Yes I always appreciate Gary's reading style. It seems to me that this lesson is fundamentally the same as Descartes' insight which he summarized in the famous phrase, "Cogito ergo sum" ("I think, therefore I am"). It also reminds me of George Burnell's "Axioms". I wonder if someone could cite a few passages from S & H which back up the line of argument made here?
