    Ant-Man: Scott spends 5 years in prison because he puts the needs of others above himself.
    Captain America Civil War: Scott goes to super villain prison because he sides with Captain America when it comes to the idea of hero registration.
    Ant-Man and the Wasp: Scott is under house arrest because of his actions in the previous movie and risks further prison time for people he doesn't really know.
    Endgame: Scott is the catalyst to saving literally half the universe.
    Quantumania: Scott just doesn't care about others.
    One of these things is not like the others.

    What bothers me most about the Mandolorian atm is how can he get by in a Naboo star fighter? Before he had a gunship which served as not just transport but his literal home. 40:25 Mando was kind of a ruthless badass in about the first 2 minutes of the first episode, which gave me hopes the show would actually delve into the darker and more grey areas of storytelling. Right after he became the good guy caring about the baby and nothing else.

      And as for the Baby Yoda thing, there is so much you can do with that character. In that he is a child, but he is gifted. That scene where he stops a beast with the force should have been a big deal for the characters. If we'd got more time, that would have been one of the points why Mando refuses to turn him in and collect his bounty because from Grogu's perspective Mando has done nothing but protect him. And Grogu protecting Mando should have had more weight than just "that is so cool". No. Its nit even. Because they pull that out their ass.
      There's shows from Japan like Spy Family and Ergo Proxy that feature child characters. But it is not there just to be "cute". In Ergo Proxy, the child is an android clone of a Mayor who lost his young daughter. That android can do a lot of things with machines, but she's fascinated by people eating, and is curious about when people are sad, angry, anxious. She doesn't understand it. But she learns SOMETHING and even though she doesn't do much for the plot, she's interesting to watch. Because she forces a monster man and a cold, crude, stoic police detective woman to be parents. The dynamics are layered and interesting.

      After reading the Thrawn Trilogy it became incredibly easy to divide canon. There was Star Wars and then there was Disney Star Wars. There was what the original creator said was canon and what was more importantly very good and then there was what Disney said was canon that destroys the entire universe and demolished every once beloved character in a myriad of ways. Of course I'll take the video games I loved, the actually well written stories, the Clone Wars micro-series etcetera etcetera over Disney's dumpster fire.

    • @valentinegonsalves7322
      @valentinegonsalves7322 Рік тому +4

      Because they are made by people that give a damn about the story and universe. And so they lose more than just money if they mess up.
      As for the Thrawn trilogy, I haven't read it, but it sounds like it started with an idea and wasn't all "make it up as we go along." There are stakes.
      Mandolorian is just content for content's sake. Because Disney+ needs content. And yes Disney is losing money, but its not like they care. Because there's ten other Star Wars shows coming.
      Everytime I watch anything about Mandolorian I think of Tarantino. Tarantino movies are less about plot and more about characters. His last movie was about a real life tragedy but that was only on thread, the central focus was two friends who deal with their fading star in entirely opposite ways and are yet best friends.
      Mando is light on plot, but you could make up for that with good characterization. Imagine Tarantino directing a show about a gunslinger in space.

    I am at the 1:21:09 mark when writing this. Had to stop the video because I am getting heated by the statement "if something happens past episode 4" with Andor. In the first few minutes of episode 1 we get a scene where the titled character gets in scufle with law enforcement that results that goes very wrong for everyone involved. That scene has very good action in it that does well in conveying character for those involved. Look, I understand if the first few episodes ain't your cup tea, but to say nothing happens in the first 4 episodes of Andor is BS. I am tired of hearing "nothing happened" when Andor is mentioned when it did so well to show that multiple things were happening. Its statements like this prove the creators that things like Mando, Kenobi and Book of Boba Fett will do better because the greater audience doesn't pay attention to quality.

