who messed the key change up or whatever happened...lol but she still killed it...lol
Oh yes, this song is still VERY meaningful, I was just responding to someone else that asked if this choir was still that size...
OK basically what happened was Vanessa fumbled the words to the end of the first verse and instead sung the words to the end of the second verse, so she probably wasn't expecting the modulation when it happened. IT WAS NOT THE MUSICIAN'S FAULT!!!!!!! I'm sure Vanessa probably apologized to him later.

loopyman76 LOL She didn't apologize LOL! She's VBA and that's why I love her!

@@Swanky723 Actually that’s the same year Vanessa began singing in the Michigan state choir. Denise Clark has Vanessa as her Maid of honor in her wedding because they were best friends at the time. She was right along with them. Her and Gwen Morton sister of Bishop Paul Morton.

right... they obviously hadn't rehearsed and she's bad-talking the musician and being a complete unprofessional.
I love Vanessa but that choir and the musicians were awful!
they really sound bad!!!!
+Billy Craion Absolutely horrible. I wonder why Dr. Clark didn't tell that horn player to sit down somewhere.
OK ... the whole exaggerated deal over the key change was so uncalled for and very ametuar..... Sure the musician made a mistake .... but there was no cause for the open attitude in front of the full congregation !!
