Scott, thank you so much for the informative seed catalog video. I appreciate your passion for sharing your knowledge with others. I am excited about ordering seed catalogs, learning more about the seed heritage and optimal growing conditions that will help produce abundant bounties of nutritious and delicious food. Have a wonderful day!
My sentiments exactly. I do like TERRITORIAL SEED CO. because of the different things I’ve been able to find. And I do enjoy the pictures in the catalogs to get an idea of the plant & description.
I'm trying Hillbilly tomatoe and We love and plant " Iroquois canolope" our favorite for 30 years strong , delicious try them. Thanks lots of good stuff
Yes, it is the most wonderful time of the year. I usually get the free Baker Creek catalog and am amazed by it, but the Whole Seed Catalog rises to another level.
I've purchased plants from both Wilson Brothers and Stark Brother's. Had success with both, so they are my go-to online nursery's. Also received great plants from New Life Nursery. All three pack their plants really well and everything I have ordered arrived in great condition. I also purchased some things from Annie's. I pretty much stick with companies that sent me great product. I do not even shop around for price now. As long as they send me quality plants I will pay what they ask. Sometimes you get what you pay for. You buy cheap and you get horrible plants. Stick to your growing zone and you usually do o.k. Most of my plants come back each year, and so I buy less each year and put more money into soil amendments and tools. Now I can afford to experiment with unusual or exotic plants. Food gardening is basic -- only plant what we will eat. But flower gardening let's you experiment -- which is fun. Food gardening in necessity; flower gardening is hobby fun. But all of it get's me outside, in the sun -- getting my vitamin D -- working the old muscles. Unless on a day like today -- raining. So, I am on the net watching gardening sites and occasionally making comments to pass the time. Great gardening to everyone and big thanks and appreciation to experienced gardeners like Gardener Scott for sharing their knowledge with hobby gardeners like me.
I had the same experience with the burgess like companies. Some how I ended up flooded with these catalogs even though I'd never heard of them. I noticed their addresses are either the same or next door to each other etc. I've had a few plants l from these companies that survived, but I wasn't impressed. I started going through SSE almost exclusively for a while and started getting from some other companies as well a couple years ago bc of the selection. I like the phrase you used for the seed catalogs, it so true! I love looking through catalogs during winter. Now I shop several catalogs every year taking the best from each. On a side note, one of the last conversations I had with my dad before he passed away was about where I order my seeds and SSE's mission. He died unexpectedly so if it seems weird that we were talking about seeds, thats why.
I know Baker Seeds catalog has a charge, but I found it at Costco this week for $6.88. Also, after the first time to order from them, they will send you a catalog the next year. Their catalog is an artists dream! I love their quality and their dedication to prevent the GMOs and big companies aka Bayer nee Monsanto from taking over our heirloom seeds.
Hi, Kiki. Baker Creek actually has two catalogs. Their basic catalog is free and can be ordered from their website any time. Their big catalog is for purchase and you got a good price. It has many more pictures and is very enjoyable to look through. They are a great company.
Just because a few companies have the same address does not necessarily mean the product is the same or from the same stock. It could also mean that they have all out-sourced to a mail processing company that takes printed forms and digitizes them or employs data entry clerks.
I like the family run business’s if possible. Even if the prices are a little higher. Also if I call in to ask a question, I want someone with some experience to answer my questions, not a machine or someone from another country. But that’s just me.
I like Johnny's, but their shipping charges are excessive. Last I checked shipping started at around $8 and then the next tier is $15 and keeps jumping up from there. I don't buy from them anymore because of that. I know how much USPS first class shipping costs for small packages as I do a lot of shipping myself and I know they aren;t even paying more than $1 for an envelope because they use so many. Labor is expensive but it's still excessive. Basically their shipping charge is about what FedEx would charge.
I I did have links to the catalogs in the description below the video. I have a newer video discussing my favorite catalogs with links too. ua-cam.com/video/EhgaHexo9Lw/v-deo.html
Garden porn. Lol. Totally agree. I've noticed some carry hot peppers including some extreme hot peppers while others only carry the sweet peppers. It's neat to see how each catalog carries different hot peppers that others don't have.
