Great breakdown. I will share this with pitchers to help put off runners at 1st

Absolutely. My son caught. Once a catcher can throw an accurate 2.0-2.1 pop IN GAME, runners don't steal unless they time the pitcher. It was frustrating being asked, "what's his 'caught stealing' %?" That's a meaningless (almost) stat. And there's no stat on % of runners that didn't even try. I loved pictures that could hold runners.

yeah, it's important to recognize just how much pitchers have to think about; it's hard for amateurs to do all these things at one, stay present, be 100% focused on their pitch, while also randomizing their holds and being just attentive enough to hold runners. The stuff in this video sounds really simple, and it is, but it's also pretty difficult to do inning after inning for young pitchers.

Yo. Over the last years, per some random website I just checked: *MLB* average pop is 1.98s, for a 30% CS rate. There is zero statistical difference between 1.98 and 2.00 pop. So, you're expecting way too much of little leaguers or any Coach-Dan-aged kids. MLB average is totally irrelevant to pre HS nevermind pre NCAA nevermind pre pro nevermind pre AAA or pre MLB. Cmon.
Congrats on your son but prolly dial back the expectations?
Respectfully, a random schmuck (but who once caught a perfect game and pitched a no hitter in big city championship level so roughly semipro softball, presently father of a LL all-star teen sometimes catcher at state champ level in northeast). Holding runners on is a huge step for kids. Throwing down, and behind them accurately is next... Just to age out of the tragicomic "eat it" years. 2s POP is a non goal surely.

just as an aside, runners are also vastly slower in amateur baseball, making it unnecessary to throw 2-flats to get runners out. 2.5s will be competitive when you have 7.6 60yd speed runners at first. it's on my list to do a handful of new expectations videos - showcases have made this a mess, allowing cheating on pop times for recruiting profiles, allowing 16 year olds, who have legitimately great arms, to throw 1.70s, when no MLB player can hardly match that.