  • @dragonknightleader1
    @dragonknightleader1 Рік тому +55

    Okay, I have to comment on all that Mandalorian Darksaber business because it's a great deal dumber than the panel realizes.
    All the way back in Filoni Clone Wars, Mandalore was ruled by the Duchess Satine, who was like Padme on steroids and even dumber. The holder of the Darksaber was Pre-Vizila and his lieutenant, Bo-Katan, were leaders of a terrorist organization that kept trying to overthrow Satine. Also note that Bo-Katan is her sister, which makes her an even bigger jerk. Also, just because he had the Darksaber didn't mean he was the rightful ruler of Mandalore; that was the Duchess even though she was an incompetent pacifist. After many attempts to overthrow her, Pre-Vizila teamed up with Darth Maul's criminal syndicate to give Mandalore a Summer of Love Peaceful Protest so that everyone lost faith in Satine. After she was deposed, Maul challenged Pre-Vizila to a duel to be the rightful ruler. Maul won and Bo-Katan refused to accept her own dumb civilization's rules and ran away for twenty years.
    So, first of all, the Darksaber as a token of authority was a retcon from Filoni Wars. Pre-Vizila never used to say that he was the rightful ruler. Second, the Darksaber itself wasn't heavy in Clone Wars either; Pre-Vizila used it one-handed, meaning Mando is a pussy who doesn't lift, bro. Third, Mando's weird religion is like the Amish of Mandalorians because Death Watch were perfectly fine taking off their helmets and they were more influential to the state of Mandalorian affairs than Mando's has ever been. Mando's armor smith might as well be a larper making up rules as she goes along seeing as how her group is just three people.

    • @matthewcollins4773
      @matthewcollins4773 Рік тому +23

      It's weird how Bo-Katan keeps being presented as almost, if not fully, a righteous figure, when not only was she part of a brutal terrorist organization of extremist nationalists, but unlike Vizsla she didn't even have the single saving grace of not being a hypocrite. Vizsla accepted his death, all but gave Maul his blessing in those final moments -- yes, you're the strongest, you beat me, you are in charge. Granted, I get that accepting an insane Sith as your leader is a tall prospect even for Death Watch Mando-Nazis, so Bo-Katan refusing to accept it is understandable, but it still means she's a hypocrite and, arguably, a traitor to her faction. So she's a traitor to Mandalore and to the Death Watch.

    I do not agree with Disperu when it comes to TV being better than movies. While I agree with his point, it speaks a lot about your talent when you can get a point across in a short amount of time.
    As a big fan of short stories like Conan and the Shadow, if you can convey the point you are trying to make in a short amount of time, it demonstrates an understanding of what you are doing. Hell, the Critical Drinker himself proves this point to a T as a lot of his videos are 10 minutes long and he still manages to hit every single point of his criticism near flawlessly.
    What I think the problem is with contemporary media is self-indulgence. The reason why you are seeing a lot of flops with three hour movies is a lot of people don’t want to sit through a boring, slow-paced, uninformed lecture made by a rambling wannabe vlogger who has been given too much money.
    And if I wanted to hear a long rambling conversation that ultimately goes nowhere, I can tune to that for free on YT.

      Plus, I do think he's on to something when he mentioned that the quality of TV dropped when the budgets got bigger. One thing I've noticed across movies, TV and video games is the more money people have, the less creative they get because feature creep tends to come in.

One could argue it is the best action because it is blended with the tension and terror of an unseen threat in an environment similar to a nightmare where you can't run. The beginning hook of John Wick 1 is mostly female centric emotional pandering that holds up a rather blank stoic male protector who happens to be very capable in that role. This is at a time when toys on store shelves, prior to releases, spoil stories and character reveals. Lucasfilm, on all levels, is miserably mismanaged.✌🏽

    on the Bo Katan comment, this was covered in the Clone Wars series. It was not that they were progressive, they were trying to get away from isolationist policies which almost caused them to all die off. The group Death Watch was a faction that wanted to go back to the old warrior ways which included isolationism etc.
    The group Mando belonged/belongs to is Death Watch.

