    Our Story:
    We are Carissa, Iwan & Frankie the sausage dog, and in 2020 decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month we were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call home. We picked up Albi, Joao and Simao the cats along the way, as well as Diogo the podengo and a flock of chickens.
    Subscribe to follow our project as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

    Hi Carissa and Iwan
    Are you aware that your balloon pump vessel(the red thing)also needs to be pressurised with air via the shraeder valve on the end of the vessel.this can be done with a car tyre pump and the pressure allowance will be on the data badge on the vessel.
    The air pressure is very important for the pump to pressurise the system
    If it will not hold pressure the balloon will need replacing.

    It looks like the harvest here in Southern France will also be early this year. We haven't measured the sugar content yet and are (perhaps foolishly?) waiting until the blistering heat is over (as forecast) a week from now. Once they are ripe, however, the boars move in and gobble them up, so there is a small window of time...

    There’s probably an optimal time for figs before pest get them. The rest looked fine. I’ve got Brown Turkey variety, which are hardy here in SE Scotland. I peel and poach some in red wine, which is delicious over Greek yogurt with some toasted almonds. Also made fig jam this year. And my fav is a marguerite pizza with sliced fresh figs and rocket on top with a drizzle of pomegranate molasses

    If you can get hold of it, a non return valve will help your priming problem. Even on a movable system it works, but don't position it on it's side, close to the top of the pipe going down to water works for me. Worth a try, will save loads of time. 👍❤

    Hi just a little tip for your pumping problems
    Your pump will not prime air, so you need to get the pump full of water.
    Also most common problems is the connections leaking air, could be either damaged seal, or just not tight enough, try wetting the seals first. Your petrol pump looks to be working well, just air screws it up. Sorry if I'm telling you how to suck eggs, but I spent 30 years playing with pumps at various incidents. Love your channel.

    Pumps don’t like sucking long distances. With those types of pumps you need to get them as close to the water line as possible. Even lower it down the well on a rope if the water table is low (just make sure you don’t spill oil!) Shortest possible suction pipe. Non return valves help as they don’t let the water run back. Also make sure there is no leaks on the suction side as it is easier to pull air in then water up. Make sure you have a good seal at the suction pipe to the pump connection. That is why the electric submersible pumps work well. 😮 Love your channel!

  • @jamiesmith1343
    @jamiesmith1343 5 місяців тому

    You might invest in a couple of hand pumps as they are self priming and use no electricity, just arm muscles. With all the wells on your property, it would be easier to move the water where you need it most.

    Well, interesting video with starlink type drones. Whatever. About FIGS- drying, preserving, dehydrating, and health benefits also. I unfortunately buy my dried figs and dates from a popular health store in my town in the U.K. when preserving your crop of dried figs I would keep too many for a whole year until you’re next crop. So, there is a UA-cam video on ‘How to preserve FIGS for yourself!’ They will keep for years. Short Term- figs can easily be frozen and used when needed to do a variety of dishes. Put these in packets (4 to 8 figs) per packet and label them before freezing. For me I love eating dried figs, but I would sun dry them either whole with the stalks on , or half or quarter them and put them onto drying shelves using parchment paper (shelves must be 12/15 inches apart) shelve size (Depth 12 X Width 30 inches). A 3 or 4 tiers high with a cover to keep off insects/mosquitoes/flies etc., using a mosquito gauze, and put them out into the hot sun. Rotate the shelves every 2 hours and turn the figs also throughout the day and bring your unit inside at night. Do this for 2/3 days until the have dried out to a reasonable moisture content. Face the unit east/west for full sun. The midday sun the top shelve will be the only shelve getting full sun, so rotate the shelves every 30 minutes. Before it rains, bring them in under cover. HEALTH TIPS- best time to eat dried figs is in the morning on an empty stomach if on a weight loss diet and for overall heart health. Figs are high in fibre and help to deal with stomach issues, especially constipation. Just find your eating protocol by starting to eat three to four a day or more, or eat enough to be system free daily. Dried figs contain more calories, sugar, dietary fibre, vitamins, and minerals than fresh figs. Fresh figs will have more vitamin C, A, and beta carotene. Hope this helps. Lots more you can do with figs. Enjoy.

I have no idea how UA-cam recommends videos like that but I’m getting an education whether I am better for it or not 😂

    There is a wasp or bee that does this with the figs but people still dry or cook figs and make deserts with them and figs sre good for you.

    that looks like a massive Starlink launch? - look it up! There are more than 4,500 mini Starlink satellites up there already and around those days there was a Chinese launch too.

    • @ruthconstantino6861
      @ruthconstantino6861 Рік тому

      Why do the satellites "dance" around the sky, going in one direction then curving up 180°-ish back towards the direction it came from... again and again and squiggle formations, too?

      @@ruthconstantino6861 Ruth, Starlink launches a bundle of small satellites at the same time, they are linked to each other, and they "unfurl" and spread out just like that, there's no big mystery - it must be on their website - I don't know whether youtube lets us post links in the replies, but you can google starlink and spaceX and you'll see!

    Lovely, lovely content, all of it. Projects not required but interesting when you choose to share. Adored everthing you included, especially reminders how difficult extreme heat, dryness, rain, firess, bureaucracy, etc can be woven together with your delights.
    Incredible and weird night sky capture, brilliant really.
    João and Sausage are so striking againt the stone and verdant background. Beautiful composition. Diogo the the streak of gold criscrossing your clips 😄.
    And thank you for including kitty kuddle, summer edition, with Albi leading the boys on how to embrace cool tiled floor.
    Albi: Sshhh... 💤
    Simeow: *thud*
    João: Like this, Albi??
    Appreciated your presentation of the cycling tour do Portugal.

    Absolutely love the night sky here and pump systems are always worth knowing about. If you ever need to cool off the pool is always here for you and air con - Luke has a great way of drying figs but always interested in knowing more. So much lovely fruit around at the moment and tomato and basil soup is a great call - think we may do a bit of that too. It is just great doing it with all of your own produce, which for the first year we have been here, we can manage too.

    The flask thing Iwan used with the grape juice is called a graduated cylinder. (It's called "graduated" because it has little marks on the side for measuring liquid amounts. Presumably one without the marks would just be a cylinder, but I've never seen one like that.)

    We had several evening launches in the US last week. Virgin did their first passenger shot to orbit and Spaces did a resupplying shot to the international space station. Could have been either of those.

      I read how the Virgin Atlantic launch would break from its forward path to curve upwards towards the heavens allow the propulsion tank(s) to separate from the glider, which had many a twinkling lights along it. It's flight path seemed a match to FOGgie's short of what they watched, but the Virgin launch was several days before their captures? 🤷🏻‍♀️
      If this wasn't what they filmed, then I vote they captured 👽👽👽 or sky sprites 😄. It'd be good to learn more about Serra d'Estrella or Gardunha paranormal reports that some viewers mentioned.

    See earlier comment. I believe you need a foot valve to ensure the pipe between the pump and the water remains full of water until you have suction. 😮

    In Brasil, do to the temperature the figs must be involved in little papers when its green and waiting to mature. And them you can have them when mature without any of this "things"...RS....
