Thanks for this tour from way back and I again appreciate the subtitles. I am currently getting ready to put up The Open Day and trips to and from Crows Nest Metro on 26th May 2024.

A great pity that they didn't keep a decent number of "W" trams as a tourist attraction running in a circle style fashion through the CBD. I remember the distinctive "hum" of the "Z" class and the old pole type pantograph. Thank you for a great video, much enjoyed.😊

Well they did. 12 have been modified to become the W8 class. Amongst various bodywork improvements, their contactor controls were replaced with electronics and all of this cost a lot of money. Nevertheless Yarra chooses to run only a few around the City Circle in one direction only. I’m not sure why, but I suppose they just couldn’t be bothered running any more. Nevertheless the state government has let them do this.

@@dieseldavetrains8988 Not really. Sooner or later they will find some excuse to run them less and less. In the past whenever they were short of drivers for a profit-making service, taking a City Circle driver was often done. There are no bonus payment available for CC trips. I suppose they still do that.

Awesome video mate I remember the Preston Tram workshops depot with old Melbourne Trams with yellow and green stripes patterns. It’s gives me memories and great history before the new E classic trams take over 😊

Well all the buildings are still there. However largely it is just a tram depot with, I gather, minimal repair abilities.

I once visited the Hawthorn (training) depot and saw the W class chassis showing the motors and controller, the reverser handle was thrown to show the arc-ing in a motor with cover removed. The reverser handle trick was shown to our group in a W class as it travelled towards the wall at the back of the depot.
Apparently the depot was a site of a two pole short just outside the depot which killed two men working on the overhead wiring which had been turned off.

Around the 1980s when demonstrating that ‘4th Emergency’ braking method one of the motors on the W2 underframe suffered a short circuit and the blown motor was never replaced, so as far as I know running the tram motors cannot be done. I can’t say I ever heard about workmen being electrocuted, but of course it may well have happened.

13/11/87 was a Friday evening. My daytime visit was obviously a weekday. By North Fitzroy I presume you mean the bus workshops. I never went there so somebody else may have something taken there, but I don’t like your chances.

Yes I am well aware of that. I saw the last day of trams in 1969. You nearly got trams with Briztram but a major factor was influential shopkeepers getting it stopped on the grounds that they did not want to lose trade during construction.