    Disparu: when you mentioned Buffy in your TV series vs movies epic expostulation, it reminded me of what Sarah Michelle Gellar said when, following the end of the TV show, she was asked about the possibility of doing a movie sequel. She said then that it took a whole twenty-plus episodes to tell a Buffy story; how could they do the same thing in 2 hours? TV shows like Buffy almost pioneered the series-long arc for character development; other shows had had long running character sub-plots, but it was with Buffy and its assorted contemporaries that the format was refined to the extent that became the norm. The action in Buffy was always good (from Season Three onwards, anyway) but as somebody said at the time, nobody was watching Buffy every single week because of the action. What Joss Whedon did so successfully was to integrate the action into the plot--Buffy was a vampire slayer, so even when she wasn't actively out slaying that still coloured every single element of her life. Stan Lee did the same thing with the Marvel characters: he made each one's power integral to how and why he fought, unlike most of the DC characters where the heroes could have been anyone under their masks (Tony Stark literally was Iron Man because of his heart condition; Bruce Banner was the Hulk because he had been exposed to gamma rays (from a bomb he himself had built - and as a result of saving someone's life), the Fantastic Four got their powers testing Reed's rocket which Ben was piloting and that was what made him into the Thing - there was a direct line of causality between who the person was before they got their powers and what they did after they got them). Long form storytelling is always more immersive, even if it often lacks the immediacy of the shorter form. I love TV shows and movies, but I can watch a TV show over and over in a way I can't a movie. And for the record, I'm probably three times your age and have seen more shows and movies than you can imagine. But don't worry - at the rate you're going, you'll catch up.
    Edit: Just heard what you had to say about SHIELD on TV. Totally agree, although I don't hate Winter Soldier. SHIELD is one of my favourite TV shows because it does all the things that Buffy did and that my other favourites do: gives you an ensemble cast with a strong family feel.

      I mean I agree, but there is a difference between liking something and rating its quality. For example, I'm a huge Dragon Ball fan, but I can tell you right now that Dragon Ball is not well written. The world building is almost non-existent, the fight scenes can often be repetitive and boring, the characters rarely undergo any kind of meaningful development, and so on. Dragon Ball is not good. But I still like it. I won't criticize anyone for liking bad media or disliking good media, but that doesn't mean that quality doesn't exist.

    • @ascendingarscente
      @ascendingarscente Рік тому +1

      @@HSuper_Lee I personally would argue Dragon Ball from the original series to the Cell Saga was good. Everything afterwards have been either hits or misses. Frustrated how Goku has gotten progressively dumber and keeps stealing Vegeta’s moments (minus Super Hero and Ultra Ego).

    • @HSuper_Lee
      @HSuper_Lee Рік тому

      @@ascendingarscente That's definitely something we could have a deeper discussion about. There's definitely good in Dragon Ball. I personally adore the Namek Saga and think that was as good as Dragon Ball has or will ever be. I also wouldn't say that quality is an easy thing to evaluate; it requires careful examination, patience, and often lengthy discussion to establish something's quality. Even after all that, not everyone is going to agree exactly with where a piece of media falls in terms of quality. I just think that saying that quality doesn't exist because people don't come to an exact agreement is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. We should all be able to agree that Shakespeare's plays are better than the Teletubbies or that Lord of the Rings is better than Lord of the Flies. The fact we might not be able to agree on which is better between, say, Hamlet and Fellowship of the Ring doesn't cancel that there are certain judgements we can make. That's really the point I'm trying to make. Dragon Ball was just an example of something I can say isn't super high quality but I still enjoy. I chose that as an example so that I'd be criticizing something I like rather than something somewhat else likes, it makes the discussion easier if I'm "insulting myself" rather than if I was criticizing something another commenter loves.

    ant man 3 shoulda been a Scooby Doo type movie where Scott and the Lang Gang (Luis, etc. & Cassie/Janet/Hank with Cassie only making meaningful cameos) solve a seemingly low level mystery instead of a heist now since they're good guys that ultimately led to the discovery and reveal of The Conqueror as a villainous force arc throughout 3 Marvel movies. They coulda introduced him in ant-man 3, multiverse of madness coulda been released after antman 3 to show the force that the conqueror is as the main villain of that movie where he doesn't lose, then they coulda had him be defeated in the Fantastic Four movie to show that F4 is one of the top tier heroes and there would finally be a leader for the Avengers that we've been sorely missing and also so that audiences can have a little more time with Marvel's first family before the next 2 avengers movies. Then it could be revealed at the end of F4 that the Dynasty of Kang's is actually the big antagonistic force for the upcoming Avengers movies (released after a few more solo MCU movies/shows) after they see the potential threat that these groups of heroes can be to them if they all came together like the Dynasty of Kang's

