Man, felt like you were speaking right to me about the gambling side of this hobby. As a 44 year old nerd, I am trying to help my 10 year old son appreciate the hobby from a "collect what you love" perspective. We watch and play sports together, and we have excellent memories of our favorite players and try to find cards that reflect those memories. I think it's working, but it's increasingly more difficult to keep him from getting crazy eyes at the wheel spins, coin flips, and whatever else is happening. Keep up the great work, and for what it's worth, I would love to shake your hand if I ever run into you at a show!

I was watching some videos of the National and felt kind of sad. When I was a kid, the whole point of going to card shows was to buy and collect your favorite players, build your PC and set build. Don't get me wrong, there was selling but not as it is now. The kids in the hobby are only in it for the money, and that sucks because they will never learn about the players just how much $$ they are worth.

I used to LOATHE people like mojo sports for most of my life but in actuality we need more people like him. He is super positive, extremely empathetic, and puts kids first. He reads fanmail often, replies to everything, sends player cards to requests, and gives packs in public when he can. Almost NO other creator actively does all these points. I think you misread his intentions, he is almost always genuinely happy to see people in the hobby. He was probably in the way and knows he is super corny but he is a people person and represents the better of qualities in the hobby other than pure profit.
Also about the gambling point, sports cards is inherently extreme gambling in itself (both hype breaking and individual pack opening), so having gambling platforms in the field, prize giveaways and carnival type of pay to play isnt anything new. It is ingrained in sports videogames as well (wheres statistically both kids and adults actively spend more time/money on), as the entire line of ea games/2k games has "gambling packs" and spintowin to improve teams, player performance, or win gear. US Congress have had several committees about online gambling and specifically online "pack openings" to no success. It comes down to discretion, parenting, and self control--

What people have to know about unemployment numbers is that there is so much nuance in it. It only records a person within the unemployment number if they are receiving unemployment Benefits.
Therefore, you are only recorded for a handful of weeks if you are receiving unemployment benefits. If you’ve not received benefits, or have been out of work so long that you are no longer eligible for them - you are no longer a recorded statistic within the unemployment number.

Regarding your current market condition of employment regarding hobby buying... I calculated my total spending over the psst 6 months on cards, I'm averaging about $300/month, and I would consider myself a "serious collector". During that time, I've only bought singles off eBay and IG... not one break, hobby/retail box or loose pack from anyone, like literally only singles. I have the specific players I target, do the research and carefully buy, always keeping in regards my level of hierarchy of importance. I think, "do I need this card more than a vacation, date with the cute girl, trip to see the fam, or night out with friends". Breaks have no impact on me, but I'm glad they exist for the simple fact that I can get the singles I want for fair market value. Thanks for the National coverage and consistent vids!

But they’re jobs! And they count in the unemployment numbers. There should be a « good job » employment number. Breaks…just as bad as boxes, just fractionally.

The big difference between legalized sports gambling and sports card gambling is regulation. The gambling is getting so out of hand in the hobby that regulation has to be coming before long. At least with legalized sports gambling we know the companies are legitimate and paying out what they are supposed to.
As for the job market, as someone who is constantly hiring let me tell you from experience it is not easy to find people to work, and it hasn't been since covid. I work in an industry that is actually in crisis because of the difficulties of hiring staff.

totally agree about the gambling... it's been a slow burn for the last thirty years though, with more and more ST thinking and get rich 'quicker' schemes... starting to go parabolic though in last 5 years.. haven't looked into any psycological or economical studies, maybe correlated to decreasing faith in the potential for long-term wealth accumulation (and by analogy, faith in the American experiment) and more and more people just hoping (gambling) on short-term gains, often rolling wins into another bet... certainly more true than ever in breaking and wax opening (given the prices charged today)... eventually you'd think the wheels falloff this train... but... hasn't happened yet...

I love all the young kids that are getting into the hobby but man they all are running around filming everything. I think the guys like MOJO and other attention seekers make a lot of collectors simply uncomfortable. Guys like MOJO do believe that they are more important then what is in the cases at these card shows.

Mike is a pretty respected figure in the grading space. He was one of the original graders for PSA back in the 90s. But regarding paying up for the Baker sticker, people do, and I think it’s just a matter of preference

All told we got out for under $500 each with 2 days admission at show but not including expenses at the tables. Book hotel early!

What I see is the influencers are trying too hard to be cool and are coming off as d bags. Then you got the kids or teens thinking they’re the man flipping cards but you wanna be the man at that age play the sports that you collect. Kids should be out there playing football baseball basketball etc.. then going to card shows every week.

And most high school grads go to college, because that's what they're told to do, and think they should find work related to their psychology or anthropology degree when they graduate, but end up back with their parents burdened with debt/loans. Blue collar (trade school) work is slowly making a comeback because even the brainwashed eventually figure it out. For most middling american youth, college is a waste of time.