I like to order some different ride a tomato plant out of totally tomato and some out of the ordinary cucumber seed Maybe you know some things I just don't need a whole lot of. But for my beans my corn, okra, peas, and turnip greens I get it my local farmers co-op or we have a 3 other local AG Dealers. Like the rattlesnake beans I believe you said were $2 for a couple ounces I pay like $3 a pound. Wait cons about 13 to $15 a pound of pending on which kinds you get and good old Maltby field corn is only about $3.50 a pound. You can also buy Flats of tomatoes for $12 a flat that has 36 plants in them ready to set out but they don't always have the world's best selection. It'll be mostly Rutgers, Better Boy, celebrity, Roma, you get the idea just your run-of-the-mill kind of everyday tomatoes. But I like to get certain types of beefsteak tomatoes and I loved one that totally Tomatoes had called a big bite. I got them one year and they produced and made the best tomatoes and then the next year when I went to order them they said they had a total crop failure. I found a couple other packs online and ordered those and they didn't come up I think they were must have been from last year's crop and they charged me three times the cost of them also. Oh and I made a mistake I bought them 2 years in a row. but thanks for the info do you have a video on about using different things in your Tomatoes like Epsom salt and such other items that you might put on different plants to help them besides just fertilizer? just an idea I've heard Epsom salt would help but I used it one time on something but I don't remember what it was it's been 20 or 30 years ago I guess. Your friend in gardening, Jack
Looks like you've figured out how to garden and save some money in the process. I like to save seeds, so I'm willing to pay a little more for special plants or seeds and then save my own so I never have to buy again. I plan to do many more videos about growing tomatoes, to include Epsom salt and other additives. Some work and some don't. Thanks for your interest, Jack.
big box local store is best. If you have an issue they will take it all back no questions. Ive tried returning plants/seeds online and many places wont accept returns or will make you wait till next year for a replacement plant. I can take a plant back for an entire year at home depot and they give me the money back no matter the condition.
M happy new year mr Scott's how are you doing well I hope you are blessed I made a mistake with the name last time I was hear I will like to get some off the Cartlong please.
I have to grow everything in big pots, I find for just basic seeds the Dollar Store seed packets do just fine, @.25 per packet , but for the fancier stuff I order from www.rareseeds.com/, I just put my order in and spent $35 for a dozen packets of things that I really want to grow--my goal is to grow crops that I can freeze or dry and eat all year long. So I went through the catalog and picked out seeds and then went through it again and removed seeds that may sound exotic and interesting but I really have no place for in my limited garden. Baker Creek does ship for free and I am getting a couple of their free mystery seeds too (which I used last year, it was a pepper variety and a packet of carrots.)
Basic seeds are pretty much the same, regardless of the source, so shopping at the dollar store is a great idea. The video I'm releasing on Friday says to do exactly what you say... think about what will fit in your garden and remove the seeds that you really can't use. I'm not familiar with Bear Creek, but free shipping is always a good idea too. If you mean Baker Creek, they are one of my favorite companies to order from and their free shipping makes it even better. Thanks for the comment.
Would you be able to find open pollinated/heirloom seeds at the dollar store? Or only hybrids? I want to try to get in to seed saving and if I understand correctly this is a necessity to have open pollinated seeds
"Ordering Addresses" for the various SEPARATE companies may well be the same --- but --- contracted mail drop sub-companies are being used by those SEPARATE seed companies. Ever have to contact your doctor after hours? Do you think that the friendly voice on the phone is actually working in your doctor's office very late at night? Nope - Telephone answering service for ALL the doctors in town.
In this case, the similar addresses are exactly what Scott guessed, it is the same company using the same fulfillment warehouse. Burgess is the main company but thye have many different brands they market with. They are all the same seeds from the same fulfillment house. Your experience from one will be the same with all the others.
Seed catalogs used to be sent out after christmas. I wish they would go back to that. Its like easter stuff on the shelves before christmas is over....not happy and anymore i throw out catalogs till january first. Period. My way of protesting. And i am old fashioned...i want a catalog but whats with sending me a catalog every three weeks. Come on...save a tree. If everybody would let them...seed companys ..know maybe they would listen..think?????
As an older person with not so good eyesight, ( WAMD ) it’s much harder to view things on a computer than looking at a category. As I get older with more and more disability’s, I started to realize, we’re not all the same and we don’t all have the same abilities as when we were younger. If we’re reading and learning from then, how is that a waste? Like any book or magazine.
I love the bigger choice and sometimes just like to learn.
I just ordered from all of them except Baker's Creek because I already get their catalog.... Thank You Gardener Scott ☺️
Hamilton road is an East/West intersecting on the corner of the North/South Morrissey Drive. You are correct on it being one giant distributor.
“Gardening Porn” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 That was the best
Scott, thank you so much for the informative seed catalog video. I appreciate your passion for sharing your knowledge with others. Have a wonderful day!
I love baker creek seeds and their heirllom tomatoes. One of my favorite is the Paul Robeson.
Love the videos you make. I'm getting along in years, but this is my passion, growing things.