    The reason there is so much focus traditionally on male coming-of-age, male adventure, etc., is because of social outlooks stemming from reproductive bottleneck issues. That is, while females are seen as having inherent biological value by virtue of their womb, males have to earn or prove value through actions, character, etc. (As an aside, in terms of labour and economics, it's the opposite. Males traditionally labour for the family line, females will leave for another, and are a drain financially rather than a bonus, so males are seen traditionally as financially more valuable). Culturally we can (and in my mind definitely should) address the consequences of viewing things on reproductive instinct -- for one thing, simply in practical terms, pair bonding systems that value all males and celebrate male cooperation are far more stable than tournament models that only value "competitive" (that is, female-pleasing dominant) males. (Equally, societies that see females as contributors in multiple ways rather than *just* reproductive are more successful). Still, the idea that boys "become" men by trial rather than just by maturing is rooted in our evolution and biology, and will always colour people's reactions.
    The thing is, the supposed change in values of modern progressivism is never change at all. It's always reactionary, always about reinforcing the old, just in bizarre, self-contradictory ways. The entertainment powers-that-be double down on "females have inherent worth and don't have to earn it" while playing them in male roles -- which is why the female hero isn't proving her worth or growing as a character but just learning how great she was all along. It's females in male heroic roles but still defined classically with female qualities antithetical to the *point* of the role; and also, still perceived as defined by reproductive potential even as settling down and actually having children is condemned now as repressive. And because they're casting females in the hero roles without actually changing or updating how they feel about sex, it means that males aren't needed to fill those roles and thus, all males become the "uncompetitive" ones, so all males are treated the way in which "lesser" males were anyway -- as unworthy, mocked and dismissed. This is why "girl boss" and "girl who's the key to everything" go hand-in-hand with mockery and humiliation of male characters, even when it might seem there's no reason that it should. It's all tournament model sexuality, only warped to the point that even the positives of that system are removed, and all that's left is dysfunction.

    Kotor 2 had Canderous Ordo take on the mantle of Mandalor. In that role (defacto supreme leader of the clans) he embodies the persona, and like Din Djarin, he speaks through a helmet and doesn't take it off. However his lines are still passionate, emotive and compelling. In fact you'd need to emphasize your intent through voice due to no facial expressions, ie be more expressive. Also, the must "never remove helmet in public ever" was never, ever, ever a cannonical Mandalorian custom. Perhaps in training, rookies might have had a version of that custom (probably still only while in training or combat, makes no sense in casual settings). The only reasons Canderous did that was part Mandalor custom (little c) and part because he'd had made a particular reputation as a mercenary and he didn't want the two identities to overlap or influence people's preconception of the man. Basically, he wanted to make a new Legend of Mandalor, not the continuation of the Legend of Canderous Ordo, sacrificing his own identity to pursue the interest of the Mandalorian people as opposed to being an individual. Djarin has some parallels, and I was hoping season 3 was going to be that story of pursuing the interests of his people, reunification effort, instead of yet another spirit quest to find himself and "regain" honor. Again.

    Disparu has a point around he 56 minute mark. And I sometimes think it is underappreciated about recent reference to shit. What have you watched recently that makes you think this is good? Because recent reference, and hell expectations can seriously skew a viewing of something. Go into something with low enough expectations and you'll think 35 minutes of a dog having explosive shits would be a good time.
    As far as Mando Season 3, at least episode 1 goes, it is fine, in so far as it didn't do anything out of left field, anything insane, didn't do anything to offend, it was just there with some fan service and 30-something minutes of being able to turn your brain off, and unfortunately for some, and probably fortunately for a lot, that is all a likely majority of the consumers care about. In short it was entertaining enough for the majority of the consumers and in a month it will be forgotten by them.
