I clicked over out of curiousity because I'm an Alaskan (50+ years) and always wonder how our great state is being portrayed, but WOW! I've driven the Alcan hundreds of times, many times in an RV, and you guys NAILED IT! Beautifully filmed, absolutely right on-target, superb advice! And I had to chuckle at "inverted potholes," that's a new one for me! LOL! Subscriber for sure!
I was born in Fairbanks, my maternal grandparents decided to settle in Alaska after my grandfather had served there during WWII, as best as we can gather from my grandmother, she drove “the highway” 14 times! Her grandmother had moved to Oregon in a covered wagon...wow how much progress in just a few generations! Great channel and thanks for all the info as we research if we want to dabble with RV ownership for short trips.
Wow, Ed! That's incredible... 14 times!? It's hard to imagine doing that drive that many times, let alone back when the condition of the road probably wasn't as good as it is now. So neat to think about! So glad you enjoyed our video, RV life is certainly an adventure! -Katelyn
We drove the Alaskan Highway years ago. Late 70's. Wasn't paved.1500 miles of gravel. Totally destroyed my dad's LTD. Broken windshield. Damaged headlights. Destroyed brake system by the time we got to Anchorage. Very, very beautiful scenery. On the way back they closed the "highway" at Laird Hot Springs due to a very wet Spring. The campground filled up fast. There was even a lady baking bread. Someone with a parrot. And bears were a big problem. Moose too. It was quite a trip.
Wow, that is quite a different experience, but I love the quirkiness of the Liard Hot Springs campground story. Sure the highway is paved now, but outside of the total destruction of vehicles, the 70s version sounds pretty amazing! Thanks for watching, Diego! -Howard
My beloved and I had an Alaskan cruise planned to take this year in July to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. Keyword being: "HAD". First came COVID, second came husbands cancer, third came husbands stroke in July. Will we ever try to go? Probably not. He can't get around very well now and still remains very fatigued. Plus the financial crisis that took place with the stock market this year. We lost 12 double room for 2 people with a private balcony view cruises worth of money in about a week. So, now we're pretty tight with our expenditures. I'm not angry about it. What does getting angry about it profit me or my husband. It's just the way stuff happens sometimes. This taught both of us to be extremely patient. So, back to your travels and awesome videos......ya'll have the way and means, plus superb talent to travel for us. You take us places and show us things we'll never get to experience. Plus the doggos are such a cute bonus.😊 Thank you for sharing your sight seeing and jet setting. It's much appreciated. ❤
Oh gosh 😣❤ You definitely have had a lot to deal with, but your outlook and positivity is inspiring! You're right, getting angry doesn't do us any good...only hurts you internally. We're so glad we can take you there virtually! We'll have much more to share on Alaska, for sure! 💕 Sending you big hugs! -Katelyn
I've been wanting to go to Alaska with our RV for quite some time now and the tips you provided are very helpful, nice and concise. Thanks for posting it!
I lived up there for over 10 years. So glad you mentioned on watching out for Bears. Moose are also animals that can kill you and they roam around even all thru Anchorage. Love yall's videos. We really enjoy them.
Hi Sandra! Oh wow, where in AK did you live? I bet that was incredible. Yes, always a good reminder about wildlife. That's a good point about Moose, I don't think some people realize how dangerous they can be. We sadly saw one run out in front of an elderly woman driving in front of us. She hit him, but he was so much bigger than her car, the car took the brunt of it. Luckily she was ok, just shaken! Thanks so much for always supporting our channel! -Katelyn
@@NewstateNomads We lived in Anchorage, then out in the valley (Palmer and Wasilla). So glad to hear that lady was ok. We had a moose run out of the woods and hit our mirror and he had a "oh No" look on his face as we had the same look. then he ran away. lol. Alaska is such a beautiful place to visit. So glad yall got to enjoy it. We still have two of our kids and 3 grandchildren living there. We were up there at the beginning of March to see our grandchild born. Just returned from a camping trip to Alaska- the guides (Alaska Mountain Guides) we were with reserved the "Hey Bear" chant for when there was actually a bear right there (happened fairly frequently), so when walking they would instead shout "Hey Human Here" or something like that.
Wow so exciting. This is my goal. Just got an RV in the last month. Definitely on my list of places to explore. Thanks for all the great tips in this video and the one on Alaska that I saw prior to this one

