  • In todays video I finish up the little drain line before the rains come, I used the RK 24 once again with loader and backhoe to finish digging the line and the loader to backfill. Melissa came down to help get it wrapped up.

Nice job and love the hand clap at the end ! We put in curtain/french drains with ditch witches. The ones we use cut a 10'' wide path and are super fast. Dig them 40'' deep or so, 6'' of rock on the bottom then a sock covered pipe like you used, holes on bottom, then fill the rest with the rock. Grass eventually grows over enough on top so you're not shooting rocks with the mower. And they drain water like crazy.

You guys work well together, Melissa can read your mind, excellent quality! Seed is pretty cheap throw it on if it takes it will cover if it doesn't you are not out too much, larger non compaction rye's, oats and wheat's usually turn an area green within a week. It's good for stabilization if nothing else.

Really enjoy the content. Got a 120 acre parcel in Mid Michigan and as a CPA who doesn't know crap about tractors and doing projects like this, really find this insightful and inspirational. In the market for a tractor and sold on the RK (never heard of it until your video). Downside is there are no RK dealers in Michigan. Closest is 4 hours south of me in mid Ohio. Lots of Mahindra and Kubota up here. Hopefully we get an RK dealer in the next few months when I pull the trigger. Think you've talked me into an RK37 for what we do possibly a 55 only because I have a long road/lane to maintain that goes back deep into the property. Thanks for the content and sharing.

    Mike,
I do this every week in my landscape business, I first consider the square footage of the roof that the downspout responsible for draining off. I usually rely solely on the grade of the slope to allow water to find its lowest level.First and foremost get the water away from the foundation. Only you know where the water will end up. Hopefully not in an area where water just sits and pools. Looks like you got hard clay soil there. Perhaps lay the drainpipe right in the swale, and top dress, or fill in with good soil to bring that to a positive grade. Keep the end always visible. I say, the endpipe must see the light of day...that open end. The opposite meaning of that is that it's plugged. I usually use schedule 40, heavy wall pvc. Sometimes I just use schedule 30 if the run is short, and I can catch a positive slope. Let the grade do the work of ridding the water away. And on sandy soils it helps a lot. I know you got a good handle on it.

Just a suggestion, at the bottom of the downspout add a T-Y, and a cap that can be used as a clean out, and use only 45's no 90 degree fittings, or at least a lazy 90. You get better flow and a less chance of sticks and what not clogging the drain pipe at the bends.

Regarding your "laborer", she is very much like mine. My wife works hard on our property to the point that I have to tell her to just stop and relax for a bit. The heat and humidity here in North Florida can be brutal at times. We consume lots of water and Gatorade throughout the day as well as snack on cold fruit to help keep ourselves hydrated and our energy up.
Stay safe and keep up the great work!

Even if you regrade the swale, I think long term you will be happier with a French Drain. Dewatering deeper down wouldn't hurt to dry out the soil faster, particularly with a basement so close. Hopefully avoiding issues during especially wet seasons.

    Hey,
Thanks for your videos. I happened to be in the market to rent a tractor for a couple projects. Considering the pain of a short term borrow and getting it back on time.... I was in RK one day and saw this little guy with the back hoe and thought sweet little set up. After looking at cost of renting and as projects go they aren't always on time. I wondered with great relish...what about that little guy at RK. Did my research including your channel and brought mine home with the ag tires and back hoe. I am a 100 hrs in and what a bomb of a machine. My dad had a Mahindra 4500 for over 16 years so I am not scared of a non-green/orange/red(Case/MF) tractor. I did my home work and feel very confident in my choice but thanks for your input to help that choice. Will a machine ever have a problem...of course!! But I am very secure in the idea this little pony will be reliable for a long time short of an odd thing. I will be the first to shout out at the first sign this isn't a great deal. I have less than 20k invested and for the other colors the cost would easy be 30k and up for all that I have in the little guy. I am a maintenance anal guy so unless I break it with misuse/accident... I think this will be a good buddy saving my back for years to come. Happy new year and thanks again for a very concise and honest review. Your integrity is awesome(I make my living reading people) so keep that intact and everything else will fall into place ...not telling you anything you didn't already know... more for the readers(and haters). Be Blessed
