  • Trade is one of the most important mechanics in game and yet it is poorly understood by newer players. Here is my attempt to simplify it and present it in a way that makes sense in gameplay.

    • @Wereldburger01
      @Wereldburger01 4 роки тому +3

      Haha, don't worry I guess it has nothing to do with your intelligence. EU4 is not so complex, there are in the game a lot of simple abstracted nonsence game elements (as trade goods by example) keeping the game overall mechanism vague. The basics about the EU4 trade mechanism are in fact very simple... there is no trade in the EU4 game world. Having trade goods in EU4 looks nice but are in fact nonsence because the marked prices of the individual trade goods are in all trade centers the same and fixed. There is no market price mechanism based on supply and demand, the developers have scrapped that already long ago out the game because the EU4 game engine can't handle such mechanism realistic enough. What is left is that all trade goods in the trade centers are directly abstracted into money, being taken there to fill the nation treasures directly or being tele transported to other trade centers towards your home trade center. Why to teletransport the money made oversea to your home trade center instead of take it already in the oversea trade centers where your merchants are?

    The greatest advice to someone trying to understand trade is to do 1 thing - hover your cursor over the income/ducats indicator in the top left. See how much money you are making via trade in the pop up? Great! Now, whenever you change anything with trade, give it a month, then check that little number again.
    Learning trade really comes down to trial and error if you don't want to explode your head with tables and calculating values and aaaaaaagh *head explodes*. You can learn trade goods, effect of merchants, collecting, directing, light ships, etc. but it all comes down to watching that number in the top left and seeing what you've done improves or reduces your trade income.

    • @filiptalimdzioski7281
      @filiptalimdzioski7281 5 років тому

      I always like trial and error method. I started the game raw and learned it up myself. Yes I was struggling bit but few numbers wouldn't hurt if you want to know a bit detailed so you can have even greater income. Great comment.

    • @WarLasso
      @WarLasso 4 роки тому

      Well... if only it were so simple. First of all, your income, and especifically your trade income, varies quite often, sometimes from month to month, depending on many factors; second, the longer is your "chain" of connected nodes, the higher the number of factors to consider, that, like I said, are constantly changing (your events, other nations' events, wars, decisions, static modifiers...). So you may change something (like building a marketplace, adding light ships to protect, moving a merchant, etc) but you won't necesarily see its effects immediately and directly reflected in your income overview. Besides, you need to keep in mind that the ui not always provides accurate info (the best example would be the "assign ships to protect trade" tooltip, which is totally wrong).
      You don't need to know every detail about how every calculation is made, but I wouldn't rely on simply tweak things and look at the income overview.

There are a lot of different things that can be mastered individually, but to put every single mechanic together and master the game is very hard

    One slight correction for 2:33. It is actually possible to change the trade good of one or more of your own provinces as a result of events, primarily the price change events which you can try to plan for, but also unique events for certain nations such as the Netherlands who will almost always find the province of Amsterdam changing production from cloth to paper in the 16th century. Finally there is also the decision to abolish slavery which will remove the slave trade good from your own provinces and replace it with another good that is appropriate for those provinces.
    All of this can be found on the Wiki.

    Have about 500 he's and your guides help clarify keys aspects of the game. I have a good feeling for the game imo, and play multiple mp online paradox games, Victoria 2, hoi4, eu4, a little ck2. But could you give a guide on how to micro wars? Such as when should I siege when should just take little provinces here and there, when should I just chase after the enemies army. When or should I mega blob an army. It would really help.
    I've noticed once you reach a certain point in paradox games you understand the macro and the meta but it's the micro that sets aside the knowledgeable players from the good.

    should i send all my light ships in one fleet protecting in the node where they generate the most value, or in small stacks like 5/5/5 or 5/5/10 in the top 3 nodes? the extra benefit of one single fleet would be an admiral.

    • @RadioRes
      @RadioRes  5 років тому +2

      Like I mentioned in the video, trade is a very dynamic mechanic in game. And it will really depend on how much trade power you have in your node + what other AI is doing in your node, upstream node and downstream nodes. Trial and error is the only way if you want to min-max trade income.

    Such a phenomenal topic and coverage. Let me humbly suggest one thing. If you were to speak about 50% the rate you do, it would be a HUGE help. For beginners (or even someone like me who has played a fair amount but found trade to be utterly byzantine), the concepts can be tricky. I found myself stopping a rewinding the video multiple times, which became a bit tedious. Also, speaking very, very rapidly when your accent could be tough to pick up for many of us creates a bit of an extra hurdle. I do not mean this to be anything other than a suggestion, as I was really pleased with the video overall and appreciate you doing this!!

    • @RadioRes

      There's no rule of thumb. Trade is too dynamic and depends on too many factors. Just send them to a node you have low trade power in and min max from there.

      Its really not that hard to understand, just try to have land in a trade node or light ships and then have a merchant steering or collecting. Thats really it. There are obviously a lot more variables than that, but just knowing those few mechanics will help you understand trade. Just mess around with it and you understand trade entirely after an hour or two.
