Actually Beethoven was just beginning to lose his hearing at the time he wrote this and didn't really hard of hearing until much later. But the imagination needed - even with perfect ears - to create this work is unimaginable.

The idea of not clapping between movements is relatively new.
It was not uncommon to not only applaud but to demand an encore of a particularly brilliant movement. This true of Mozart through Mahler symphonies in Europe. As a conductor, of over 40 years experience, I remember when I was young I hated when people applauded between mvmts. Then I reached a conclusion that has stayed with me. It occurred to me that those who were clapping had never gone to a symphonic concert before, did not know the "etiquette" and clapped because they like what they were hearing for the first time. I realized how wonderful that was and ever since I have loved it whenever I conduct,

I've not heard of anyone clapping between movements except in military band concerts, and then it is usually discouraged.

That's why Beethoven created the Piano-Forte concept. To not let people sleep in the concert after they drunk so much. Nobody was really interested in music until Beethoven. People was a the concert house only cose "social life". Very much like nowdays.

A 'podium' is what one stands on (from Latin "pes, pedis," foot). The conductor is indeed standing on a podium. What he does not use is a lectern, the stand on which a score would be placed, if he used one.

Also, I was very impressed with the nuanced articulation of the orchestra's understanding of the conductor. Also, the image of the switcher for switching between multiple TV camera images is wonderful and I was impressed. Also, I was impressed by the camera splitting video of the musical instrument player of the switcher that can read the sheet music and the sheet music of the multiple TV camera image switching switcher. 🙌👍❤️ Thank you. 😊 Commenting.

      Exactly !
And it seems imho, that composing this magnificent symphony ,
      with the royal D-major splendour
and the two up-lifting and highly energetic main themes of the enthralling first movement ,
with the enchanting beauty of the "Larghetto" and its tender melody,
with the grim humour of its "Scherzo"
      and with the sheer vigour,
agressive dynamics, sharp contrasts and the rhythmic ecstasy of its final movement,
was his way or even his personal cure to overcome his deep depression and desperation with even suicidal thoughts, that had befallen him, when he realized ,
that his hearing problems were obviously uncurable and would lead to progredient loss of his hearing until clinic deafness.
So his second symphony is very special in this regard indeed .

I think, by this time, he had really learned about the orchestra. At 31 or 32, he was about to deal with the biggest challenge a musician can face, and then move on to greatness.

There were no limits of boundaries for Beethoven, he composed pieces which surpassed among creativity even when his deafness reach its level of profoundness. In fact, he was conveying to us his true distress and anguish through his music. Music like this was intended from Beethoven, to make the listener listen and not to treat it as background entertainment. That's what really stirs up the big questions in people's minds about Beethoven's abilities which alienates many people the fact that this music, Symphony no. 2 was created at the time before Beethoven realized he was beginning to lose his sense of hearing. The music stayed consistent throughout his life and be kept producing such inspirational, original music. People like Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Haydn and Handel had their own originality. Despite people like Beethoven and possibly Mozart had compositions that were impacted by, for example, Mozart was possibly impacted by works of Bach when he was a child, and the early works of Beethoven were heavily impacted by Mozart and Haydn (Haydn especially) but Beethoven mostly shows his originality and unique motifs. A true legend of his age and still has his obsessive and bewilderingly impressive impact on people today! Whether it'd be contemporary modern composers or the admirers and listeners of this great age!

This is such a nice piece! I had to repeat the finale; which seems to me a text-book example of brisk, suave and smooth sailing brava. ‘Ole Ludwig always knew “whereof he affirmed” and with consummate skill and foresight made us believe we actually know our way to the city. Just to think the EROICA was just around the bend and an entirely new and quite bizarre galaxy. With a funeral March like the grandest, soaring cathedral; crystal and sublime. Never a dull moment with this genius! PWG

As close to perfect as is possible in a live performance - quite staggering. All section principals play their hearts out, principal clarinet and bassoon are good enough to eat. Those horn players deserve a bonus, beautiful sound overall. Am almost speechless with admiration.

First off I am a Beethoven fan. Daniel Barenboim has come a long way from accomplished pianist to conductor. I have Beethoven's five piano concertos conducted by Otto Klemperer who requested Mr Barenboim to play the piano. Mr Barenboim enjoys conducting Beethoven's compositions, one can see it by his demeanour. I hope others enjoy watching Mr Barenboim's conducting Beethoven for music's sake.

Cellos in the middle with the 1st violins and 2nd violins on the outer edges is sometimes a preferred setup, depending of course on the repertoire. Music such as this, with prominent cello lines and very distinctive parts between the two violin sections, is advantageous in that it allows the cello sound to come more to the fore when needed and provides a stereo effect with the 1st and 2nd violins separated.

Trying to soldier on and be cheerful, but there are sudden outbursts of anger and sadness with its sudden dynamic contrasts and abrupt shifts from major to minor. All in all, a very determined piece, Beethoven declaring to the world that he was not going to let his affliction beat him.

This is the Rodney Dangerfield of Beethoven's symphonies: it don't get no respect. The Larghetto is just sublime, but while the Scherzo may sound tame today, it was one of the maddest things written up to that point and the critics hated it.
I like the way the basses come through clearly in this recording. This symphony was written not long after Beethoven met Dragonetti, who inspired Beethoven to pay more attention to the bass parts, making them do more than just double the cello parts.

Barenboim is a very gret pianit, bout also an immense conductor. I attende to a concert in Berlin about one month ago, where he conducted a Haydn symphony, the Schumann 4th symphony, and Beethoven's 4th piano concerto with Maria Joao Pires. But he iq also conducting works by Boulez.