Where can I get the seeds
I love seed catalog season. Bakers Creek is the best! The free one or The Whole Seed catalog.
Yes, it is the most wonderful time of the year. I usually get the free Baker Creek catalog and am amazed by it, but the Whole Seed Catalog rises to another level.
Thank you for helping me order SEED CATALOGS...
U are very informative 👌
Best corn we love is Kandy Korn from the Gurneys Seed Co. Good folks!
late summer our local Ace hardware discounts their seeds, I got a lot of seeds for .25 per pack.
This was another great video. I’ve ordered my catelogs. Can’t wait for the spring. Thanks again.
You are very welcome.

Your catolge picture of the purple tomatoes , I have already bought from same Baker Creek Seeds has lots of eye candy for my eyes
Thanks
Usually get some of Catalogs you mention, several I had not requested before. Requests submitted to them.

Or maybe like a P.O BOX? But I wouldn't chance it. Too many good other companies.

I’m just trying to grow what I will actually eat.
I wish there were that many catalogues to choose from in Germany !
Wow that is a lot of catalogs !! I felt like I had a lot but really you put my collection to shame
Another wonderful video!!!!
Thank you.
Nice suggestion. Sir
Thanks.
Oh boy. I just placed an order from Burgess. I'll cross my fingers.
MIGardener.com no catalog but all the seeds are .99
Well not all the seeds. And they have very limited supply 😏
I love True Leaf. Great company and they also sell their seeds in bulk packs and carry all sorts of pots, pellets, seed trays nice light strips etc.
I completely agree!
I like Johnny's, but their shipping charges are excessive. Last I checked shipping started at around $8 and then the next tier is $15 and keeps jumping up from there. I agree. I focus on companies with cheap or free shipping.
Nice info, thx
I can't find the link for catalogs for seeds. I didn't see it in the comments, is it someplace else?
I I did have links to the catalogs in the description below the video. I have a newer video discussing my favorite catalogs with links too. ua-cam.com/video/EhgaHexo9Lw/v-deo.html
I’ve ordered from gurney and territorial seeds. I like territorial more.

Ps moosewood seed potatoes have always beren super productive...including their fingerlings.

I don't think these catalogs will ship to the Caribbean. You might find seed companies in you region that will ship them.

so wasteful, why order catalogues when it's all online.
Some of us still like the feel of paper and curling up with a good catalog.
Plus, they’re nice to look at. And if you want to make collages with the pictures, they’re beautiful