I love the Milepost! Trying to use the Milepost for planning is not what I recommend. You read it AS you drive...because it tells you mile by mile, what you are seeing...like the name and elevation of the mountain off to the right, and the distance to the next creek and it’s name and the kind of fish in the creek. That is where the Milepost outperforms everything else.
Dani, that's a great way to look at the Milepost and you're right it shines in the mile by mile. The suggested routes in the book were very helpful, too. However, that single sheet as I mentioned from the visitors center (link on our site) was an incredible resource. Thanks so much for watching! -Howard

Nice. I plan on spending at least a month exploring Canada when I get to head up to see Alaska. It's the only state I haven't been to. Gotta check out the northern lights with my pups.
Canada is incredibly beautiful. The journey just to get up to Alaska is one of the best parts. That's awesome it's your last state to check off! 😊 I'm sure the pups with love it too. Thanks for watching our video! -Katelyn
I so want to venture up there. I did the mileage and from here (Md) to this town in Washington I picked, it is the same mileage from that town to Anchorage. It’s amazing just how far up Alaska is. Looks beautiful and I love some of those boondock sites I’ve seen. Can’t wait to see your other videos. 👍🏼

Thank you very much for this (and future) content about Alaska. My wife and I are hoping that in 2022 we'll be able to include Alaska in a 4-5 mth trip out west so I've "liked" and saved this video to my library. At some point would you please share your experiences in Chernobyl. That is somewhere that I'm sure we'll never go but I must admit that I have a certain morbid fascination with the place.
Hi Bob! So glad you enjoyed our video, we're looking forward to sharing more. That's great your planning a trip up in 2022! It's incredible. So glad you brought up Chernobyl, that's on our list of future videos. We weren't vlogging then either, but we have a ton of great footage and pictures to share. The experience was one we definitely want to talk about! It was so humbling to see it in person. -Katelyn
We were also there in 2019... I'm surprised we didn't see you... just kidding. The 24 hours of light really interrupted my sleep so we covered the inside of our windows with aluminum foil (using blue painter's tape).
Haha, we totally could have crossed paths! Too funny. Isn't it a trip of a lifetime? So beautiful. And yes... totally with you on the sleeping. That's a good idea!!
This was a great video of Alaska. Alaska is beautiful. Thank you for showing this video. I would love to go there. My moms friend loved the Alaskan tours yours ago. She and her husband hand a lot of fun. Was it really cold when you went there? How was the weather most of the time you were there? Did you any bear? Can’t wait until next video comes out. Looking forward to it. Have a great weekend and see you soon. Stay safe and travel safe.
Hi Sherri! Yes, Alaska is beautiful. It was actually quite warm when we went, one of their hottest summers on record. It was in the 90s a few days. We saw a lot of bears! 😬 Thanks for watching! -Katelyn
What a beautiful trip in Alaska By the way your other couple friend in a motorhome they are already back in Mexico They're lucky to enter Mexico just in time because i believe the border in Texas especially in El Paso, Tex was close do to Coronavirus Don't know about the rest of the border Hope when you're ready to go back to Mexico the Virus is gone for good
Thank you Ricardo! Alaska is incredible! Yes, they are back already. I think there's a lot of misinformation and confusion going on at the border, but luckily since we have our temporary residency now we'll be able to cross with no issues! ❤ We can't wait to return! -Katelyn

Always coming through with the best, most though provoking comments, Cash! 😀 We loved pulling the footage out of the vault for this one. Definitely can't wait to share more soon! Hopefull next week. 😉 As far as Chernobyl... all great guesses! I've learned over the years that when Howard gets an idea, he makes it happen. He proclaimed "I think we should visit!" after finding a tour company and three months later, we were there! Can't wait to share about that trip, we we're vlogging then either but we have incredible videos and pictures.
Thanks so much Chuck! Haha, that is unexpected and sadly I have no idea! We hired a planner and they took care of creating the bouquet. I gave them very slight guidance. It was beautiful though!
Any tips or recommendations on "pulling an rv trailer"? I have a 22' R-pod and a capable truck...I have been trying to fine "trailer specific" accounts of the trip... In short, did you see/experience any smaller trailers being pulled up the Alcan? Ty and beautiful trip y'all had!
The only issue we had was coming back from Alaska, going through Canada. It was snowing (on August 18!) and a tractor trailer passed us going the other way, kicking up gravel and we got a crack in our windshield. That could've happened anywhere though! No other problems though. 😊 thanks! The pups loved Alaska!
Great video! What do you do with the pups when you're in restaurants, on some of the guided hikes, or enjoying hot springs? Do you leave them in the RV? And, for how long?
Martha, thanks so much for watching, and glad you found us! The pups do stay in the RV if we're exploring or doing an activity they can't join. We have an episode all about how we RV with dogs, be sure to check it out! ua-cam.com/video/B6s0Zn3wi1I/v-deo.html Hope you'll continue on the journey with us! 👍 -Howard
Yea Bears are a real thing It helps if you can identify bear scat. For instance: Black bear scat is kinda runny and smells like blueberries. Grizzly scat has bells in it and smells like pepper spray. ;)
Cool, great tips! It was nice to have a concise list. I’m going to add it to my saved videos to review when I finally plan a trip there (summer 2022?) Maybe drive up through Canada and take the ferry back. Did you make a reservation for Denali? If so, how far in advance? Any issues with the pups and bugs or other critters? Thanks! 🏔
Tara, I hope you'll love it as much as we did! We'll have more Alaska videos, lots more to share! We have talked about possibly doing a similar route for our next trip (drive up, ferry back). Some beautiful places are only accessible from the ferries, so its a solid idea! Denali we did make a reservation, about a month out if I recall. It was full every night we were there. If you strike out, there are campgrounds right outside the park. We'll definitely touch on the camping in the park in a future video. And thankfully nothing to report with the dogs, though we had bears in at least two of our campgrounds. Definitely good to keep them on a leash! 👍 -Howard
Larry, thanks for watching, and it's a GREAT question. We'll probably dive more into this in a later video, but the rules vary between Alaska, BC and the Yukon. All of them have formal private and public campgrounds (Yukon provincial parks even provide unlimited firewood, you just need an axe to split it!), but Alaska has an incredible amount of public lands for camping. BC didn't allow camping along right of ways, Yukon was generally open. 👍 -Howard
I went to Alaska by RV via the Alcan in 2006. Traveling through Canada via RV is like hitting your fingers with a hammer. You can do it, but t why would you want to do it?
Hi Michael, we've discussed this on other episodes, but in summary: we are working in Alaska (any WORK based in Alaska is "essential," there is a lot of confusion out there about whether certain jobs qualify, etc) for the summer. The Canadian border agency website has more info on valid reasons to receive permission to cross. Thanks for watching! travel.gc.ca/travel-covid/travel-restrictions/border
@@ReviewsByMichael Of course that's your right to disagree, but those are the policies as established by the Canadian government and border agency, not us. Even different agents we encountered at the border didn't agree with their own policies. -Howard
Raymon, it depends on HOW you travel to Alaska. If you drive through Canada, then yes you would need a passport. However, if you fly in directly to Alaska from the lower 48, or you take the ferry system, no passport is needed since you're traveling from state to state! Thanks for watching. 👍 - Howard

We have an episode all about how we RV with dogs, be sure to check it out! ua-cam.com/video/B6s0Zn3wi1I/v-deo.html
Hope you'll continue on the journey with us! 👍 -Howard
Yea Bears are a real thing It helps if you can identify bear scat. For instance:
Black bear scat is kinda runny and smells like blueberries.
Grizzly scat has bells in it and smells like pepper spray. ;)
Thanks for the tip, Jeanne! 😂 -Howard
@@NewstateNomads That's a Joke ;)
@@jeanne-gord7685 yes, and a funny one at that! 😂
Where (exact) did you stay in Valdez
👍 -Howard

Was camping as easy in BC as in Alaska?
I am curious, what made your travel to Alaska essential?
Hi Michael, we've discussed this on other episodes, but in summary: we are working in Alaska (any WORK based in Alaska is "essential," there is a lot of confusion out there about whether certain jobs qualify, etc) for the summer. The Canadian border agency website has more info on valid reasons to receive permission to cross. Thanks for watching! travel.gc.ca/travel-covid/travel-restrictions/border
@@NewstateNomads it’s great that you got across but I have to disagree that any work is considered essential.
@@ReviewsByMichael Of course that's your right to disagree, but those are the policies as established by the Canadian government and border agency, not us. Even different agents we encountered at the border didn't agree with their own policies. -Howard
Did you need your passport?
Raymon, it depends on HOW you travel to Alaska. If you drive through Canada, then yes you would need a passport. However, if you fly in directly to Alaska from the lower 48, or you take the ferry system, no passport is needed since you're traveling from state to state! Thanks for watching. 👍 - Howard
@@NewstateNomads thank you so much. Respect
Did you pull your toad in Alaska?
Hey Dale, yes we did. On our first trip in 2019 we were towing with a dolly and on our return trip in '21 we were flat towing a different vehicle.
Funny and sad that your next trip you had to rush through the 2100 miles in 3 days. Makes 7 days seem leisurely.
Why would anyonw think a trashy looking sign stack “cool?”
